Hi Lift Jack/winch/recovery boards

I have a stock 2016 Trail 4runner and live in the desert Southwest. Seems as if everywhere I go offroad is desert and has no trees to winch from so I was thinking about getting a hi lift jack so at least I could put something under the wheels for recovery. Also, I am trying to locate a good storage place for my hi lift. I also see recovery boards for getting out of sand and mud and wonder if that would be a good option. Anyone out there dealing mostly with desert terrain? Any suggestions on direction? Thanks

 

The 'recovery boards' - Maxtrax and similar - seem to work brilliantly.

A Hi-Lift requires a lot of experience, training, and some solid points on the vehicle to lift with (which the stock 4R does not have). I don't think it's a great tool for solo recovery.

 

Thanks for the info MeefZah! I've been researching the recovery boards. Seems like Maxtrax is putting the best one out but with all the convoluted info on the web its hard to tell. Going along with my first post, my wife and I do most of our offroad by ourselves way out in the deserts. I will definitely pick up some Maxtrax for recovery. I don't have the cash to spend on new wheels so I am going to keep the stock wheels but I am thinking the first line of defense against getting stuck would be some off road tires. I have the stock ones on now. Any suggestions on a nice tire that would fit on the stock 2016 Trail wheels?

 

BF Goodrich KO 2's. They will last and last. 275/70/R17 is the largest without lifting the rig to prevent rubbing. These come with raised white letter and would look cool inside or out depending on the color of your rig.

 

You can't go wrong with any decent AT tire. BFG KO2s, Cooper Discoverer AT3, General Grabber, Toyo Open Country AT, all popular. I personally use Firestone Destination AT (formerly used the KO2) and I've been happy with them.

The stock Trail wheels are quite good. IMO there is no reason to change them.

 

Just received my set of Maxsa recovery boards. Now I have to find a place to store them in my 2016 4runner Trail. I am going to pass on the Hi lift jack for now as per the suggestions. Thanks

There was some guy on that Alaska offroad show on History channel that had a homemade version of that. Worked about half the time. Which is better than nothing, I guess.

 

yes they are stupid expensive I think there was a guy here in Co that made a couple but there is no real need for them here. Just wanted to share, Im sure some of you could either make one or find someone to make one
