I’ve heard of Krown rust protection, north of the border, for a couple of decades now. Back when they sponsored shows on Speedvision/Speed Channel.

I’ve always wanted to try them with one of my newer vehicles, but never made the trek to Ontario. But over the last few years they’ve slowly opened up franchises here in Michigan. The one here in Gaylord is only an hour away.

Did your vehicle put out the same smoke screen mine did as the product burned off the exhaust system? Folks around me on the 4 lane suburban road were frantically waving at me because they thought I was on fire.

Did mine a couple months ago. Luckily a franchise about 20 min from me. Well worth it.

Back in my days as a mechanic the most dreaded job in the shop was being tasked to undercoat a new vehicle. We never had issues with post smoking as we were told to completely cover the manifolds & exhaust pipes with masking paper. Really only add a few minutes to the job but undercoating is nasty stuff - none of us liked doing it..

The main guy who does it where I go is always covered in it, I don’t understand why he wouldn’t even wear long sleeves or eye protection but that’s on him.

I just left a message for my local shop asking if they can undercoat my Limited when it's in for new wheels and tires. I hadn't thought about what a hassle and mess it might be for the tech. But I will happily pay for their trouble!

In any case, there was a thread going on around here somewhere with people discussing the effectiveness of various types of undercoats. As I recall, Fluid Film (and other brands with similar chemical makeup) was highly regarded, but application prob needs to be done every year or so. And then there was Wool Wax, which sounded just as effective but both less messy and more durable. I don't recall what was said about Krown, but do recall that most people thought the rubberized coatings were shite -- not effective and actually could trap moisture, making rust worse.

    FWIW.

Yep! Stay away from rubberized coatings. Paying $100-$160 or so for a annual rust proof job is well worth a rust free vehicle.

Turns out the Gaylord franchise is owned by the same family who owns the one in Flint.

They also said that since crossing the border has gotten to be such a pain, they are getting most of the Yoopers coming to them instead of going to Ontario.

Are they gonna drill holes in yours? I missed to do this on my '21 but will definitely be looking into just an underbody spray for my '22.

Also, does anyone who if krown or similar coatings are safe for KDSS equipped 4Runners?

Why do they spray the vehicle with soap? Do they not cover with plastic?

When I had fluid film applied they wrapped vehicle in a disposable car cover plastic, wrapped wheels, running boards etal.

Or did they just clean afterwards?

They washed it afterwards. I think your local shop is a bit more boutique, and I mean that in a good way. I’d be interested in your place if it wasn’t 3hrs away.

Gotcha. Yeah I am 3 hours south of Gaylord. If they take care of you that’s all that counts. My cousin lives in Cheboygan and is considering a 4R so I will keep your shop in mind for him if gets one. You’re lucky to live up there bud!

Yes they did. I doubt a layman would notice them. I’ve wanted to do this mainly for the boxed frame, but rear hatches on vehicles here in the rust belt are prone to early rusting.

I have to find a new job next year, and hope to be leaving the rust belt. I hate what it does to our vehicles. Plus 5 months of winter weather isn’t as fun as it use to be.

@7th District where did they drill holes at? When I had my Tacoma I had it crowned across the border but haven’t had the 4Runner over there yet. I am down in Gaylord fairly often so I might see about getting it done down there.

It will leak for a few days. Then it will leak on the really hot days. So if you value your clean driveway, beware of that for a few weeks.
Definitely keep an eye on the rubber hoses, weather strips and such. It will destroy them in time.
Make sure you do it every year or at least twice a year.
if they are indeed a good shop, they would have treated the rubber seals with some silicone (but even that will not keep the Krown at bay as it really gets into everything)

Mine had one drilled into the doors and hatch as well, not crown but a similar company that uses ‘rust stop’ as the name. I had my old Tahoe oil sprayed for the last 8 years and it didn’t effect the weather stripping or anything yet.

Had my '22 4Runner Krowned straight from the dealership after a battle with them over their useless electronic rust gismo and their threats of voiding warranty if I had it sprayed. Paying special attention to frame rustproofing. Pulling skid plates and spare tire before hand goes a long way with the rust proofers to go the extra mile on a 4Runner. Talking with the guys that actually do the work and expressing your concerns is also beneficial so are tips. Didn't need to drive it much this winter except on good days so after a complete Krown rustproofing last fall this spring I'm bringing it back in before it's annual spraying and special requesting all the frame and crossmembers be resprayed to creep over the summer and then the annual fall rustproofing should serve me well in the salt belt. That said though every time I'm under there be it oil change or tire rotation I have spray cans of the same Krown that I spray wherever I can.

Voiding a warranty due to protecting the frame. What a bunch of BS. I would like to see that in writing from Toyota

The place I go to says doing it in the fall isn’t a bad idea because the little dust and what not that sticks to the oil protects it better as well

That’s a big reason I like wool wax. It’s pretty harmless, just purified lanolin (aka sheep hair grease). I got some over spray in my eyes a bit and panicked a bit, but then I just noticed I could blink smoother and faster afterward lol:p

Seriously though, its nice to work with the stuff, so its easier to take your time with it. I’d still wear a mask just because even harmless stuff can mess with your lungs.

I touched up last years application using a brush from the half gallon I had left over. I actually wished I did that the first time, and just used the spray for inside frame rails and hard to reach spots.

It looks like a mess after you get mud and dust on it, but it will pretty much stay locked on after that. The only areas I needed to touch up were the areas that drag on mud or brush, or that get direct road spray. So just front and bottoms of LCAs and rear diff. But I kept painting in extra heavy layers wherever I felt like it since i was under there.

so far one year after application, zero signs of rust.
