Sorry, but I totally disagree with this mindset.

I put about 30K miles/year on the 4Runner. If I can squeeze out a few extra MPG's I'm all for it.

I can't off-road in a Prius, or tow a boat, etc. I'll take the best I can get in a vehicle that has the capability I need.

False. Your cruising speed has a huge impact on your mileage. I got 12 MPG driving up north last Friday at 80 MPH. I got about 18 driving home at 55-65 MPH. That's a serious difference.

Aside from that, there are other things you can do to get a little extra economy out of it.

I realize that the 4Runner will never get "great" or even "good" fuel economy. I still do what I can when I can to get the most out of it.

What's the towing capacity on them? I don't really tow anything heavy, but it's good to know that I can.

Must be a nice boat! :)

    Nice! Those Mercruisers are sweet!

Weak. It must be due to short wheelbase or something, as the Wrangler has a lower towing capacity as well (at least back when I checked).

For the life of my vehicle so far, my overall mileage seems to be 18.1 MPG so far, since I have never reset the MPG counter. Sometimes, generally cruising at 65-70 with no traffic, I can get 20-21 MPG, but no traffic is hard to find.

This is my experience exactly over the 10k miles I’ve had my Limited. But note what I’ve posted before: The computer’s MPG estimate is prob optimistic by a few tenths to maybe a half MPG.

I did wonder about this. You think it's because the speedometer (in every vehicle I have ever had) optimistic by 1-2mph? Or other optimism?

Seems like if the odometer was "optimistic" that would be illegal. Just not sure how these things are or are not interrelated...

I think the odometer and speedometer both work off of the same sensors. You are correct about the speedometer. When checking against GPS on stock size tires it was always off by about 2 or 3%. With 285 / 70 R17 tires it would read almost perfectly accurate.

I have a funny feeling that if the local gas stations would quit putting ethanol in the frikken fuel, the local vehicle's mileage would go up a fair amount.

I could be wrong, but I've seen a number of references in the FSM that specify these vehicles don't play well with ethanol.
Probably more power, too. I'd love to find out, but all the local station, off-brand or name-brand, all put ethanol in the fuel. I have a sick feeling Gov. Brown, here in Oregon, has a lot to do with the ethanol intrusion.

It used to be, when we first moved up here, that they only used the ethanol fuel in the winter. Even then, most stations had a few pumps that didn't have ethanol, even in winter. Now, you can't get away from the stuff...

Humph. All I can say is "humph"...

Oh, I understand, these trucks work fine on 87 octane. It's what the ECU, and the rest of the systems, are designed for. It's the ethanol they don't get along with.

So, IMO, 87 octane WITH ethanol, lower mileage, WITHOUT ethanol, higher mileage, more power. I'll dig through the FSM again to see if I can find what I've seen before...

    Have fun, all!
    Pat☺

First tank 18.0 on the screen. Calculated to 17.985.
I've never had any vehicle come that close. Must be a fluke, we'll see.

Around town I can get 22mpg on 8-10 mile trips if I catch the lights. Highway it looks like a realistic 17.5 at 70mph.
Being stopped at a light brings the numbers down quick. There might be something to the auto start/stop.

I've removed the roof basket and crossbars, swapped to stock size/weight Toyo AT3's and have an AVS bug deflector.
Wife says that I drive like an old man.

I'd be curious to see what the FSM says about this. I ran E-10 in my '03 and there weren't any issues.

I'm sure there would be a slight improvement in fuel economy, but it might not be enough to really make a difference.

Unfortunately, the only non-ethanol gas available in Wisconsin is usually premium, so it's too expensive to be worthwhile.

It doesn't really matter, though, because we're not getting rid of ethanol anytime soon.

On a serious note, for those of you with throttle controllers (like the pedal commander, etc.) - how much of a difference in mileage have you notice while using the “performance modes” vs without?

Here is my fuelly app results over the first 7900 miles & 29 fill ups ... 18.9 average so far. No lift. Stock Tires, carrying some weight (work equipment inside AND on the roof at times, and band equipment most weekends).

About 40/60 City vs Highway with only a couple of brief stints off-road (the dips into the 17s and 16s show you when those occured!!).

All this was during winter, hopefully I get a little more now that it looks like the freezing mornings are gone (less warm-up time)

No downhill, I swear. On top of that, that drive includes 10 miles of city driving. Once I got on the highway, I kept fixed speed and minimized breaking

Well, it's not about what I an do on a flat stretch, for me, it's what can I do on this whole tank of gas. Have to brake at some point!
