    Waiting at the dealership while the 4Runner was being serviced and I was checking out a '22 Tundra. Is it just me or is it really low rent that the blacked out A and B pillar trim are just sloppily taped on? Hope this sort of attention to detail doesn't end up on the 6th gen 4Runner.

    Toyota has been doing this for years on the Tacoma B pillars. I agree it's pretty lame to use a black sticker to simulate a painted A pillar.

    Wow. That's just...wow. I'm slowly coming to the conclusion that I should try and pick up a final model year 5th gen to hedge my bets prior to the 6th gen. That's some Stellantis level QA right there.

    It's a long list...
    People, especially us Toyota enthusiasts have a long memory of who price gouges and who doesn't. Dealers think they are getting away with it, but eventually the pendulum swings the other way. A quick buck today means a lost one tomorrow.

    Yup. And, they're the ones enabling dealers to keep gouging people.

    But, there are dealerships selling at MSRP. If people were willing to travel a bit to go to an honest dealer, the other dealers would have to adjust their prices to stay in business.

    Honestly, I can't imagine paying $5K over MSRP for a 4Runner, Tundra, Tacoma, etc. Money must be growing on trees in some neighborhoods.

    Lots of goodies
    Nope, they just finance it for 84 months and end up paying way more than the $5k mark up anyway. $5k spread out over 7 years isn’t enough to be all that noticeable at the wallet for most because of that. Cash buyers should be able to negotiate that away, and if not - go shop elsewhere.

    Over on the Tundra forums there are a whole lot of complaints about the new truck. Bad turbos, random stalling, wind noise, misaligned panels, and on and on. Beware the 6th gen 4runner, especially if production moves to the US.

    Never buy the first year of any model vehicle. Better to buy in the middle of the production run where the teething issues are gone, and the tooling isn't worn out (I say as I contemplate picking up a 22MY :confused:)


    RE the 6th gen. I don't think they will move production, but I could be wrong. Right now the GX, LX, LC, 4R, and Prado are all built side by side. I know everything is going to TNGA, but I don't see them moving production stateside for the 4R. If they did, the GX would follow and they don't have any "openings" in the plants here for 2X model production. Tacoma was moved to Mexico to make room for more Tundra/Sequoia production on the same line. That move was also done due to the fact that the Taco and Hilux will start to amalgamate into a "single model".

    I'm more interested in the drivetrain configuration supposedly going into the new Lexus TX 550h+. 2.4cyl I4 turbo (T24A-FTS) & 8AT with an electric motor sandwiched between the ICE & AT. Supposedly it is a plug in hybrid drivetrain. Rumor is 4cyl turbo + 8AT for the 6th gen, and I will put a fiver on the 4R getting the same style hybrid setup as the new Tundra at a minimum. My guess is the drivetrain will be as follows;

    Base: 2.4 cyl I4 turbo & 8AT (Base SR5/TRDOR?)
    Premium: 2.4 cyl I4 turbo & 8AT + Hybrid (SR5P, TRDORP, TRD PRO?)
    Limited: 2.4 cyl I4 turbo & 8AT + Hybrid (Limited/Prime?)

    These are an educated guess at this point. The TRD trims we enjoy now may go away and become packages on SR5 or Limited which IMHO makes more sense. Toyota needs to pare it down.

    SR5 (base/premium package/TRD package)
    Limited (TRD package)
    Platinum (guess, since there is a Sequoia/Tundra version, likely Taco version coming)
    Capstone (I hope not, probably would eat into GX sales)
    Prime (could be interesting depending on how it is set up)

    This seems worse than other first year Toyota products, even though others haven't been without their issues. But yes, avoiding the first year is common sense. I hope the 4runner stays in Japan for the next gen, but I'll likely get one of the last 5th gens as it's proven old tech appeals to me, even though a 4 banger turbo 4runner that got 25mpg or more is appealing to me too.

    The 3rd gen Tacos have definitely had their share of issues as well. Hopefully they get everything figured out with the turbo, and the quality issues get addressed.

    I very highly doubt that Toyota will get rid of the TRD packages on the 6th gen 4Runner. There's too much money to be made. So much that they added a TRD trim to the RAV4.

    One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 34 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 32yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
    I came to that conclusion at New Years. I was dead set on waiting for the 6th gen but after checking out the new Tundra I came away very disappointed. IMHO the new Tundra is the bellwether on the 6th gen and the massive increase of complexity(mainly turbo plumbing) convinced me to put down a deposit on a 5th gen in January.
    Prior to New Years when I heard the 6th gen is going to be delayed for another year I was bummed, but now it is good news. If the dealer doesn’t come up with a 2022 to my liking I will just hang on and take a 5th gen 2023. I am in no hurry and for +50 grand I will not make compromises on what I want.

    Little do they know (or more than likely they do) that they are driving away the same people that provide those beans for them to count.

    I’m in the market for a ‘22 T4R and working with a dealership that’s an hour and a half away and in another state. My local dealership I have always used is charging a $4K markup on every new vehicle and I promise I won’t be forgetting that in the future.

    Having and still owning Tundras and 4Runners at the same time since 2011, Toyota does show more pride built into the 4Runners. I can show you the door panel trim on my 2020 Tundra compared to the door panel on our 2020 4R and you can see exactly the type of stuff that I'm talking about.

    I believe it. Different plants, and different approach/mentality behind the vehicle being produced for sure. There is a reason why the stuff that comes out of the Tahara plant in Japan is like it is.

    I agree 100% with build quality between the plants. I decided to stick with vehicles coming out of the Japan factory. Our GX was bulletproof and our 4Runner appears to be headed that way as well. There are also numerous videos of people having issues with the new Tundras.
