How big of an issue is the needle bearing?

Seems that it worked fine for over 10 years before Toyota screwed something up.

Is this being fixed at the factory level or just though TSBs?

If I has to guess, 30 percent chance you’ll hear a bad bearing

Less if you don't listen as hard lol

I’m about to put a deposit on a base SR5 4x4, color and interior color unknown from Walnut Creek Toyota at MSRP. I don’t want to be chasing tech bulletins when my 2013 and the 2020 I got my daughter were trouble free.

The latest Toyota TSB that addresses the issue, T-SB-0012-19 (Rev 1 Feb 8, 2019) covers only 2016 – 2019 model year 4Runners. The fix is to replace the whole differential. Haven’t seen anything targeting 2020+ models yet.

Without a TSB it sounds like it’s been at the discretion of dealers to replace the diffs. Some folks have to go to battle with them to recognize the problem and fix it.

With the needle bearing issue and all the electronic “feature” problems of 20+ models I think I’ll hold onto my 2018 for a long time.

As mentioned above, the TSB no longer applies to 2020 and newer 4Runners. So if you have the misfortune of the noisy bearing you need to work with your dealer to have the front diff replaced. Some have had more luck than others, it took us 4 visits with our dealer to finally get them to hear and acknowledge this issue. We just had our diff replaced this past week and we're pretty sure the noise is coming back already. At this point, the choice will be the ECGS bushing on our own dime or trade the 4Runner in.. As long time Toyota owners (2nd 4Runner, a Tacoma, on 2nd Tundra), we are leaning towards trading it in and trying a different brand for a change. Pretty much had enough of Toyota.

I had that adventure with my 2007 FJ cruiser that had a bad throwout bearing. Toyota didn’t want to fix it and claim there was nothing wrong with it, even though the transmission was refusing to shift into second and third gear, eventually after harassing the dealer for six months, they installed a new transmission.

Toyota doesn’t like recalls, they do TSBs.

I’ve got a 18’ SR5 with no issues. Zero warranty claims on the 3/36 warranty.

Had the fuel pump recall done last spring with no problems.

No problems thus far with the drive train or suspension despite having the dreaded spacer lift.

The odds are in your favor that you will have a positive vehicle ownership experience.

So I put a deposit down for a 2022 base model SR5 four-wheel-drive, we will see what color and interior color combinations will arrive first, since I told them I don’t care what it looks like.
