I suspect that what he is saying is that his dealership does not have any more 2022's allocated with KDSS on them, and that right now, Toyota is not taking any special orders to add it to existing allocations.

That's possible but I think salespeople tend to give the impression that they have insider knowledge (which to be fair, they probably do, but don't always share it honestly and openly) and they'll try hard to convince you that it isn't even worth looking elsewhere, so you might as well just take what you can get (from them of course).

They do come with KDSS, I was just checking availability here in Central Florida and there were several. One was a Lunar Rock ORP too. I was tempted to trade mine in on it. Lol

Definitely agree that the salespeople are slimy most of the time and most will do anything they can to get you to buy what they have on the lot. But these days nobody has anything on the lot to push at you, and what they have on the way is mostly already spoken for too. So they have very little incentive to deceive you about what they can and can't do. I have heard from quite a few different sources, several of them not salespeople that Toyota is not allowing any special orders outside of allocations, and that they will not add KDSS as an allocation revision order. I get the impression that it either causes issues with the assembly line trying to add it on or they can't get the parts or chips they need to make more.

Make sure the vehicle is actually available before you get your hopes up on that. Most of the vehicles showing up on dealer websites or places like Cars.com are ones that are in transit to the dealer, but most are already spoken for by somebody who has put a deposit down on it. When we bought ours a few months ago, I called regarding one that was showing on the dealer website, and was told that every 22 ORP in their allocation for most of the next 2 months was spoken for. I put a deposit down in early September on a vehicle that wasn't expected to clear the port until late October.

Assuming they are still coming off the assembly line and actually still available with KDSS, I think a lot of it comes down to finding a dealer willing to go out of their way to help you find what you want. When I first started shopping for an ORP with KDSS, the first dealership I went to basically showed me their incoming allocation and said I could pick one of those but didn't seem terribly interested in trying to find what I wanted. The next dealer was willing to do the work and I put a deposit down but after not getting much information from them about what they've done and where we were in the process, I tried a third dealer. The third dealership was very open and explained the process to me in detail (which I appreciated since I had already done my homework on the process), so I ended up with two deposits down. As luck would have it, both of the latter dealerships ended up getting what I wanted allocated to them (through dealer trade, I believe) within days of each other, so I chose the more pleasant one to work with and got my deposit back from the other one (with a bit of resistance).

Anyway, TL;DR, it seems that KDSS is somewhat of a rarity in Minnesota but there were two dealers that were able to find (almost) exactly what I wanted with KDSS. It did come with a moonroof, which I was indifferent about and would have preferred to save a few bucks to go without, but ultimately it ticks all the boxes and will be ready for me to pick up on Monday. I think some dealers are lazy since regardless of what they get, they'll probably have it sold before it arrives anyway.

How do you know your salesman is lying?

    His lips are moving.

My 2022 TRD Off-road premium came with KDSS last week. That being said, I had it on reserve since early December.

Another thing you can do is try and find the build sheets on either dealer websites, or sometimes autotrader will have them. I had my heart set on KDSS, but ended up not getting it. My 4Runner is 99% a mall crawler so I wanted it for on-road ride. It seemed like all the KDSS models were going to the East Coast (most likely the larger dealerships with more allocations). I am in Indiana, but lucked out and my local dealer got allocated exactly what I wanted except no KDSS. About 3-4 weeks to arrival they sent me the build sheet as well. Sometimes finding a good salesman and dealer to work with is helpful also! I thought the had part was paying $1,000 for stupid add-ons, like the cargo cover and running boards!

kdss may be a rare feature but it is far from being discontinued. salespeople will say whatever to get a sale out of you, even if it means fabricating stuff to make whatever vehicle they are receiving seem more enticing to you.

Here in Hawaii all offroads are equipped with Kdss. They don’t offer any off roads without. I wish I could have gotten mine without.

Because the distributor that bring them in orders them that way. I wish I could have gotten one without. Hawaii sells crazy amounts of 4runners

I purchased my 21 Venture in December of '20. The sales person I was working with told me that the 4Runner would be a discontinued model within two years. I liked the dealership so I just politely asked to speak with the sales manager and asked for a new sales person to help me with the rest of my purchase.
