Those who uses amsoil, how long do you go before the next oil change?

 

I purchase their OE formula so only 5K miles. I still would only go 5K miles with their signature blend.

 

Really? Isn't that stuff pretty expensive? I do 5K intervals due to "severe use" so buy cheap oil.

 

6.79 a quart for OE. Mobil 1 is 5.49 a quart in a 5 quart bottle or 7.97 for a single quart at Walmart.

Amsoil signature is 11.29 a quart. I may switch the GTO or both since I don't drive as much as I used to.

I'm going to have to check that out. I have a Costco membership I have not been taking advantage of nearly enough.

 

I guess that's not bad. I end up changing mine every 2-3 months, so it adds up.

Seems many going with OEM filter.

Going to be doing first change on the SR5 Prem @ 1,000 miles soon.

Do not plan on having the oil changed on either of my Runners at the dealer; even though it's included for a while. Don't trust anyone else.

I used to drive 62 miles a day for 5 days a week and yeah the oil changes came up pretty quickly.

Kirkland oil has been rated well and I'm sure the Mobil filter is good. You're not paying for the better anti drainback valves and such anymore with just the filter element.

I also didn't let the dealer change my oil and the one time they did I got a slight oil shower because they broke the housing drain tool and the broken piece held the valve open.

No need for such an early oil change but you can do as you like.

 

If using amsoil you can sign up and get discount . I use the signature series and still
Do every 5k but that’s just me . You can push it really long and from what I’ve heard they cover your engine if it fails . As long as the filter you use is oem . Other filters fall apart .

I'm averaging 5000 miles a month, and I drive a fleet vehicle to work.

 

I knew about Amsoil using a standard base. As a matter of fact they had Gale Banks in there and were showing the process including the shipment of the bas oil. I'll give it a better read when I'm at home.

Ouch! And here I am thinking I had it bad before.

 

It's my own fault. During the warmer months, it's pretty common for me to put on 500-800 miles in a weekend.

 

I'm in the same boat as you. Debating whether to have dealer service it or I do it myself. I’m at 1300 miles. I’m leaning towards just doing it myself, but then I risk losing my 20yr/200k limited power train warranty if I do. Sigh, decisions decisions.

 

LMAO! I work for a small lubricant company, we don't even make motor oil...no reason to compete with a commodity company the size of Exxon-Mobil, etc. Instead we focus on high end, specialized stuff. We sell grease that can go for over 1k/lb, and we have products on the Mars Rover.

In my 4R I use either OEM or NAPA Gold filters, depends if I have time to get the OEM. I usually use Pennzoil Platinum, Mobil-1, Valvoline synthetic...really whichever one is on the best rollback price and has matching 1qt sizes in stock. Last time was M1 for that reason. I did try the GTMO once, because the extra moly...the motor was still noisy AF, so I won't waste the time/money on that again.

 

Mobil 1 synthetic and OEM filter. Use it in my Tacoma and both 4Runners.

 

Now im curious. What is the $1k/ pound grease used for?
Also what special ingredients are in the mars rover's gears, bearings etc?

 

Mobil 1 filter, Mobil 1 Extended performance OW-20, replace at 5K or last water crossing, whichever comes first.

 

Mostly aerospace applications. I'm not a chemist, I'm not sure of what the additive package is in the space grease. A lot of our stuff is manufactured to super tight specs, so a lot of the cost is actually wrapped up in extensive lab testing and precision manufacturing processes. It's kind of interesting. Actually, some of the equipment we use to manufacture grease looks like the same stuff that you would find in an industrial bakery. For some of the super small batch stuff, they use equipment that literally looks like a KitchenAid mixer you'd have on your counter at home.

 

There’s a lot of moving parts on a rover, probably all need some kind of lube. Materials and equipment for space applications have very stringent requirements and undergo extensive analysis, extreme testing, and numerous reviews before being approved for use. In the case of grease it would have to be chemically stable, physically stable, and maintain its viscosity range in the Martian environment where the air temperature can range from approximately -140 degrees Fahrenheit at night to roughly +70 degrees Fahrenheit in the afternoon. The internal equipment bay temperature where the batteries and electronics are enclosed is controlled to something like -40° F to +100° F but I wouldn’t expect much grease to be used there.

But before reaching Mars that grease also has to stay in place during the vibration environment during launch and the vacuum of space with no outgassing or chemical changes for many months before reaching Mars.

All these requirements learned from decades of spaceflight experience. No wonder the grease costs $1000 per pound.

 

Sound like some peoples 4runners came with the LFA engine. On mine I think olive oil would work just fine

The 20w watery oil is pretty much olive oil so why not. Shit just use baby oil and get excellent mileage

 

I’ve been doing the same. Hard to beat $29 for 12 quarts and zero issues so far.

It really depends on your OCI. I use fresh olive oil whenever I cook, so I started buying in bulk.

I hear Amsoil is working on a fully synthetic olive oil, though.
