Should I? 2017 TRD Pro

    2017 TRD Pro?
I have an appointment this coming Monday to put a down payment on a 2017 TRD Pro. I'm interested in advice from owners. Worth it? Should I buy a used 4Runner? The adult on my shoulder says not to do it at all but the more fun person on the other shoulder says do it. I have a 2010 JGC right now that's paid off... should I just keep it? I would also spring for an SR5 with the third row seating (better for the family...). Which way should I go? Has anyone heard if the 17' TRD Off Road Premium will have 3rd row seating? I'm assuming it won't since the Trail premiums never had it.

I'm in a similar situation as I have an appointment tomorrow to put down a deposit on the '17 TRD Pro. The only other model I was considering was the TEP or new upcoming TRD OR Premium, but those and the Pro's are so close in price that it just seemed to make sense (at least that's what I told the Mrs.) to get the Pro. For me the biggest dilemma is going from a completely paid of vehicle to car payments again.

If I needed a third row of seats I think I'd have a hard time justifying the purchase...unless, you could reasonably buy the third row assembly and install yourself, though I can't imagine anyone of any age being happy back there :annoyed:

If you want disconnecting sway bars (aka KDSS), check if it's available on the 2017 TRD Pro.

I think KDSS is the only option that's on the 2016 Trail but not on the 2016 TRD Pro.

So what kind of situation would justify the KDSS on a Trail vs. a TRD Pro? I've never had the luxury before so I don't know what I'm missing out on I guess.

I agree with you... 3rd row would be alright for like 3-7 year olds but beyond that they seem worthless. I used the same justification for my wife. They are so close in price how can you not? I also justified buying a new one because if you can find a used one for sale its got 40,000 miles and its $50.00 cheaper than brand new.

In my own words...I think KDSS works to extend the travel so for those situations where the offroad terrain is not level, there's increased capability of keeping both front tires on the ground.

People have been saying it's great for highway driving as well, but I don't understand how it can make any difference.

My TE doesn't have KDSS. I do 95+% hwy driving. But I wish I had this 'cool aid'. I just like having things for those edge-case scenarios.

Maybe someone more knowledgeable can chime in.

It keeps it from body rolling on the highway. Makes it fill more solid

    Should you buy one?

I mean, it's dependent on your financial situation, needs, long term goals, etc.

    Only you can answer that.

Not a lot of buyer's remorse in the world of 5th gen 4Runners. If I were buying one all over again, I'd buy a new Pro and just leave it mostly stock.

Love the one we bought. Trying to get another one but there seems to be an issue with the release date for the 2017's. Might as well wait on the 2018's. Heard these will have a new engine with 300 hp and a six speed transmission. Hope the rumors are right.

Been absolutely loving my 2016 TRD Pro. Used TRD Pros with a year of miles on them were selling for $7k more than sticker of a new one in my area. My personal opinion is that if you are an occasional weekend warrior, that doesn't plan to do serious overlanding type 4-wheeling, get a TRD PRO. If you do plan to be a serious off-roader, that has to have a lift, get a Trail/Trail Premium. You'll spend more money building up a Trail, but you'll have more capability than a Pro

Or you can get a 4Runner now, then engine and transmission swap the new set up in later :p

Or you can get a TRD Pro, keep your suspension, and install Toytec's spacer kit for the Pro.

What it came down to for me was a few things.
#1 I knew I wanted to lift the 4Runner. I didn't want to pay for the TRD suspension to take it off.
#2 The markup was crazy at the time. The TEP came with all the same doo dads including a sunroof. Cost $7K less.
#3 In time this will become my 3rd vehicle and that's when the heavy mods come.

The Pro is fantastic, no doubt. I've seen the third row and it's for small kiddos. I have two ages seven and three and the back seat has plenty of room. What would sway me in 2017 is the Cement colored Pro. Now that color, it's hawt. All that said, my TEP is by far my favorite vehicle owned to date. I'm 41 and have changed vehicles every year now for the last decade. I just couldn't get it right. My TEP ticks all my boxes and then some. I consider it a modern dinosaur with BOF, 5spd tranny and overall looks. I was looking at brodozers (wrangler unlimiteds) but had concerns over reliability and daily livability. Now, we take my 4Runner on road trips over my wife's GLE350. Go figure.

I just ordered a 2017 TRD Pro. Should be getting it mid January. I am fairly confident that there will be NO 2018 4Runner. Existing CAFE is reason for cancellation. If the CAFE regs get changed who knows.

I thought it was Ka-Ka? (never was good with spelling.) There will be a 4Runner in 2018. My only fear is it might be a shell of it's former self. They ain't gonna give up the 4Runner heritage. Makes no business sense. They have plenty of credits with all the other hybrids.

How did you order one? I was told that it was not possible currently. Did you pic everything and hand over a deposit? I tried and was told maybe we can order in March. Somebody's lying. :fistbump:

My dealer said they would need a deposit in order to start going through the process of getting an allocation. The agreement on pricing was for whatever MSRP turns out to be. Once the new pricing scheme is available I will have to go back to finalize the paperwork. 2017 pricing and info is thought (by them) to be coming out this month. 2 other dealers in my area offered to do the same thing and none of them mentioned anything about waiting until March:woot:

Yeah when I bought my 17 trd sport Tacoma little over 3 weeks ago they gave me a hard time about getting a 16. I ordered this truck 3.5 months ago and took that long just to get it and the trd pro I couldn't get in manual at the time which was a must for me. So had to get the sport just to do that and will upgrade tons of things on it in the near future. I will say I love the way it handles on and off road!

On top of that they required a hefty deposit and a signed commitment to buy.

You don't know me and if you were standing in front of me you wouldn't have the guts to talk shit.

I don't need to order one or mess with dealers. I can get it through the distributor. I'll should have the one of the first white ones available. Confirming email said mid to late January.

What's a distributor? I worked for Lexus for 3 years and have never heard of a distributor being able to sell brand new product? To my knowledge all brand new Toyota product must go through a "pre-delivery inspection" by a certified Toyota tech which would have to be employed by a licensed dealer. Not picking a fight, just wondering how Toyota corporate would allow something like that?

My, my, my. Seem to have struck a nerve:angrygirl:. "Are we cross?" "because if we are, I just don't think I could bear it". I think you missed my point and if in fact you were able to order one (which I don't think you have) that my dealer was lying to me.

It amazes me how folks can flip shit :poking:so fast.

Just like Cement pro 402 said, "never heard of a distributor" and my family who has been in the Auto business for over 35 years has never heard of a distributor either. Now, we know your lying.

So I ordered one, a 2017 TRD PRO in Cement. The MSRP was $43,499 (which is the same as Pro's for this model year). Absolutely nothing changed between the two years. Pros are the only style they are taking orders on because they are only built one way. The dealer told me that due to the earthquake near the factory they lost a lot of production time and have cut the 2017 build lot for CONUS down to 1,500 units. According to them they will all be allocated (sold) by mid May this year.
