Well, I expect to have an Off Road Premium in Lunar Rock, with Moonroof and all weather mats. Our plan is to set it up to travel cross country and take it off the beaten trail for some adventures. We will spend some time in the North Maine Woods as well. It will also be a daily driver, which is basically 20 miles typically. What do you think is needed?

    Saved for projects.

    Plans

full roof rack thinking Sherpa at the moment. Ordered 4-9-22 from Truck Brigade. Also picking up a set of awning brackets.

roof top tent-hard shell, something that can carry kayaks

suspension-wanted KDSS, but couldn’t get it. Will see what the weight is and only looking for a little lift, looking to improve road handling and increase off road abilities as possible.

    Winch/bumper- probably low profile.
    I like this look.

Depends on how off the beaten trail you want to go. Generally, I've found the stock 4R Off-Road to be fine for most dirt roads and the occasional rock staircase. Took it through Canyonlands on the west side of the river to camp on a ledge overlooking the Colorado. Have also taken it through Steele Pass in Death Valley - going North to South from Eureka Dunes to Saline Valley/Warm Springs. Only change I've made is to add K02 tires in the stock size. I may have touched down once or twice on the rocks in Steele Pass, so, an extra inch or so of clearance might have been nice, or full skid plates, but nothing damaged. Note, my stock JKU Rubicon went over Steele Pass multiple times and never touched a skid plate.

But, I'm not carrying any extra weight except the Sherpa rack on top. If I were carrying a giant RTT and winch bumper, would probably want heavier duty springs/shocks.

But then, once I start down that path, I'd want to swap UCA's, wider wheels and larger tires. 33" tires are sorta too inbetween, so, then I start thinking about 35's, and the mods start coming faster and more expensive. So, truck is stock.

Congratulations. Good looking truck. Winch bumper. Sliders. Full length roof rack. AT tires. Sounds like you plan to go way off the beaten path, which is excellent! Are you going solo? I mean, without a second vehicle?

Safety first. When traveling by car (and therefore less concerned with weight) I carry a nice fat first aid kit. Get some basic first aid training and build your kit yourself based on your personal knowledge. Other things: a fire extinguisher. A puncture repair kit and compressor. Cribbing for whatever jack you are using. Recovery gear. A SpotX or InReach or other 2-way satellite communicator. I have a Garmin GPSMap 66i with topo maps. It seems to have all the trails I’ve ever driven on it.

What do you plan to put up on that rack? A roof top tent? Water and fuel? Jack and shovel? Recovery boards? Awning or E-Z Up canopy? Second spare tire? Are we talking weekend warrior or full expedition mode?

    I feel your pain.

[Dare I say it? For folks who know they’ll want 35’s there are better choices than the 4Runner.]

Ha! I almost put at the end of that message that if I wanted 35's on the 4R, I'd probably start looking at alternate vehicles. Putting 33's on there seems like a lot of $$$ for not a huge amount of benefit. I found the same to be true of my old JK Rubicon. Going to 33's required a lot of mods, but the Jeep already had nearly 10" of clearance. The 4R with 33's would get me close to the clearance on a stock JK.

So, back to the point, which is, do what you like to your vehicle. I've left mine stock for now. Recovery gear, emergency kit and first aid kit are probably the best things to buy first.

I want to be able to operate solo, wilderness first aid in the 1900s, currently cpr cert through work.

I don’t plan to build a rock climber, but I don want to be scared I’ll screw something up trying to get through a tough section. I would rather be safe than sorry.

the wife already requested steps, so after I order the rack this weekend, I’ll start hunting sliders.

I am not 100 percent on what will end up on the roof, RTT is very likely and that will determine what else fits. I have a small awning that will go up for now, but that will probably end up on the rav.

You can literally fit 33s on the 4R with no mods. It's tight, but they go.

YES, only charge state fee for title, so basicly no Doc fee. They played hard ball on my trade, I think I should have gotten more, I almost walked away.

Do any caveats apply? Mind you, I’d be delighted if you were correct, but I’ve certainly read many attestations to the contrary and though there are dozens of threads on the topic a consensus remains elusive.

Always a caveat, but the oft quoted T4R.org tire fitter chart says 285/70 17 fit.

Great. Anyone who travels off the grid should have some first aid training.

Many years ago I took an off-road driving course (on the Rubicon). The instructor specified that the point of the course was not to pit one’s vehicle against the trail, but rather to learn how to get from point A to point B, and then back to A. Which means not breaking anything. Safe is good especially when operating solo.

Bought a Tacoma from them. Only dealer in the Northeast not charging a markup. The 4Runner gets North Woods duty though, great truck for the terrain. I have a stock truck except for Nitto Terra Grapplers. I air down to about 25 psi when in the woods and have never gotten stuck up there. Here are some pictures from my last trip in September.

So, the 33's are on stock, suspension travel? How are 33's off-road with no mods? The people I've been with that had 33's on a stock 4R said they figured out pretty quickly they needed more mods to make the tires work off-road. Maybe they're wrong. I dunno. I'm always willing to learn something new!

    I can't answer that. I never tried.

But there's a chart that lists fitment of popular sizes on stock suspension and it shows that smaller 33s fit without suspension mods... Only fender liner and mud flap mods.

I assume legit off road use would still see rubbing under most circumstances just due to flex.

Literally no mods. That sounds pretty definitive.
Perhaps you misspoke when you said “no mods.”

Yeah, you got me, I guess I did; though to be fair shoving a fender liner 1" forward or unbolting a mudflap is hardly the equivalent of adding a suspension lift. I wouldn't really rate those as mods, more like adjustments, but we can mince words all day I guess...

I think it all depends on what you want to do with the vehicle.

Drive on pavement, just like the look of bigger tires: 285's fit.

Drive off pavement, need more clearance: 285's are a waste of time and effort.

Again, my understanding comes from people I've driven offroad with that have shared their actual experiences, not armchair offroaders that have not tested a given solution.

Is that a joke?? If you were worried about $500 and them listing it for $999 more than they told you, sell it on your own. How would it make sense to bash them, after you tell us they are good, because they listed their car for more that what they told you lol. You realize they have to try and make a profit off of it as well right?

Well during the negotiations they used it as a selling point. I was lied to. I am telling it like it is. They said they couldn’t give me any more because it was going to be listed at 33k

Edit: to add to the story, I ended up less than what I was told my truck would get at auction. I could have sold it for more last Thursday, but thought I’d get something comparable in a trade offer, I was wrong.

    Lights?

I am thinking that I’d like to change out the rear hatch lights, to either red or green. The thinking is those colors won’t attract as many bugs, easier in the eyes and night vision. I may even change up the interior front light as well.

but, I’m not sure where to start with this project?
