HELP WITH A SOUND ON A NEW 4RUNNER

Hmmm, usually take what service adv say with rock salt. Usually the window stickers have country of origin info. Thought mine was all japan. Need to find mine.

Hilarious. Looks like dealer beat the shit out of both steering knuckles/spindles to get both tie rods out. I assume to save the boots but the jokes on me. Both knuckles beat to shit AND both tie rod ends now leaking grease. Lmao. I’m so sick of dealerships.

Ugh. Can you feel the holes/tears? Maybe they just greased things up for reinstallation and forgot to clean up?

 

That comes from a bottom of the pit dweller who does not know what a steering knuckle tool is or even the old school pickle fork.

I am very fortunate when it comes to Toyota work I am able to do a fairly large percentage of the work myself since I do have the correct tools and skill for that and what Toyota work I would have a hard time doing because I do not have a lift however I know a Toyota master Mechanic who does have a lift at his home shop and he been working on Toys for 27 years at both Dealership and home shop So when I have something that requires special Toyota tools he can take care of that since he has access to them.

 

Well Basically that is the same thing said without the extra unnecessary cuss out,

when I started as a Toyota Mechanic I was a bottom of the "pit" dweller with the "pit" being an actual one that you went down in to Change the Oil and Filter along with Lubing what was on the chart. Once in a while when work load was high or someone called in you would get tossed a scrap or two that paid Book time and I lost my backside on the first few if you were lucky a good mechanic would show you a few things or so. As for management? Never seen them do squat ever it is up to the "kid" to ask for help and work on educating themselves in what they choose to do.

the dealers looked at it and stated they have to replace the tie rod ends. They said they didn’t need to replace the knuckles.

Should I demand they replace those knuckles? My gut tells me to do so.

 

Why would they replace the steering knuckles?

 

could be the distortion of the monkey who whacked it .. see if its damaged total ..that metal did a metal distortion. he used a big hammer .......

 

A few notes:
The front diff for the 4Runner and Tacomas are the same (and FJ Cruisers, and GX460s, and LC Prado....), and the issue can affect lifted and totally stock vehicles. I have 30k miles on my lifted 4Runner no isssues. My friend has 40k miles on his lifted 4Runner no issues. I had 10k miles on my non-lifted 4Runner (previous one) with the issue. ECGS and it was gone, even after lift.

Regarding moving the diff production to China, I'm not sure about that. But the needle bearing issue has been ongoing for a LOT longer than 2 years, and there's no way Toyota will fix it. They issued a TSB for it a while back, and it just involves replacing the entire front diff with another one, that has the same defective part. However, it's a gamble because the part doesn't go bad too often, and those who have it are more vocal.

I think the origin of this needle bearing part goes back to around 2005 in the 4th Gen 4Runners, 2nd Gen Tacomas.

 

Wanted to throw my hat in the ring on this issue. My wife and I began hearing the noise everyone on this thread is describing on the second day of owning our 22 ORP. Cyclical rubbing (whoomp, whoomp, whoomp) sound when slowing down from 35mph or so to a stop. After consulting this forum, I popped it into 4wd and sound stopped. Took it to our local dealer, who at first said "oh that's the needle bearing, we'll just order the part. No need to listen to it." They looked it up and the TSB has expired. They ended up keeping it to diagnose and discuss with Toyota. Two days later they confirmed there is a noise but are unable to identify where it's coming from. Service manager doesn't believe it's the needle bearing and doesn't feel comfortable throwing parts at it and asked if we would continue to drive it for a few weeks to see if it worsens (fair enough). So, we'll be dropping it back off in a few weeks at which time the Service Manager said he'll provide a loaner and arrange for a Toyota Rep to listen.

Overall, very disappointed this is happening, but we love the vehicle and are looking forward to it being fixed.

This and several other threads on this forum were extremely helpful in identifying this noise (I'm confident it's the needle bearing), so I wanted to contribute our current experience.

Yeah, I was following your experience closely. I cited the issues cropping up with 22s on the forum, but the service manager wasn't interested. He said he's not diagnosing issues via a forum. I said have no reason to not believe the folks reporting those issues on the forum. People have better things to do than log on and make things up.

 

I wonder if he’ll actual admit that he’s wrong or if he’ll try to play it off. Guess you’ll find out.

 

Man I'm sorry to hear that. Bruised knuckles end up roaring louder than Meatloaf's Bat Out Of Hell with time. I would definitely take it to the service manager so they know you are not an idiot and have them replace it.

They will assemble in Japan but many components come from Japan or neighboring ASEAN nations (Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, etc).

Much like a Swiss Watch... only so much of the construction has to happen in Switzerland sadly.

 

Don’t steal the magic from me. My 4runner was made from iron ore hand collected once a year from a special river in Japan, smelted in a furnace made of dry river grass collected by apprentice swordmakers, then expertly beaten into form by a traditionally trained katana swordsmith. Anything else is pure lies.

That's just the metal parts. You should see how much trouble they go through for the plastics. I heard a tale once that the plastic was injection molded using the heat of a Dragon. Can't confirm, however, as they are no Samurai left...

The breaking-in oil used for 5th Gen 4Runners is said to come from a refinery deep in the city of Midgar..... but the truth behind that is locked away in a confidential file held at Shinra, Inc.

 

WILL member ; the service writer also said there was a brand new Tacoma in for same noise and I of course asked “WTH?”

he said “about two years ago they moved the production of the differentials from the US to China. Ever since they’ve been replacing many more than usual and he wouldn’t be surprised if a recall might be coming”

so the china production creates defects on many parts. I dumped GM after 2006 . now my toyota members have a defects of the drive train parts made in china .. I have GM forums and the china electrical parts are with corrosion .. NEW GM VEHICLES .. GM DOES NOT FIX THE ELECTRICAL PARTS .. ALSO THE FUSES ARE CORRODED !

It’s disappointing that there’s such a range of responses from dealerships on this issue. Some acknowledge it and fix it, while others are either clueless or liars.

my 4runner sr5p shows all japan as country of origin for parts etc... also no issues with needle bearings with 3.5k miles.. of course now im assuming i jinxed myself...

 

I wonder if there’s a needle bearing supplier quality issue. Like with the fuel pumps where only certain production dates were affected.
My 2018 has 60K+ miles and has had no issue with it so far.

 

I have driven probably one third of my 120,000 miles in four-wheel-drive and have had no needle bearing issues. I have a diff drop. I have destroy a CV axle.

 

Just a follow up on my moms vehicle. The dealership drove it, recorded the sound, sent it to Toyota and Toyota said it was a needle bearing and now they are replacing the differential. Now they have called and its on backorder lol. No complaints from our dealership so far, they have been very nice
