2022 TRD ORP Missing Basic Tech

The thing that surprised me in a you-gotta-be-kidding-me moment was when my window washer fluid ran dry.

There is no indication on the dash that the window washer fluid is low! There is a dipstick in the reservoir!

What?!? I thought my SR5 "premium" would have 40+ year tech on it that was on my first car, a lowest trim '86 Nissan Sentra.

 

I can't believe that they haven't made automatic hatchback open / close feature for any 4 Runner through 2022

 

When your company’s product holds solid, long term market share because of multi-level reliability, why would you add something to it that is more complex and presents a possibility of failure, no matter how slight? And also adds to the price. It ain’t broke.

 

You bought a vehicle that is based on the 2010 platform…. what did you expect? You bought a tried and true product refined over the last 13 model years. You should’ve done your research and waited for the 6th gen. I currently have a deposit on a 2022 ORP, if yours is the right color I’d be happy to take it off your hands.

 

One would think if you are wanting those features you would make sure they are offered on what you are purchasing ! The 4Runner is a very dated platform. The new ones aren't very different than my 2014. We looked at them in '19 when we bought our Tundra.

 

I rented a Jeep Grand Cherokee with automatic hatchback open/close and honestly I didn't like it. It takes too much time to open and close it in my opinion. Even if you do it by hands it moves slower due to motor I guess. So I glad 4Runner doesn't have it, quite useless thing in my opinion. In two weeks I drove Cherokee I sort of adapted and planned opening hatch ahead, but I didn't miss the feature when I got back to my 4Runner.

Maybe I'm getting older, but I think that Toyota put quite a lot of unnecessary tech in 2022 4Runners comparing to my old 2010 SR5. Besides my 2022 TRD Off-Road has automatic headlights now, but there's no option to turn off headlights manually. It's either auto or lights on. And headlights stay on when engine off and doors open, the only way to turn them off is to close doors and wait 30 sec : )

 

I thought the most useless feature for me personally that I would never use was the heated seats. I go to work at 2am so I found that to be the most useful features

 

Living in Minnesota, I find the heated seats to be very useful!

 

The heated seats make me feel like I have to pee.

 

Honestly, the only thing I'd like to add in regards to features is a button on the key fob to wind down the rear window. All the other things I've wanted have been addressed. Waiting on the motorolla ma1 to be shipped

 

One of the first things I noticed about the new 4Runner we just bought is that missing key fob Auto Down rear window button. Our '99 has it and am a bit disappointed Toyota dropped that feature. I do love that the rear window switch inside the vehicle is now Auto Up/Down though. .

 

Agreed! That was another thing I was surprised to not see.

 

I had a 2005 Limited that I bought brand new and pretty sure it was on that key fob.

I have a bare bones Corolla as a company car, the key fob for it is much nicer quality than what came with my ORP. Some of the things just make ya scratch your head. Oh well…still love this vehicle.

That was a complain since 2010 when gen 5 was introduced. Not sure why Toyota never listened. I would even settle on holding unlock button for 3 sec or press it twice for example...

Interesting. Same results here on my Pro... maybe this is a feature only on the Limited? The video is from 2020, so I would assume it's available on some trim model.

 

Must be a Limited only feature. Have to try to do something to make up for it’s hideous front end.

 

I’m not sure when Toyota discontinued the rear window button on the key fob. Did 4th Gens have it?

My 2000 3rd Gen had it and I’d get unintended back window openings sometimes when I pressed the key fob lock button. This was a common problem on 99-01 model years and there was a TSB to address it and changed out the Backdoor ECU and new key fobs. Maybe Toyota discontinued the fob control after that.

4th Gens do have the button on the key fob. On my 4th gen the button on the key fob is lot more useful than the button on the hatch of my 5th gen that's for sure..

 

Guess that's another Limited/Pro only feature, didn't work on my ORP .

 

You won't believe it, we used to have to turn a key to start the car too! Unbelievable

 

Didn't even have to do that on my 88 caprice. It did have an adjustable passenger seat though....

 

I did not even know that was a thing. I've owned 10 cars newer than a 1986 model, and none of them have had a washer fluid indicator light.

 

I think the simplicity of the 4Runner and the reliability that comes with it draws the following it has. There are few other vehicles like this in the market, and demand is high. Sure, I miss memory seating and automatic lights, but the reliability and build quality are more important to me.

 

If Toyota still built their basic 1980s pickups that didn't even have A/C there would still be a line of dudes around the block who would be ready to fork over 2022 money for them.

If you need to have the latest tech Toyota is just not your brand. If you want the Kalashnikov of personal transportation, then you've come to the right place.
