BFG Trail Terrain T/A - anyone running these?

This is a fairly new tire. Not the same off-road chops as the KO2, but intended to be an improvement off-road over the stock Bridgestones/Dunlops while maintaining good manners for us 97% on-roaders. Is anyone running these? Thoughts?

 

Saw a set in the wild on a pickup last weekend. They look much better than street tires but not as aggressive as a KO2. Stock size SL are 39 lb with. 660 treadwear. Promise of good off-road behavior. They have my attention.

 

You can always have them mount the tires white letters in if you don't like that look. I have run ko2s on several vehicles and have never found them to be bad on the road at all.

Just got the trail terrains today. They are super quiet and smooth. Mine was 275/55/20

Small sizes. Looks like those are made for Subaru's and Rav 4s, Ridgeline, etc.

 

We ordered a set of the Trail Terrain T/A's for our GX. Should be arriving any day now. On paper, they seem like a great tire (3PMSF, XL load in 255/70/18 and weighs only 40 lbs). Time will tell!

 

Who the hell sees the inside of your tire? They don't have white walls they have white letters on one side which looks better on some color 4Runners.

I'll stick with my KO2s. They are quiet on road and kick ass off road.

Those look like Michelin all-season tires.

 

I've been waiting for these for over a year. Finally reached out to discount tire and they ordered some on layaway and just got them installed today on my '15 limited (20inch). A bit nervous because of the intense fan loyalty to the KO2 or AT3 and there is little info available about these. Can't wait to get them in the snow. I had to get a tripeak for my new tire, but I don't do any serious off-roading or rock crawling.

It previously had the OEM Bridgestone H/T D684, and I was actually impressed with its performance in snow, even worn down a bit. Looking forward to seeing the improvement with these.

The BFG Trail Terrains finally gained enough customer reviews on Tire Rack so now they're rated against all other AT tires. Only 350K+ miles of reviews so far, but they mostly seem positive. Tire rack also tested these tires and it received a good, not great review. There are a number of other reviews online, overall most are very favorable. I plan to have these installed next summer when I hit 5 years on my factory Dunlops.

 

Honestly I wish I could quit K02s. They are expensive and heavy. But after 38k miles on my 4Runner, they are 9/16ths, have driven through snow, Colorado trails 2 years in a row, towed, and even the worst environment, my neighborhood that's under construction. Pulled a screw out of the sidewall, didn't make it far enough in to cause a leak...that was 6 months ago, still fine.

I spoke to a friend who has been part of UA and works with some of the motortrend offroad people and he said the same thing. I don't think it's Broverlanders, it's rather annoying personally, cause I like to try new tires and see how they look and perform. However, I keep overpaying for Ko2s. I guess I should buy stock in them.

One note, use them up. They will dryrot faster than other brands. Brands that have great rubber compounds are tires like Mickey Thompsons.

What’s a broverlander and why is that a dig?

 

My real world experience of the TT were disappointing. Years ago on a previous 4WD, 4R, I bought them due to budget constraints.
The conditions were in the SoCal mountains. Most of the short-lived miles were on Hwy 18. We lived at an elevation of 5,300 ft. and worked at an elevation of 1,200 ft.
So our commute was brutal on tires because the high speed, super-elevated curves. Dry traction was ok for an A/T tread buy not stellar like a soft compound road tire.
These tires were quiet during our short freeway part of our commute.
Wet traction was ok but hydroplaned through normal standing water that we expect on our roadways. During snow and icy conditions, R2 & R3, chains were required and installed on the front tires. Overall, these tires only lasted for 12,000 miles (less than one season) and were replaced with KO2's, which lasted for two years.

Our current 4R that came with factory Dunflops, only lasted 9,000 miles and were replaced with Michelin LT/X, LT 265-17's. They lasted for 2 1/2 years.
And currently we're on KO2's again but no longer live in the SoCal Mtns. and our day trips here in Western MT. don't involve high speed driving, except on our freeways.
Speed limit is 80mph but, we stick to the more scenic back roads most of the time.

Ps, we go to Costco for our tires. They often are less than other tire stores.

Perhaps you should stick with a dedicated aggressive off road tire. Definitely not a tire like TT

 

I have tried BFG KO2, Falken Wildpeak AT3W, Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac, Nitto Terra grappler. With outdoor activities I haven't found a workhorse as good as BFG KO2. Definitely there is a reason for that price tag imo.


Right now I'm trying Toyo Open Country AT3. Too early to say anything. But will see.

Anyways, looks like this is a different user group like the Michelin Defender group. So don't have anything for this topic. Just came to say I agree what you said about KO2.

 

They might have reintroduce it recently but that tread pattern has been out for years.
Rugged Trail comes to mind.

 

Read, it's what I did.

 

Rugged Trails were the Dunlops of the 2nd gen Tacoma TRD Off Road - the first thing new owners got rid of.

 

They haven't been through a full winter yet, but I really like the trail terrain T/A we have on the GX. They've handled extremely well in dirt/gravel/heavy rain/light snow thus far.

 

That tread pattern has me wondering if they can be rotated to run in either direction.

 

They look like a nice tire, perhaps a competitor to the Michelin LTX AT2?

 

Still pondering the tire decision as the stock Dunlops approach 10k. Tire Rack has a great comparison tool. Following link is sorted for AT in the stock 265 size. Trail Terrains are down the chart but still rated excellent. The Pinzas have my attention, along with the Michelin Defender if I go non-AT.

Recommend you give the Trail Terrains another look--tread pattern, tread/tire compound, etc. are different than the Rugged Terrain. BFG has been clear that this isn't a reboot of the Rugged Terrain.

 

Just reviving this thread to see how they’re doing for people, especially curious about packed snow performance. Have been using Nokian WR G4s on my 4th gen with no complaints in the snow, just wanting something with a little more A/T tread for summer.
