I would love to get some opinions from 4Runner pros about the new redesign: pros - cons
and if I should buy an earlier model. I really want that back window that rolls down for my dogs. Anyone think they’ll do away with that like the Sequoia?

It will most likely have a 4cyl turbo version, a hybrid version and be mated to an 8 speed transmission. The redesign will probably have similar design cues to the LC like the Tundra and the Sequoia.

I hope they don't do away with the back window that rolls down. I'm surprised they go rid of it in the Sequoia, tbh.

The people that I trust on this topic seem to think the 6th gen will NOT come out later this year. They're saying it will come out around March 2024. If this is the case, you have some time to decide.

We usually find out a little more about next years model around Spring when they announce the new PRO color.......so maybe that will come to fruition this year. Last year was late, however.

The pros and cons are all speculation at this point. But it's going to come down to whether you prefer the tried and true, or the latest and greatest.

I could be wrong but after seeing Tundra Turbo issues I'm thinking turbo engine may not be reliable as N/A engine. I was very thrilled about the new Tundra and Sequoia especially because of the available hybrid option, not anymore.

If the reliability standards are down nowadays I'm thinking why I should limit my search to Toyota only, may be I will look at Tahoe turbo diesel? or Yukon turbo diesel?

According to Alex on Autos we won't know how big of a problems it is. We have to wait for data from JD Power / CR to check how big of a problem. He also says this had happen to LS500 as well.

So it could be a fairly small issue in the grand scheme of things.

It could also be a big issue......we just don't know yet.

I'm going to wait before passing judgement on all Toyota turbos.

Also, the 4Runner is most likely going to use the 2.4L Turbo from the Lexus NX.......which is already in use. It's new, but it should give us a good look on how it will perform before the 6th gen comes out.

It's a much different beast than the twin turbo 3.5L in the Tundra and Sequoia.

I see the Pros as (guessing on these, of course):

    1. Better MPG (this is almost a must - large trucks get 4-6 mpg better than a 4Runner!!)
    - Turbo 4 Cyl?; engine shut-off at full stop?; Wider transmission ratios for lower highway RPM, etc.
    - Shaving off a LOT of weight. 4Runners are very heavy for their size. Knocking off 500-1000lbs would be HUGE. Ford did this by going to the Aluminum body panels on their trucks. removed 950 lbs, and added a solid 2-3 mpg.

    2. More power, via turbo charging, etc.
    - This could potentially mean some CONs, as well... like requiring premium fuel?

    3. Potentially better design for ergonomics - more leg room in the backseat, better control layout, larger touch-screen, etc

My personal opinion on the Cons (again, guessing):

    1. More complex drivetrain = more maintenance and more failure points until it gets some time on it for fixes

    2. Different 4X4 system? (Hope not, but new transmission may very likely mean different 4WD design?

    3. A new approach to option packages that almost always benefit the manufacturer and frustrates the buyer...
    - a good example is that you may not be able to get option X without buying Package Y, which has 4 or more things you DON'T want. I am guessing this because at first there will be a need for Toyota to recoup much of it's re-design costs. So a moonroof (example) might only be available if you purchase KDSS and an upgraded sound system along with a sliding cargo deck.

If they're smart, they'll add much needed features like Front and/or Center lockers, adjustable sway-bars, power lift-gate, etc.

I would personally love to see an option for a larger fuel tank. One of the things I miss most about my former vehicle (F150) was the ability to get 800+ miles out of a single fill-up. Since moving to the 4 Runner (much smaller tank and MUCH worse MPG!!), I seem to be looking for a gas station waaaaayyy more frequently.

As many have stated before on this forum. I would wait for year 3 or 4 to jump to a completely re-designed 4Runner, just because of the well-known reliability factor of the current model. No guarantee that the new one will be any less reliable, however, the odds are that it will NOT be, until they work out bugs and kinks.

I always think it is a good idea to avoid buying a car in the first year or two of production, while the manufacturer works out all the issues. Look at what is happening with the Ford Bronco, which looks like a nice vehicle. Several quality issues and still people are willing to pay over MSRP. Patience is welcomed when it comes to new models. There will always be a better product around the corner, but I still drive my 2001 Ford 250 with the 7.3 diesel, because it is very reliable and gets the job done. It may not have all the latest bells and whistles, but I don't really need them. My 2020 4R may not be perfect, but the reliability is very high and it gets the job done. I do wish the MPGs were better, but I knew what I was getting when I bought it.

I would still be driving my 3001 as well, at least until 3002, when it will be old news then.

It doesn’t exist, that we know of, and if it does it’s the most highly guarded secret in automotive product development.

It seems that right now Toyota keeps adding random features onto the current 4runners that other competitors had 5 to 6 years ago.

I can’t imagine them making it a crossover, especially since that’s what the Highlander is already for.

What I find ironic is this board constantly raises concerns of "potential reliability issues" without actually having many of them actually post on here.

Meanwhile, Jeep/Ford/Chevy/Dodge boards are filled with actual reliability issues.

We Toyota owners are the philosophers of reliability :)

The annual car show is this weekend over here and they interviewed a rep from a local Toyota dealer and he made a point to say on the radio that the 4Runner is selling well and isn't being refreshed until 2024. Obviously this rep isn't an exec from Toyota so grain of salt. Still interesting he made a point to say that.

I am in no way trying to be dismissive or derogatory, but I wouldn’t take anything a sales rep has to say seriously.

With that said, I have no reason to disbelieve his claim, since they are focusing on other things right now and the 4Runner keeps selling.

It seems like Toyota is making minimal investment in it and getting return.

I wonder if they are trying to launch the new Tacoma and 4runner as a combined global platform, or blend the 4Runner back in with its Land Cruiser Prado sibling.

Interesting. Thanks for posting! I'm hoping we know more come spring time.

Definitely a fair comment. I rarely trust a sales rep. Not all are bad, just most ;)
