Ridiculous Pricing on New 4Runners

Or maybe everyone panics and sells off their SUVs. This may be the beginning of “peak 4runner.”

I cant imagine selling mine off yet, Im enjoying it too much. But that’s because thankfully, for now anyway, I have a beater to resort to, and fuel costs arent a major budget calculation in the present.

That said, I havent filled up with the expensive gas yet lol.

Maybe all this will get me to soften up on possible new engines for the 6th gen. As long as Toyota remembers the 4runners place and recognises that it’s being currently compared to jeeps and the new bronco. Cuz I wont be interested in buying another highlander…already got one

 

I'm thinking we're getting very close to the tipping point.

I drive 300 miles a week just getting to work, and it is what it is. Anything I'd want to replace it with would cost more or get possibly worse mileage.

I'll just have to bite the bullet. These past few years have sucked, what's one more kick in the nuts from the universe?

 

Yep the Chinese love all of it also...keep printing and more indebted to them. Our printing and borrowing from them indirectly supports the Chinese who support the Russians financially hmm.

Maybe we should start manufacturing again here both consumer items as well oil. Sadly I don't see that happening.

So glad I was fortunate to get my 4R when I did gosh, I knew stuff would get bad but this bad wow.

 

Nation wide it si a cluster. This may sound silly but contact your local senators office and demand a stop to Russian oil purchases. Yes, we imposed sanctions but have not stopped buying oil since we are not in a position to simply switch on production here in the US. Prices could go to $7, 8, 10 if we suddenly stopped getting Russian crude and waited for our production to ramp up. Biden has a really difficult decision (politically, not common sense) is to do just that.

I've cancelled my plans for this summer. Just not going to happen. I refuse to be coerced into buying $5 a gallon fuel when the worlds largest oil reserve is 2 hours from my house and isnt being maximized.

 

Believe it or not, I'm actually more excited to hit the trails now because I assume that with the cost of gas it will limit some others from going.

if gas prices stay high and you are able to somehow afford it, this might be one of the best years to get out on the trails and enjoy the scenery.

Trail noobs and wannabees will steer clear. Only the most seasoned trail junkies and people that are desperate for nature will be out there. In fact, I was planning on going to one of the events in Kansas this year and I have decided to cancel that one so that I can apply the gas towards Colorado later in the year.

Although this is a major con for many, you got to see the pros (as selfish as they may be sometimes)

Give it a few months, the Permian basin will start to get active. The problem with exploration out there is the margins are small. But if you cut out the Chupacabras in the Kremlin, well now you can make some money and actually afford to pay American workers.

Keep in mind the OPEC Cartel is not increasing output...... and they know if they dont, then its a double edge sword. We will frack and handle our business here.

In Texas we need a strong oil economy.

 

Apparently both the United States and Europe like being put in vulnerable positions when it comes to oil and energy. It seems the green movement is clearly far more important than energy independence. Follow the new leaders Russia and their new buddies China.

 

Depends on interest rates. Generally, the way the Fed manages inflation is by raising rates. I remember my first new car, interest rates were 12% (a long, long, time ago...)

So much of our economy is entirely dependent on cheap money. Real estate is mostly driven by private equity buying properties with cheap money. If that goes away, who know, the bottom falls out of real estate? #notaneconomist

We've been living with cheap energy for so long, we've built an entire infrastructure that is unprepared for expensive energy. Will be interesting to see where this falls out. Maybe Putin will just go full psychopath and launch the nukes, then this will all be moot.

 

Energy independence will never come from oil. Short-term, we can replace foreign oil, long-term, costs will keep escalating. Not to mention, the downsides of fracking is the destruction of aquifers.

But hey, who needs fresh water.

After calling mother Toyota to have the dealership fix the needle bearing, not the driveshaft as they wanted to first, they (per Toyota) replaced the front differential. This was back in December. Was fine for a bit, but started happening again so instead of going through Toyota and Harr Toyota, I ordered an ECGS bushing. It was installed yesterday but only drove it a few miles so far and no noise or vibration. I'll know better today. Fingers crossed. My dealership service was awful, they were either trying to screw Toyota or me. And to boot, when I picked it up, there was dent in the drivers door of my new SR5P with 150 miles on her. They did fix it but I won't bring it there for anything now.

 

They're gonna feel really stupid when they realized they paid $75K for a vehicle that gets 12mpg and gas is $8 a gallon this summer. My step daughter said it's already $7 near her place in LA.

 

I am hoping for better fuel economy by getting a runner versus my taco. We shall see.

 

Most Taco owners seem to report the reverse.

 

I have a manual trans, so that seems to be lower, and right now im getting 14.4 mpg based on my compter.

But if it's worse, then so be it. my 2017 (bought in late 2016) has under 41k miles, so I don't drive many miles day to day. It will be the long trips that break the bank. Maybe time to get the motorcycle back on the road.

 

coming from a 17 taco to 21 runner, its definitely the other way around with fuel economy, albeit not by much though. still no regrets in the switch

 

I highly doubt they (or anybody for that matter) can sell you a vehicle with no markup. (Translation: No profit.) I could believe they're selling for MSRP these days, but that has a very decent profit built into it for the dealer.

 

sales managers take losses on vehicles all the time (or at least they did before the pandemic). used cars older than 90 days usually get dumped asap because it costs money from the bank to keep them on the lot. it all depends upon what their goals are (maybe they'll get a bonus for hitting a certain volume/quota by the end of the month). that's one reason the finance guys can be so pushy offering all kinds of products, or tacking points onto your loan, trying to make that money back for the dealership.

 

id say a dealership selling at MSRP in todays market, is NOT marking things up. the difference, a few years ago, you could get them down from MSRP on most vehicles.

 

A markup, in this context, is a markup above and beyond msrp. Nobody is expecting any business to sell at a loss.

Full disclosure: I work at a Toyota dealership, so I understand the market and how dealerships work. True, all dealerships occasionally sell a vehicle at a loss. The operative word is occasionally. If they sold all vehicles at zero markup, it would be much harder to make money. That said, most dealerships make very little money on new car sales, much more on used car sales, and most of their money off of service.

 

yeah, outside of luxury/boutique brands, new car/truck sales don't have much profit anymore (pre-covid). used vehicle sales and service departments keep the lights on.

 

Yikes! 14mpg, that's Tundra territory.

Maybe you'll get better, but the conditions that get you 14 in the Taco will probably get you similar in the 4R. At least you'll be more comfortable in the 4R.

 

I got 15.1 hand calculated on my last tank of mixed driving in the colder climate. I say that’s fuel efficient compared to my Tahoes 10 winter 12-13 summer mpg. 4 runner will probably be better once summer hits.

 

You lucked out for sure. They laugh at you now if you even ask to be put on the list. I got a 2021 Tacoma TRD pro from there. they didn't realize they had it because they slapped an offroad sticker on the back so when you looked down the line on the back side lot they said "we have no pros"

 

Carvana is offering is offering about 8% less than a month ago. Many dealers are being told any trades on gas guzzlers offer 10% or more below 20mpg. May as well keep it at that point.

 

They only offered $42,280 for my sr5 premium with 150 miles on it when I paid $44,000

 

Taco manuals are horrible for mpg unless you take a long highway trip. If you are doing short trips around town then 14 sounds about right.
