Hello all, New to 4Runners. Bought one from an auction with some front bumper damage. will need a hood and front bumper and fender I think. Not sure exactly what I need..
I’d like to just get a TRD pro front bumper, but can only find that upper part. Not sure what I can salvage from the current one. I don’t have the truck yet, pick it up Mon. I will post pics to get some guidance if you would be so kind.... trying to order parts ahead of time...

Maybe you can see something that needs replaced... Or ideas what lies beneath..

I’m also very confused...didn’t know what trim this was,, Thought limited because of the wheels, but has the mech 4x4 handle... also has the leather with red stitching. I think it’s a Trail premium, but why does it have 20’ limited wheels on it??

What year is it? I dont see any SR5, or Off Road badges on the side where they normally are, but if you have a 4wdstick, it’s probably an the road trim. The 22s come in Sport trim with those wheels, but I think those have a dial for the 4wd.

Hopefully the frame is fine. There is an aluminum crush bumper under the cover, it would be interesting to see how that fared. Could you post some pics with the bumper cover off when you take delivery?

I would check the radiator supports, mounts, and the radiator it self. There are also some air conditioning lines in harms way around there.

Looks mostly cosmetic. I personally would remove the front bumper and take a closer look (bumper has got to go anyway). The hood might be salvageable. There are plenty of aftermarket parts for the 4Runner if you plan on keeping it and wheeling it. That is a good find and if you got a good deal on it this 4Runner will last you a long time.

Typically this type of damage is more extensive than it first appears. Hard to tell from the pics. Looks like the radiator support is twisted, radiator has a hole in the upper right corner an looks to be pushed in, therefore a new radiator, a/c condenser, a/c lines, fan, inspect the water pump. Headlight tabs look broken. Did the airbags deploy? Unfortunately these projects can nickel and dime you to complete. But definitely repairable. Good luck.

Thank you for everybody’s reply, helps a lot, and good to see I’ve come to the right place.
I’m hoping damage is not too extensive, it does have a clean title and sold by an ins co. So assuming the frame is not bent.
It is listed as run and drive also. But that’s not saying much.

    it’s a 2015 with 100k. Got it for 16k.
I pick it up in the morning, I will take the bumper off and post some pictures
    Thanks y’all

I say take it to a good shop. I took mine to Toyota dealership and they did an terrible job. They need to replace clips not reuse clips and use Toyota clips. Toyota dealership reused clips and used the wrong clips. I don’t like rattles. I would consider Toyota LED fog lights since you have the front bumper off. Replace bulbs on headlamps. Don’t use dielectric bulb grease. My two cents.

The front bumper comes off pretty easily. You could see the extent of the damage and buy TRD parts. Let a professional reassemble. That said, as a FYI to others, you can buy the front bumper painted and shipped.

Can the radiator support beam be straightened? Or just easier to replace
    Radiator pretty cheap to replace.

How bout slowin the roll for a minute and learning about the vehicle before venturing into something you clearly have no idea with whats what.

2015 did not have LED's and they are not available from Toyota. Aftermarket assemblies only and they are expensive.

If you are doing all the work, tear it all down and then ask questions once you see whats what. Folks here are happy to help, but speculation is a monster waste of time to the reality of an insurance company write off.

good suggestion, Just trying to get ahead on ordering obvious parts like a bumper etc…. But yes, will hold any other questions until I tear it down. Thanks

and no, I have no experience with Toyota 4runnners, and I have no idea what I’m doing, or what I’m getting into, but can work on cars pretty good.

I installed Toyota LED fog lights, PT413-42191 on my 2014 Trail Premium. Plug and play, black out or silver are available. My fog lights lens were chipped and looked like a 4Runner with over 225K miles. Toyota doesn’t show these as a direct replacement on a 2014 but were less expensive than the Toyota direct replacement halogen bulb assemblies. I paid about $120 for the complete pair. I’m sure the purest would disagree but these are 5th gen Toyota 4Runner LED fog lights. Just not available on a 2014. I am not a purest. I have TRD struts from a 2014 FJ Cruiser. Toyota was closing them out. ;)

I also replaced my headlamp assembly with the same Toyota parts 81130-35541 and 81170-35571. I stay away from not Toyota parts. One was replaced due to damage and I paid for the second. Looks funny with only one new. To me re lamp or replacing the bulbs is a no brainer since it is easier to do now then when assembled.

I’ll back off this thread and let the more knowledgeable members help. Just wanted to share my experiences. All good.

Don’t buy LED bulbs, bumper covers or anything until you get it disassembled and figure out of the frame is bent. That truck took a pretty hard hit low. If it was an angular hit that torqued the vehicle, or an abrupt stop like a fire hydrant or someone being stupid and jumping it (THAT never happens…) that frame, LCA, or the tabs where the LCAs attach can be bent. All of that plastic stuff up top is easy and you can figure it out. You should have gotten 100+ photos of the undercarriage. That is the important part and the hard/expensive part to fix.

That kind of hit can extended all the way to the A-pillars. So many unknowns until it is stripped down. Take emasurements front to back and side to side. If one thing is off, more than likely so are many other things.

The aluminum crush bumper should reveal the nature and severity of the hit. All is not lost yet. Looking forward to seeing pics!

Got it on The trailer, took part of the bumper cover off that was hanging, and the headlight that was a little loose.
The aluminum crushed bumper underneath the bumper cover wasn’t touched looks like. Nothing under there looks bent From what I can see, will get everything off tomorrow. Also started right up and sounds good.
Did not drive it, but the green Diff or 4 x 4, or something is blinking green…..
Here are the initial quick pics.
If you see something please let me know,
    Thanks

This is an untrained eye speaking, but nothing looks catastrophic. You may have yourself a score! But did the rear take a hit too?

Headlights are going to be expensive, unless you can patch up the tabs. Hopefully, the AC lines are still holding presure, but it looks like they are at least bent.

The 4wd light may go off when you drive it. It could be it was actuated while standing still and the axles never clicked in and locked. Dont take it out of 4wd until you drive it forward 20 feet or so, to give those front axles a chance to lock. If the light does not stop blinking, try to go into 2wd and maybe it will go out. If not, then it could be the engine was shut off right after somebody put it in 4wd and the front axles never got the signal to lock. There is a switching system that has some dead zones where the switch is between contacts, and if tge car is shut off in this no-mans land, the car wont know if it’s in 2wd or 4wd. This will need a dealer service dept visit to sort out. There is a toyota tech youtuber called “car care nut” that explains this in his 4runner 4wd system video. He’s a really good resource. Remember, it’s a part time 4wd system, no center differential, which means you should not make turns in 4wd or you’ll bind everything up. Read the manual for operation instructions.

Also, is this in Illinois? Rust looks to be very minimal, which is good.

Im assuming that you’d be the one that has to title it as salvaged since an insurance co sold it? Weird though, since it seems repairable. Good luck, hopefully you dont find any nasty surprises.

edit: what is that chain tied on to? Hopefully not the crosslink?

So I removed the bumper and salvaged the fog lights, I removed the headlights, will have to look at the tabs.
What do you guys see? I don’t see anything severely bent, there is a metal bracket I believe was holding up the bumper, looks a little crooked maybe.
I need to look at other pics to compare
How does the radiator support beam look? Is it supposed to be at a downward angle or is it bent. No holes or damage to the radiator, actually it has no leaks at all anywhere, drove it around everything works except a green flashing light for multi terrain and trac is off…..

The Core Support is definitely tweaked on the driver side, both top and bottom. The Bumper Cover Support Rail is junk and I would assume several of the brackets that support it are gone too.

It's a little late in the process, but I would have gotten an estimate from a collision shop and that would have given you all of the parts and part numbers you need.

If you need headlights, I can give you a great deal on an OEM pair with about 300 miles on them.

    That helps Mcspaz, thanks.
Just trying to get a game plan on best way to go about the repair. Order bumper headlights and straighten out the rest? Do I need to order core support?, Get new fenders, straight in the hood etc….

Yes looks like my headlight housing on one is cracked, and tabs broke off the other, not sure if I could salvage any of that or just need new ones?
What to do about the core support? Try to straighten it or replace.

As a former insurance appraiser/adjuster, I got some questions. (you keep focusing on your front but you already have $2.5K+ in repairing the quarter, and potential paint blending. So lets start at 18.5K)

    • Are you looking to return this vehicle to stock or add mods? Just trying to figure out of you are going to put on metal bumpers or buy stock parts and paint. Going metal will mean you can skip replacing some plastic parts and the absorber, absorber mount, etc.
    • How is your tailgate? Any damage? Any issues closing?
    • Drivers tail lamp, any damage? (Can buy for $99 on Ebay)
    • Rear bumper has parking sensors?
    • Does the truck start and run? If it does, does the AC system work?
    • Is it 2WD or 4WD? If it runs does it drive and have you tested the 4WD? Atrac? etc?
    • What kind of accident was it? WAs this a bumper to bumper accident where it got sandwiched and 4WD was engaged at the time? (Im thinking snow)
    • As BionicRandy already said, suspension could make or break this. If you were able to drive it, does it sound like the knuckle is bruised? (Roaring sound) Any heavy alignment issues?
Once you can answer these questions, I'll ask a few more questions that will help a little more

Great questions, thank you in advance for taking the time to review and respond, it really helps…

As long as it looks presentable, i’ll do whatever is most economical, return to stock or adding mods. One of the reasons I was focused on the bumper is to figure that out, get a C4 metal bumper to eliminate some other parts.. But it seems I would still need the stock bumper anyways for the sides and upper grill area, and paint. Whatever’s easier.

Rear of the car is fine, tailgate works great, window works, the driver side rear bumper is popping out a bit, but can be fixed, looks like a tab broke or something. The rear gray bumper cover thing is missing also. Besides that I can’t see any impact points or damage from the rear
No damage to the lights or anything else, there were no parking sensors on this trim

The truck starts right up, it sounds good and runs great, brakes are good, suspension is soft and nothing makes noise. Took it up to 30–40, steering is straight, doesn’t shake or pull at those speeds… Oil is good and pretty clean, must have been done recently. AC and Heat work good. I have a code reader, and it has zero codes.
When I put it into 4WD, the light blinks and then is solid, so I’m assuming it works, the diff lock also works… blinks red then solid..
What doesn’t work is the multi-terrain button. It’s continuously blinking green, When I push it gives me a message “multi terrain cancelled”. So it must be stuck on but not engaged? Idk. And track is off too.

I don’t know what kind of an accident, looks like the front, not enough to bend any frame, but the hood, the front and the fenders, and somehow the rear bumper a bit. Put it up on Jack’s, underneath looks good, nothing bent or hit from what I see.
But I am not a collision expert, but all the brackets and joints seem to line up evenly on all sides from underneath.
    Thanks.

That is awesome to hear. I can’t tell you about MTS as I don’t have that functionality. Have you tried MTS in 4Lo? I believe you need to be in a certain mode. MTS is computer controlled. Possibly something else (sensor or cable) is broken or cable came loose (just guessing) if you tried 4Lo.
