Amsoil oil and Toyota filters. Any off the shelf oil of the correct viscosity works fine though.

    Wix and Walmart oil usually.

I do 5K changes as recommended (based on my use of the 4Runner), so no need for fancy oil.

A buddy of mine argued that AMSOIL cant be one of the best oils out there. His reasoning is that Mobil and the others are bigger an have more money. Im like you need to do your homework.:hattip:

Have used Mobile 1 and Toyota oil.
Can't find Toyota oil anywhere right now (Calif.) except Amazon.
Reluctant to buy from Amazon. Want 100% authentic.
Going with Valveoline this oil change and OEM filter.

I had castrol reps out at my shop last month . Telling me why won’t you put castrol I. The bmws that you service . I told him it’s not full synthetic . And he said North America goes on tier system tier 3 being 75% or more synthetic they can label it full synthetic .

and I responded to him with that’s why we have issues with these imported cars . You need to use imported oil that is FULL synthetic .

now on to our Toyotas . You can put anything you like . Keep in mind most oils out there are refined from used oil and not 100% full synthetic . Do you need the expensive stuff , no . But I use it because I know too much .

less you know may be better jmho

Right now Valvoline full synthetic because it was on sale along with a Wix filter. Guys these aren't HP race engines. Any off the shelf brand name full synthetic will do fine. Don't over pay.

So, the label is a lie? I'm pretty sure they wouldn't legally be able to market it as full synthetic if it wasn't.

Edit: if it's a certain percentage that is allowed to be labeled "full synthetic", which oils are actually full synthetic?

FWIW, I used Mobil 1 on my previous 4runner until I traded it in at 257K miles. It still sounded like a new motor at idle. It's probably still on the road somewhere, pushing 300K.

Amsoil is great if you're going to use a longer service interval. But, many of use should be changing every 5K based on the manual. It's not worth the extra money for shorter (5K) intervals.

I have no doubt that Amsoil is great stuff. I just wouldn't bother unless I were doing longer intervals.

I used nothing but Walmart oil on my ex's TC, and it's been fine. I was using it on the 4runner as well, but I bought Pennzoil last time because they were out of Supertech.
