Help deciding on a lift

    Hey all,

    Just bought a 2022 TRD Pro and would like some bigger tires (looking at BFG K02s - 285s on the stock 17 in rims. It's a daily driver, but I do plan on overlanding with it now and then.

    Looking at OME for the lift, but I'm not sure which setup to go with. This is what I'm looking at - https://yotamafia.com/product/ome-old-man-emu-3-inch-lift-kit-5th-gen-4runner/

    Since this is the first mod, I'm not sure if I should go with both 2.5 in the front and rear or go 2.5 in front and 2 in rear. I eventually may get a c4 low profile bumper added on which would add around 100lb I believe (another 100 if I add a winch but I probably won't do that)

    Would it be best to match the lift on front and rear or is 2.5 in front with 2 in rear ok? First time ever doing a lift so I'm not sure.

    Not really going to be doing any rock crawling or anything like that - just some back roads for camping in the mountains.

    Anyone tips?

    I’ve got the billstein 5100 lift on mine (with my 285’s on the 17” pro wheels) plenty of lift for me, no rubbing…. Looks badass. I’ve got the lift maxed out at 2.5”.

    Doesn't say 2022, but I'm guessing it still works fine.

    Is it a 5100 in front and back? Both set to 2.5?

    I would venture that’s the same one I’ve got but not sure- the dealer actually put mine on before I purchased (under warranty now lol) it is level to my eyes so I would assume 2.5” in the front and 2” in the back. Sorry I can’t be more difinitive in my responses haha

    Since you have a 2022 TRD Pro this OME Nitro kit is a down grade. TRD Pro comes with basic 2.5 diameter shocks though it doesn't have a proper / usable lift.

    Regardless the 4Runner this OME nitro shocks are great for abuse on trails but ride comfort is not good. Bilstien5100 have good ride but they are smaller shocks.

    With my personal experience ELKA 2.5DC suspension are a big improvement from basic TRD Fox shocks and provide upto 3in lift. But you can adjust to 2.5 to clear 285/70R70. Tire brands like Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac with give true 33in tire with 285/70R17. BFG KO2 Load C (which i used) will give 32.8in. You can also go with softer tires like Falken Wildpeak AT3W SL which gives 32.76in tall tires. Some may recommend 255/80R17 as a 33in tire but last Friday while I was at a 4x4 shop for alignment one 4Runner got 255/80R17, I have one word, UGLY...!! Also 255/80R17 only come with load E so ride comfort would be bad.

    Other than my personal experience ELKAs I would also recommend you to look at other 2.5 diameter shocks like Fox 2.5DCs with adjusters, Kings 2.5 with adjuster (only come with one adjuster, may not be comfy as other dual adjusters at slow speeds), OME BP-51, Toytec Aluma 2.5, etc..

    Almost forgot, since you have narrow wheels (7in wide) it is not approved to run 285/70R17 tires. But there are people who run 285s on TRD Pro wheels. To run 285/70R17 minimum width is 7.5in which TRD Offroad wheels come with, but it won't look good on yours so might be a good option to look at after market wheels if you want to be in the safe specs.

    Echoing what kmeeg said. Don’t downgrade your Fox suspension.

    If you just want some lift get the Eibach pro lift springs if they make them for the 22.
    I don’t advocate for spacer lifts but if you’re going for looks more than function, may be an option.

    Toy tech makes a coil for your fox suspension that will allow you to keep your shocks. You spent all that extra money, mainly for the shocks I wouldn’t downgrade. If you’re set on changing the entire suspension though, go with King, Fox 2.5’s or Elka 2.5? Not super familiar with Elka. Anything else would be a downgrade to the vehicle.

    This is the one - Just ELKA 2.5DC front coil overs + rear shocks are expensive than a complete kit of Kings though. But according to Toytec they are better than Kings.

    +1 on this.

    The OME kit linked above will be a downgrade from your PRO suspension, which is the only real upgrade you get with a PRO.

    Edit: Bilstein 5100's will also be a huge downgrade from the PRO suspension.

    I would also add that Dobinson and Radflo make higher end suspension upgrades (in addition to those listed by @Antman ) if you're still thinking of chucking the PRO setup.

    Also, if your level of off-roading is "overlanding now and then", bigger tires and a lift are completely unnecessary.

    Dude, you spent the extra money on a Pro, don't put that cheap kit on it. I mean that would be good if you had a standard 4Runner, but your Fox shocks are better than what you're planning on putting on it.

    Why do you want to lift it? For just mild trails and "overlanding", it's not really necessary.

    If it's because it looks cool, yeah, then go for it. But just think carefully with what you purchase, you definitely don't want to downgrade your very expensive vehicle.

    Thanks for all the input everyone. Def will keep the Fox shocks the Pro came with. I guess a lot of my reasons are aesthetics, I admit, but I also don't want to lower the quality. - So would this be a good option since it keeps the shocks, but adds a little more height? Doing this then putting on new wheels with 285 tires?

    I just really like what I've seen from people posting their 4runner with the beefier tires.

    2017 SR5P with some stuff
    Keeep your stock suspension and tires and swap on a set of 8-8.5” wide rims with an offset of 0 to -6. That alone will make your Pro look beefier.

    Absolutely. Any time I've upgraded suspension on an offroad vehicle it was done as I told myself "I'll get better ground clearance and break-over angle this way...let's do this take my money!". Through eventual honest inner monologue I realized I just wanted it to look cooler.

    Nothing wrong with that at all! And once you're honest with yourself about why you need it, then one doesn't necessarily have to shell out top dollar for a high-end Icon or Kings, etc.

    Thanks again folks. I might actually skip doing any kind of lift for now. If I wanted to add some wider tires however (still 265s) does anyone have any recommendations for a good wheel to put them on?

    265 is the width of your tire. There can be some variation from one tire to another, but all 265's will be at least similar in width.

    If you want a more aggressive look with 265's, consider wheels with a slight negative offset, or tires with a more aggressive sidewall, or both. But, keep in mind that, even with stock size tires, you'll end up having some rubbing with negative offset wheels.

    Ah good to know. I'm new to all this so I appreciate the help. This is a good place to educate myself on this stuff.

    I was using to compare 265/70/17 with 285/70/17 and it looked like the 285 was taller, so I was thinking that had to do with height. Thanks for clearing that up though!

    Yes, a 285/70/17 will be taller and wider than a 265.

    The 265 = width in mm.
    The 70 is sidewall height as a percentage of the width.
    And, 17 is wheel size.

    I have no idea why they size them like that.

    The website you link might have a section that shows this information with better details.

    Now I'm thinking of going with either the Eibach springs or Toytec springs since they work with the Fox suspension my pro has. From there if I went with 285/70/17 tires should I also invest in some wider rims?

    These two videos are great. I really hope this guy keeps putting out content.
    OP, why not just get a kit from Westcott so you can keep your factory equipment that you paid good money for while also gaining a lift? These essentially just use factory parts with certain parts being replaced with wider/taller parts to lift the vehicle.

    What about on a '22 ORP with stock suspension? I'll be using mine for the same use case as OP. Just wanna clear 285's and have it leveled out. Not gonna be going too crazy as far as abuse goes with rock crawling.

    Then I wouldn't hesitate to go OME or Bilstein.

    5100's all around is a very inexpensive option. Eibach and Dobinson have some value options as well, and I'm sure others I'm forgetting.

    The PRO comes with a pretty nice Fox suspension, so you really don't want to mess with it unless you're going to 2.5" shocks with remote reservoirs.
