It’s minor until I’m out of warranty & have to fork up $3,000+ I am sure, thought the 4 runner front differential would have been better then the one in my 01 Tahoe that’s known to self destruct because of faulty tabs of some sort haha!

$2600 is what the service writer said they got reimbursed for the warranty job with parts. I’d imagine to us it would be a few hundred more.

haha!! I’ve been on these forums for a bit and I can assure you it’s not the most ridiculous comment you have read. Don’t be dramatic

We are talking about a MINOR part that is easy to fix by a driveway mechanic. If you can’t do it, that’s fine. Find someone who can.

It’s a $50k-$60k vehicle and you are worried about a $150 part?? You may be out of your league there kiddo. Time to sell it and go get back in to a 90’s civic

i haven’t seen a catastrophic failure yet. But I haven’t looked too hard into it. The noise/feel would absolutely drive me crazy though

they are replacing the entire diff. It doesn’t need to be done. Just the bearing with an aftermarket part.

good lord, you are acting like it’s the end of the world. How many cars have you owned?? I’ve had a ton of performance cars and this is crazy small compared to some of the stuff I’ve had to replace (2 cobras, 3 M3’s, WRX). I’ve been fortunate. I have also realized that there is not a single car on the planet that won’t have problems. Minor stuff like this I am completely okay with. M3’s like to actually grenade their motors when a vanos hub tab decides to drop. Let me tell you how fun that is to fix. If you are local to San Diego, you can even come to my house and we can put a new bearing in. I have no problem helping.

No one here cares how many cars you’ve owned. Some of us dropped $45,000 on a vehicle that’s touted as the most reliable only to hear a roaring bearing 10 miles into ownership. No matter how you are attempting to “spin” the situation is not right. It’s that simple.

Minor vs major is relative to one’s capabilities. A lot of forum members balk at even changing their diff, T-case, and transmission oils.

hahahaha!! Wow!! Stop being so sensitive. I even offered to help you fix the issue if you were close enough. And correct, they cost a lot, but the fix is minor all things considered. If you can’t afford to fix a car you own, you may have purchased something you shouldn’t have.

the drama with you is insane

Also. Explain to me why I should have to pay or by my own hand fix a car that I own when I have a 36,000 mile warranty and a 60,000 drive train warranty again?

I now now for certain you are speaking nonsense. Go away. Troll somewhere else.

hahahahahahaha!! I can’t understand why your life is over because the needle bearings may or may not go bad. AND, IT WILL BE COVERED FREE OF CHARGE IF YOU ARE UNDER WARRANTY!!!! Mine are fine and I put 3000+ miles on it a month. I wasn’t so lucky with my Tacoma. I just fixed it. It’s called life, good sir. Shit happens. You roll with it and fix what you need to :notsure::notsure::notsure:

It seems you are under the impression that people are telling you the correct way to deal with the problem is to do it yourself out of pocket. Replacing stuff on your own dime is not THE correct way. Toyota is responsible for making you whole.

Replacing on your own dime is just “A” way. It’s one manner to solve a problem. A few here have done it themselves because they viewed it as the most convenient, effective, and permanent way to deal with the problem.

Sometimes people can be pretty sure about why they do things, and it shows in their posts. I always like to listen to people who sound sure of themselve. I listen carefully and critically. Then i determine if their thoughts might be helpful or correct, or thoughts from a crazy person. It seems you think the “replace yourself” crowd is crazy…..

one thing I avoid as a rule, I dont try to reason with crazy people. It’s no good for anyone.

Back to the OP post..... We have the needle bearing problem on our 2020 ORP, a little bit ago, I tried explaining to 2 service writers at dealerships what was going on, they both looked at me and said something to the effect.. they've never dealt with the problem before, one even said he has never heard of the problem before. Instead of dealing with the aggravation of explaining in depth to a service writer/manager this is a common prob. on 4Runners and Tacomas, lining up a 'loaner', etc., I chose to grab the bull by the horns, order the ECGS bushing, talk to a friend with a lift, and install it during his lunch break. The $170.00 or so to order the parts, pullers and installers is well worth not having the service managers give me the run around, causing aggravation, and the potential wait for parts. That is MY choice on how to 'roll with the punches', it works for us. Still under warranty, about 9k mile mark is when it took a sh... crap

If I encounter a known problem, I research it as much as possible ahead of time, including finding and printing (or taking a screen shot) of the TSB, if one exists. I then show up at the dealership, explain the problem, and see how they react. That way if I encounter incompetent or lazy service advisors/managers I have ammunition to support my complaint.

The only TSB (as of a month ago) was up to 2019, the service manager looked up the TSB # and tipped his head like you're talking to the dog and said there's no TSB# for 2020. There fore the problem doesn't exist!? You can show some of them all the paper you want, if they have it in their head there is no prob....... You can lead a horse to water, ya. BTW- Steve, your approach is the same as mine. I do too much homework!

I had a Mazda CX5 that had the newest LED headlights. Within weeks of ownership they were clouding on the inside. Replacement cost was ~$1,500 per headlight, excluding labor. Showed them to the dealer. Dealer barely blinked- "first we've heard of it- not bad enough to do anything about it". Many months later, the CX5 forum was littered with complaints about the CX5 LED headlights clouding. Finally, there was a TSB about it. Went back to the dealership to have them look at the headlights again. This time they admitted they looked bad, but said they probably couldn't do anything about it. I then pulled the TSB out of my back pocket and gave it to them. They went out back, chatted for 10 minutes, and came back telling me they'll order new replacement headlights for my CX5.

Apparently there was a bad seal used in the manufacturing process that reacted with moisture in the headlights, causing them to get incredibly grimy in a very short period of time. A week later I had new revised headlights, and all was good.

Seeing that this needle bearing part # hasn't changed (to my knowledge?), then even though the TSB doesn't extend to the later model years yet, its a safe bet it will be adjusted at some point to include the newer models. And at least you have some reinforcement for your complaints, and dealership should have documented your complaint.

I wish I was, I am 2000+ miles away in the Western New York area though so I can not take your generous offer, Thank you though. Drive to San Diego from Los Angeles once on vacation the pacific coast highway is a beauty! I don’t mean to come out overly concerned about this issue, being the first BRAND NEW SUV I have ever purchased it just went the wrong way after all the years of saving and waiting and being patient.

Thank you for this. Reminded me that this is the internet and we are all crazy here.

the last comment I’d like to make in regards to the back and forth from last night is this.

there is a difference between saying “I feel my way is better” and (if you read the other person’s replies) “if you don’t do it my way you don’t deserve to be driving named vehicle”

this entire thread was started to discuss a known and very real issue involving a bad bearing being present in vehicles driven right off the lot. Also to discuss the steps on how to handle getting Toyota to repair under the warranty all of us paid for when we bought these vehicles.

on another and much happier note. I’m in the market for hitch mount bicycle carrier and just so damn excited about it.

Of course!! And I get being concerned. It really shouldn’t happen at all. Sucks that people are having the issues. Especially since it seems to be happening a decent amount

    None
Out of curiosity, did the original needle bearing fail at the 9k mile mark or the ECGS bushing?
