What issues to expect at 157k on the 3.4L?

Hey all!

I'm a looking for some answers and advice on buying a used 01 4runner. 157kmi.

My question is what are the issues to expect at 157k mileage on the 3.4L? Know they pretty solid and last.

I plan on doing all the work myself as I'm a mechanic and love to wrench. I have a 96 jeep 4.0 that is at 275k and still going lol

What should I expect to repair or look for to keep it healthy and to last me another 150k?

If you’re in an area where the roads get salted, check the frame thoroughly. If the radiator is original, replace it.

 

At 150k?
Timing Belt, water pump pulleys, crank seal, cam seals. Valve cover seals. Brake fluid change. Plugs, wires.

For the age?
New hoses, new radiator.

Not much else really.

 

At 250k I went and replaced the throttle body as the TPS \ Pedal position sensor (not sure which one) was causing lots of issues. Also she started floating on the highway and the rear control arm bushings were shot. Also replaced the LBJs and UBJs because of age.

Ok i definitely plan on doing the timing belt, water pump and all fluids. Plugs/wires and valve cover seals. If it hasn't been done. Most likely I'm going to say no on that. So I expect some repairs.

How is the valve covers and cam seals? Probably not too bad I'd imagine but just removing alot to get to the valve covers? How is the timing belt? Anything crazy?

Also yeah definitely going through the basic stuff with brakes and ball joints, common sensors and such.

Negusm- what were the issues you were with that bad TPS? I'd imagine idling and some throttle issues? Anything bad? Shifting issues?

 

None of it is crazy. It's very easy and a breeze if you're a mechanic.

Just use only TOYOTA or TOYOTA Supplier parts (Denso\Aisin\Mitsuboshi, etc).

Bad gas mileage.
Surging with the AC on.
Very Low idle.
Hesitation in the gas pedal from a stop.
Hesitation in the pedal.
IAC engine codes (even though 2001-2002 do not have an IAC)

I replaced the entire TB and she runs like new.

I use online TOYOTA dealers like Camelback or McGeorge for 30% off. So the entire TB unit was $650

 

In case you’re unaware, we mention the radiator because it’s at an age where it can fail, allowing coolant to mix with transmission fluid and ruining the transmission.

That thing's just breaking in

 

The original radiator on my ‘99 cracked at 170k miles. 2 original coil packs failed at 165k. Check closely all control arm bushings, steering rack bushings, ball joints, tie rods. It’s not unusual for a truck like that to still have original everything on it and still drive ok, but in reality it’s all worn out. It’s a pretty cheap and easy rebuild.
