I went to a local Toyota dealer today to take delivery of my wife’s new 2022 Highlander Limited AWD. I work for the company that owns Southeast Toyota so I am able to order direct from Southeast Toyota under the associate purchase program and not pay the ridiculous dealer prices. I was shocked to see what the dealer is asking for new 4Runners. A 2022 TRD Pro for $75K?!? Holy shit! Makes me even more glad I work for the company that I do so I can get the associate price. I am still waiting for a 2022 TRD ORP that I ordered in November to replace the 2020 TRD ORP that I have now. It is taking a long time due to supply issues but the money I will save will be well worth it.

Your dealer is marking the TRD Pro up. MSRP is about 54k which can be had but it’s hard.

Yes, it is hard but possible; I got mine for MSRP at Avondale in AZ. The only dealer in AZ that doesnt mark up the TRD Pro as far as I know.

Picked my '22 SR5P at MRSP, but they said I had to purchase LoJack for $700, no choice in the matter. After dealing with their service dept. over my needle bearing I will never step foot in there again. Harr in Worcester, MA

IMO, buying a new vehicle right now makes zero sense. Let the market recover, the feds adjust the prime,, fuel prices continue to climb and watch dealers begin sinking because the economy is tanking. Then is a great time to buy new. Below MSRP will become a regular thing.

I never really saw many 4 runners selling under msrp like chevys and what not. I remember end of year sales and stuff with $10,000 off msrp and special financing deals and such to clear lots for the new year models (mostly American brands)

I’ve got the bug for a new 4Runner. I will be transitioning out of a 2006 Tundra SR5 4WD Double Cab that I bought new for myself.

There’s nothing wrong with the Tundra, it’s just that I have new car fever right now. It’s a bad time to want a new vehicle. And that’s just it. I “want,” but I don’t “need.”

I’m going to try to discipline myself to wait until this pricing lunacy ends. I am beginning to wonder if fuel prices sky rocket that this won’t cause the insane prices on these gas guzzling pickups and SUV’s to plummet, at least enough to enable a reasonable deal to be made again?

I’m not needing to go all out on a 4Runner either. I no longer require 4WD. I’ll be satisfied with just an SR5, or the SR5 Premium, in 2WD.

What I can’t understand is the pricing on used 4Runners right now. In many cases, used ones are more expensive than new ones. I am not going to get suckered in to over paying for a used one with 30,000 plus miles on it. When these prices finally fall / adjust, I think a lot of folks are going to be really sorry that they over paid. And if they took out loans to over pay for their used SUVs or trucks, I would think they are really going to be under water!

I could pay cash right now for a new 4Runner if I wanted, but I refuse to pay sticker or over sticker. In the past, I have always been accustomed to negotiating a satisfying deal for myself on a new vehicle.

What’s happening right now is sheer lunacy. Let’s see what happens if and when gasoline hits 5, 6, or $7.00 a gallon. Who’s going to want to buy a 4Runner or big pickup truck then? The dealers will have to deal then to move any. And that’s when I’ll roll the dice and buy mine, gambling that gasoline will eventually come back down to normal levels.

In the mean time, my well maintained antique ‘06 Tundra is doing just fine. I’m at 178,XXX miles, which isn’t too unreasonably high for miles on an ‘06.

At the rate inflation is going, id try hard to get into a 22 before the 23 comes out. There is no end in sight to the Ukraine war.

The 4runner I have was stickered for $43600. I put money down and financed $38000

    They have a 2018 4runner with 76,000 miles and are asking $38,000

Nope made sense to get the 2022 trd off road.

When I purchased mine I paid $44,000 I think it was for a sr5 premium and the few options I wanted, sitting at the sales desk I was looking at a 2018 as well, plain sr5 33,000 miles and scratched and dinged up with a not that nice interior for $42,XXX...not sure how it was even show room floor worthy.

I too was shocked - I put on another my experience. I went through Capitol Toyota (Chattanooga TN) , dealt with Brandon...they have zero markups on their vehicles. I purchased a 2022 (lime Rush) TRD Pro for my wife - paid sticker and they gave me 500 bucks off for being a veteran. I called them on 2/1 got on the list and took delivery on 2/28.

When I bought my 21 last year, my salesman actually told me a new one would be cheaper. Whacky stuff.

Same. In the PNW there were never any great deals on 4runners. You would be doing really well to get a thousand or two off of MSRP.

Pre-pandemic (early 2015) I decided I was in the market for a Tacoma. Resale value on pickups in my area has always been insane. I found that it was cheaper to buy a new truck than a used one that was several years old. I haven't checked recently but assume that is exponentially amplified by the current environment.

Really is. They had a 10k markup on SR5s and ORs and a 15k markup on the pro at my local dealership. :(

Our local dealer has not had a new 4Runner on the lot since October. When I went and bought my new to me 18ORP, there were 7 used with between 39 and 165k miles. One was Toyota Certified but it was a 2 wheel drive.

Location will dictate most of the price variables. I paid $37k for a 39k mile 18ORP. I kind of had my hand forced to sell my Jeep since it had become a giant unreliable pain in the ass with less than 60k miles on it. I did however get a pretty damn nice trade in on my full loaded overland JKU. A few thousand dollars difference from a straight across deal.

that’s my thinking. MSRP is going to go up. I’m planning to trade my 2017 sport taco, hoping to get close to what I paid new, and as of yesterday I’m waiting on a 22 ORP at MSRP. I paid invoice on my taco, and don’t typically just accept MSRP, but work till I get to invoice. I don’t believe I could have done that with a 4Runner before this mess, so I figure the extra I’m getting on my 5 plus year old Tacoma easily makes up for paying MSRP on the 4Runner. Even after values settle, I don’t see the 4Runner losing too much. If it does, just means we will have to keep it.

Many people are paying MSRP for new, I think the main thing is being willing to travel to find the right dealership. When I was looking I was searching in a 250 mile radius and found plenty. Funnily enough, my local dealership was able to do a swap with another dealership and got me the 4Runner I have now at MSRP. I’m also in Indiana so the 4Runner isn’t as popular as it is out West etc. Keep looking and the deal will come up!

Might as well get the ball rolling on that. At this rate, we'll see 5 bucks by the end of the week. It jumped 50 cents earlier in the week, and about another 30 this weekend. I paid 3.39 last Tuesday, it's now 4.29.

I was looking into doing some overland trips this year, there was one event in CO I really wanted to go to, but now I'm starting to calculate fuel costs for them. 1,500 bucks in fuel for CO is a hard pill to swallow.

I am planning to take a mountain biking road trip to CO & UT from MD this September and the fuel costs may become a deterrent.

Don't know where you're at but we're also facing 50 cents/gallon increase since last Wednesday. We're already north of $5/gal and I'm confident that's not the end of it (despite the fact that none of our oil is impacted by the current conflict). We also have the absolute highest electric rates in the nation. For us it's not a gas/electric issue, inflation is the problem and the only apparent solution is to print more money.
