I just purchased a 2004 4Runner that is in excellent condition except for the speaker system. I called Toyota about buying a replacement subwoofer that is in the back but according to them my VIN number does not show a subwoofer so they can't tell me what is in there. Anyone else have this problem? I already changed out all the other speakers but I can't seem to find a replacement for the Subwoofer. I guess at this point I need to take it out? Do they make an after market subwoofer that will fit in without any modifications?

Is it in the back passenger side with the factory covers over it? if so it's the jbl system and someone may have added it - if that's the case it's somewhat of a pain to get it torn down to where you can replace the sub, but worth it when you get in there. RF makes a shallow 8" DVC sub that will fit I nthere with no mods, and JL has a shallow mount that used the perfect amount of space but requires a little trimming on the inside where the magnet would hit in the sub enclosure. There are a lot of threads on the JBL system and JBL sub if you search with some step by step instructions. Let me know and if you need more direction when I have more time can throw some on here:)

Yes sir it is in the back on the passenger side. It's inside the panel. I'm wondering how hard it would be to install it myself. I'm assuming I have to completely take off the panel to get to it. I was told that the woofer is a "dealer item" because no company makes one that will fit other than Toyota. Not sure if that's true.

There are actually quite a few for sale in for sale items on forums for the full enclosure, and there are some with just the replacement jbl sub. Those two items are dealer items if you want ot replace the entire assembly. Typically people want to upgrade, and the enclosure it'self is good and the space inside it is perfect amount for both of those subs I listed above, I will replace mine soon and will go with the JL W3 or W0 DVC - dual voice coil - and I may replace the amp which is a simple process as well if you get down to it - you just have to take the leads from the stock amp/synthesis system and plug into the amp you want to use then amplify the signal before the wires go through th synthesis. There are write-ups on it.

As for getting access to the sub - it's not hard it's time consuming, you have to remove the panel, then the wheel arch panel as well and then you have access, with the Rockford Fosgate sub you do not have to drill out the back braces at all it's shallow enouch, with the Jl you do have ot like dremel some clearance in the back as the magnet is too big. but the JL is arguably a better sub. Anyway - if you can take a panel off, you can easily do the job of changing it out.

Yes, will fit but for the JL's as mentioned above there are some "plastic extrusion" pieces inside the stock mount that need to be trimmed back a bit - like dremeled down or cut with an exacto knife. I would link you to the other post that have this but am at work and can't access the other sites that have it. Well google returned this... http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...Bx38PP3UjkRraqSzhMBkLg&bvm=bv.142059868,d.cGw

Yeap that's why forums are here and honestly I research for years for everything I think I may do, and have had around 40 vehicles so sadly isn't much I haven't done over the years!

There are several really good 4runner sites out there, and each have their positives. Then there are general forums as well that are good!
