Has Toyota used the 4.0 L V6 in any other vehicle? If not, then boy 4Runner is really special to them. Because even the Landcruiser didn't get a dedicated engine. The 3.5 L V6 is in God knows how many Toyota and Lexus vehicles.

No, the 2nd gen had a 4.0L very similar to the 4Runner's, except it was single VVT-i. The 4Runner also shares an identical 4.0L with FJ cruisers made after 2010, while the 2009 and earlier get the Tacoma's 4.0

It was introduced in the Tacoma’s in 2005. Ended in 2015. And FJ as well.

Is the 3.5 in Tacoma and Avalon identical?

Yup, single VVT-I version was in the Taco in '05 - '15.

Also, the 4.0 (1GR) was in some Tundras, some Landcruisers, the Fortuner, FJ, GX400, and the Hilux Surf (/4Runner). :D

I think the Tacoma is the only version with the Fake Atkinson cycle, though.

Sure it is. It is the US market version of the Hilux Surf! And, shares a platform with the Landcruiser Prado.

So, basically, we drive a Hilux. And a Landcruiser. Lucky us! :)

The 4.0L is still used in other platforms around the world, but for the US the 4Runner is it for current production.

The rest of the world get orgasms when they see Tundra that only is available here. Hilux is badass but Tundra is more badass. Lucky us!

Watch the Tundra part where it is saving people from California fires

The Lotus Evora uses a 3.5L Toyota engine, Lotus used a 4.0 L, but since their teaming up with Cosworth, it's hard to tell what they will do. My daughter had a Lotus Evora with a 3.5L, Feeling this engine compared to the 3.5L in our then Tacoma, you would never know it was a Toyota engine! BIG tuning difference!

Pinstripes, lots of em. Plus a couple dents.
Our 2021 Toyota Highlander has 3.5L engine with 295 HP and 263 torques.
Compared to the Taco 3.5L that has 275 HP & 265 torques.

The reason being less the 4.0 is "special" and more Toyota is just dragging its feet updating the vehicle.

I liked it better in the Tacoma , the oil filter was up top and screwed on … super easy compared to the canister

The engine we have is more powerful.

It would be completely gutless given the extra weight of the fifth generation.

Never realized that 4runner HP numbers were higher , any one know if the 4.0 come from japan with full synthetic oil ? The land cruisers do just wondering if the 4runner would especially with more HP .

The engine can run with synthetic or non-synthetic, because I don’t think they made the recommendation to full synthetic until early on, maybe 2012 or 2013.

The newer ones would have to, since 0w 20 only comes in full synthetic. Although, in other markets it might come with 5w 20.

Wasn't the 4 0 in the Taco tuned for more low-end torque though? I would give up some HP for some torque down low. I don't think I've ever gotten all the HP out of my 4.0, I don't think it's ever been up to 5,600 RPM haha.

I have heard that, but I don't see why they wouldn't have given the 4Runner the same or better.

I didn't redline mine until it had a few thousand miles one it. I was passing someone on the way to Florida. It moves pretty good for a brick, once you get into the higher RPM's.

I know what you're saying though. I still think gearing is a bigger issue than power. But, my '03 was pretty nice with the 4.7.
