Good idea. I’ll use a bungee cord .

when somebody asks whats it for, tell em it’s to help hold up the hatch

A simple way to address this is with pool noodles. You make a cut into them lengthwise and slip them over the metal braces on the inside of the garage door that will scratch your vehicle. Easy, cheap and no need for any solution installed in the vehicle.

That’s what I did. But used black foam pipe insulation which is essentially the same but already split down the middle.

I got lucky tested that out on a test drive to see how it fit with mower and snow blower etc and tried the hatch.

This year I needed some garage door maintenance and my service guy was able to adjust the door to go up and inch or two higher also which is nice.

That may be another option for some to see if your door can be adjusted to go up another inch or two

Great idea. A great solution as well and less cumbersome than installing something on the vehicle that’s going to get in the way in day to day use of the trunk.

That crossed my mind too, my only worry about that and the main reason I didn't do it, is it's still going to be rubbing something that's not meant to be touched on the outside of the car. I'm in Arizona, so the amount of dust/dirt/grime we get would end up scratching it in the long run.

I’ve used the pool noodle/pipe insulation foam method for 15 years on my 3rd Gen and almost 5 years with my 5th Gen. No paint damage or any scratches. Lift the hatch up slowly. The way my 4R is situated in the garage the foam contacts the hatch at the horizontal 4RUNNER badge.

Doesn’t work for me. The cabinets I have up front all block the hatch from opening.

I bought 2 packets of these and stick the 4 pads on to the garage door legs / supports (or what ever those are called) where the cargo door hits.
(Can't trust Mrs with the bungee cord or dog leash code. She is more likely to close the door it been trapped between the door and the edge . I even had to set the security system to trigger the alarm when garage door is not closed within 30 min.)

I did something similar, with paracord and a carabiner, but then I also have a bungee that attaches in the middle. When the hatch closes the bungee contracts and pulls the rope in so it doesn't get caught in the door. Has worked well for quite a while now.

Is the garage door tall too?

One of my friend has a tall garage where he has built storage area but the garage door is standard size.

So damn funny man. Had to do the same with my wifey. She's left the garage door open multiple times. I had to also get an opener for her key chain because she lost the other ones we had.

The next time I feel sad and lonely being a single guy I will think of the above comments. Everything is a tradeoff I suppose

One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 34 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 32yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
How tall is your garage door? Older ones seem to be 7’ and newer houses are usually 8’.
