I just filled up. Checked the dash display.
    Range = 347
    AVG MPG = 17.7

    347 miles / 17.7 MPG = 19.6 gal

The basic formula is approximately :
    Range = AvgMPG x 19.5

On long trips I see 20 Mpg and close to 400 miles on a tank.

Checked mine yesterday at fill-up due to this thread, it said 385 miles. Wife and I were staying in a cabin 2 hrs away (got home a bit ago) and fuel economy was 21.6 mpg for the trip home on state highways and back roads. Bone stock truck.

The opening question should also ask at what elevation one lives. The higher the elevation, the better gas mileage should be. Most of my driving is at about 3200 feet.

Not sure how my 2021 TRD Pro calculates range but not very happy to see this vs what used to see on my TRD ORP even after lift + sliders + every *&$@ skid. It always showed me over 320 range around city with same mpg.
This 18mpg on the pic almost all highway with stock size tires. Additional weight is sliders and full skids.

    Hmmm…
That 18.4 MPG is since the last fill up, or a long time running average?

    Since last fill up.
Before I fill up it was 15mpg with lot of wait time at school parking lot. This fill up was almost all highway and slow speed no traffic state park roads.

If I did the same trip with my TRD ORP with stock size KO2 I would get about 20mpg with 400miles range I bet.

    Edit-

Found this old pic - My TRD ORP with 265/70R17C BFG KO2 passing mountains on i70.

So you got 15 MPG then filled your tank. The computer took that 15MPG and figured if you’re going to keep driving that way, with a 19.5 gallon tank, you will be able to go 15 x 19.5 = 292.5 miles.
The Range screen showed 293. It’s all working as designed. After a fill up.

As you drive there must be a different algorithm that updates the Range based on sensor data to determine current consumption and fuel left in the tank.

    From the owner manual:
    ■ Cruising range
Displays the estimated maximum distance that can be driven with the quantity of fuel remaining
    • This distance is computed based on your average fuel consumption. As a result, the actual distance that can be driven may differ from that displayed.
    • When only a small amount of fuel is added to the tank, the display may not be updated.
When refueling, turn the engine switch off. If the vehicle is refueled without turning the engine switch off, the display may not be updated.

Yes, the fuel tank capacity is 23 US gallons. But Toyota considers the tank empty at about 19.5 when the Low Fuel warning light comes on. That gives you about 50 miles to find a gas station.
Thats why 19.5 is used in the initial Range calculation.

That’s a pretty reasonable decision. Not like the 3rd Gen 4Runners where the fuel warning light came on when there was 5 gallons left in the tank.

I haven't actually run the tank low enough to get the fuel light yet, since I've only had it for a few weeks, but most vehicles don't read 0 on the Range when the fuel light comes on in my experience. So there's probably some margin built in when it reads 0 but I wouldn't think it would be 3.5 gallons at 0.

One time I got the fuel light, drove another 25 miles to a station, my Range was at 1 mile. I put in 20.2 gallons. When I started it again the range was 350.

Last fill up was 407 miles. Todays fill up it was 409

Also the miles i had ran on the last tank was 373.6 miles and the computer said i had another 81 left to go.

fill up added right at 17 gallons. So the 22.2 mpg on computer was spot on this time

Mine was a steady 350 and it has dropped to 330. This is after the dealer did the oil change after my Toyota care expired. I wonder what oil they used. Planning on draining the oil and replacing it with OEM Toyota oil which I heard is good, even though they are made by ExxonMobil but with a different additive package(Moly+).
I switched recently to non-ethanol during winter to keep moisture out of the gas tank. Top tier gasoline only.
Will see if the mileage increases after the oil change.

Okay, I did the oil change, replacing the dealer serviced Pennzoil Gold(It is synthetic blend and not full synthetic) and had only 300 miles on it. So, I changed it with Idemitsu 0w 20 as I heard they pioneered and introduced the 0w 20 viscosity grade in Japan since early 2000's for efficiencey which is widely used today.

Anyways, my mileage computer which never showed more than 17mpg in my 48k mileage experience is now showing 17.9 after driving for probably 75 miles. The last time I topped off, I calculated the miles and the gallons I put in stopping at the "click" and not topping off ( which i heard is a bad thing to do for your evap canister), and I got 18.2 mpg.

I use non ethanol gas, fyi.

Mine must be defective because it reads “Feed Me Sucker”
Last week I put 21.7 gallons and the cruise number was 1.

This was after a sustained head and cross wind for about 70 miles.
Usually it’s only down to a 1/4 tank at that gas stop.

And I was also dragging my 6x10 v-nose cargo trailer.

    Nah, I know it’s fine.

When a person has worked for more than 55 years, paying all their due’s, gas prices are not going to stop me.

I got 402 mi range my last tank. Filled up yesterday on the way home from work, I had gone exactly 300 miles and it was showing 102 miles range left. I did the math, I got 19.75 MPG that tank.

That tank was strictly back and forth to work, 31 mi each way, about 70% highway.

I also have my throttle controller set to "eco" which actually did help, though is even more miserable to drive than stock.

No, it's an aftermarket item. If you've heard people talk about a Pedal Commander or Sprint Booster, this is the item that they're talking about. It plugs in between the factory harness and the drive-by wire accelerator pedal, and you can change the throttle response via the remote.
