    Hi All,

i am new to this forum, so sorry if i posted this thread in the wrong discussion group. Anway, i really want to get the TRD Pro, but is wondering how difficult was it to get one and do dealers add markups pre pandemic? In other words, before the pandemic, was it difficult to get a TRD Pro? And do dealers add huge markups?

Don't know the difficulty of getting a pro right now, but for the mark ups find a dealer that doesn't charge them, and work with that dealer. I was helping my grandmother buy a new car not long ago and searched all over to find a dealer with no mark ups. They are rare but out there.

    Also welcome to the forum!

TRD Pro's are the hardest trim to come buy because Toyota produces fewer per year. ADMs tend to be very common for higher trims and TRD PRO seems to be the king of mark-ups. That being said you should be able to find an honest dealer that doesn't mark up. You may need to go out of state. I recommend starting to contact dealers ask up front if they are selling at MSRP, ask how long the wait list is and what their annual allocation is like. You may need to wait as much as 4-7 months for a TRD PRO. I got on a waiting list in October and my Pro will be here next week.

At best pay MSRP for TRD Pro. It would be dumb (imo) to pay market adjustment or any higher price.

Also read around, if you want to modify TRD Pro you might be thinking why on earth did I pay this price.

    Atleast here in CO around my house I don't see TRD Pro is highly limited availability trim. Seems normal to me;

Is it hard? Yes. Can it be done? Also yes.

You might have to broaden your search. I got mine in September 2021 in Nebraska.
Look for smaller dealers even if you have to go out of state. I saved easily $10-$15k in markups coming from California.

Based on my own search (that started late November), many/most dealers in the Western half of the US charge some level of market adjustment (or won't sell to an out-of-state buyer). Post your home state and I'm happy to share whatever info I have regarding MSRP dealers in your home state or the surrounding area.

Mountain States in CO is great but won't sell to out-of-state. If you're in CO you might consider McDonald in Greeley or Stapp in Fredrick.

No. There was no (or VERY rare) dealer markups prior to 2021... and it's not due to the pandemic, it's due to the Chip Shortage (which, could, in a round-a-bout way, be loosely related).

However, I DID find my Pro at a dealer in Virginia with NO markup. I paid MSRP. So it IS possible. But I contacted over 35 dealers in my search and only found two that did not mark up Pros. Even several who were not marking up ORPs/Sport/SR5s etc... were still marking up Pros. They're out there, but you have to pound the pavement and the keyboard/phone a lot to find them. Also, Make sure that the 'markup' is not hidden in some "required" add-on feature. Some will say "Oh we sell at MSRP, but we require that you purchase X, Y, Z options that we install" Or a maintenance package or extended warranty, or paint protection at a high price, etc.

You can. I just had to call multiple dealerships asking about otd pricing and putting deposits down. Took about 2 months to get my white 2022 TRD pro at msrp. Now they do add in the little extras like the safe, connectivity kit, etc which I didn’t really care to have, but still msrp overall.

What you see online like at auto trader, cars.com, etc is not real. It’ll show like all these TRD pros at dealerships, but everyone is pre sold. You really have to find a dealership that has allocations available to order a pro. Most smaller dealerships won’t have allocations for that trim level, so you need to find an honest dealer that will tell you if they can actually order one then next allocation date. Also, I only placed deposit at dealerships that were refundable if they didn’t get me one before I found another.

Or the public perception of the chip shortage anyway. In actuality, they built and sold more 4Runners in 2021 than they ever have. The shortage doesn't seem to have any actual impact on this particular vehicle.

I found my Pro allocation late October and it was delivered mid-December. Flew from Colorado to Tennessee and picked up at Peppers Toyota in Paris, TN at MSRP. Figure with flight, trip back, saved $14K over the local Toyota dealers. Plus actually got a good road trip. Lots of information on what dealers are MSRP and who are definitely not MSRP in the forum thread https://www.4runners.com/threads/msrp-dealerships-list-them.20301/
First page has a lot, but very good read if you are looking and wonder where to start.

I wish people would remember these dealers and not give them business again.

I don’t think they care anymore.

Pretty much when a dealership gets one of these in California they just salivate how much they can mark it up.

I thought $75,000 was too much.

Yeah, I understand the markups, as much as I hate them. But blatantly lying about what the MSRP is just seems like taking it to the next level.

HOLY COW! $82k. My grandmother just bought a 2022 Genesis G90 for cheaper.

Second that with McDonald in Greeley. No markup and they will put you on a wait list for 2 different trim levels with only one deposit.
