Lights all around. IVD front standard travel
Try stopping and put the car in neutral then turn the dial and see if that works

if not maybe moving forward and back a little bit sometimes helps knock the actuator lose to shift back to 2wd

Can you not turn the knob? Or is it not disengaging

If it's not disengaging, try putting it back in 4wd, drive forward or back a few feet, and try again.

If it's not turning, are you pushing it in while you turn? I thought there was some trick to the rotary switch.

Also, another possibility is to leave it in 4wd, park, shut off, and restart. A guy had his 4lo stick on an outing last summer. It turned out to be some sort of electronic brain fart.

4L or 4H? Different steps have to be taken depending on which one.

You probably know this but don’t push down on knob when turning from 4H to 2wd.

    Won't engage, or won't disengage?

That's weird that the knob won't turn. I thought it would turn but just beep if it's not disengaging.

I know this sounds silly, but are you pushing the button in on the nob while turning?

Yeah if the knob won't physically turn, it's you. There's no electronic lockout on it.

It's not me. The knob will turn to 4L but not back to 2H. 4wd will not disengage

This. Make sure to understand how the knob works. If the knob is not turning to 2wd, we cant say just yet the the 4wd is not disengaging. The 4wd system wont be told to do anything until the knob turns first

So far, if I understand correctly, the problem the OP is describing is a problem with just being able to operate the knob.

OP, you cannot go from 4L to 2H just by turning the knob. There are additional steps involved in getting from 4L to 4H. Once in 4H, you can shift from 4H to 2H easily, but not by skipping the steps to get into 4H.

As has been asked, are you stuck in 4L or 4H, either, none? No one is quite sure what exactly you're saying.

stuck in H4. my vehicle is a 2022 4runner base model, didn't pay for bells and whistles. It worked just fine last week, switching between 4H, 4L, and 2H. It has the knob that turns, not the stick. I know how to use it, so not user error...I've successfully used it before.

do you think you could just post a 10 second video of the issue? that probably is the easiest way to identify what's going on rather than trying to guess over texts.

Are you able to turn the knob from 4h to 2wd? If you are operating the knob correctly and it wont turn, Id call the dealer. They might need to flat-bed it to there so they can fix the knob.

I think the issue is that he physically cannot turn the knob. That's how I'm reading it at least.

The shift in and out of 4wd should be on the move and not while turning. I let off the throttle a little to make the shift easier on the system even with my lever equipped Runner. Are you getting flashing lights 4wd lights?

Seems to me the problem the original post had was being unfamiliar with how to operate the knob, like when to push down while turning knob, and when not to push down while turning knob.

I have a lever operated one, so can’t be sure. I would recommend carefully reading that section of the manual to make sure you are doing it right.
