I think I paid around $85 for the oil change at around 1000miles.

:bananadance:I plan to do mine every 5,000 miles. I don’t believe in 10,000 mile oil changes. Having 2 vehicles anyways I don’t but many on either. So once a year or every 5,000 to me. I have a Tahoe for the winter beater here in NY. Trying to keep the 22 clean

I don't blame your hesitancy to change oil at 10k miles. Our service fleet of 7 only runs synthetic oil and oil/filter changes are at 10k km or 6k miles and we rotate them out of service at around 120k miles. Haven't lost an engine in over 30 yrs

Our service trucks do a lot of downtown city driving, kinda hard (er) on vehicles I'd think

5000 mile changes are not wasteful if you drive in severe conditions. Pretty much anywhere there is snow, or if you do off roading, qualifies you as severe use.

That’s how I think of it, I tow occasionally & live in New York where we enjoy all 4 seasons. Also a lot of stop and go on the commute to work on a bad day.

This guy is a Toyota Master tech and says change at the first 1000 miles, then every 5000 miles after that. He sees high mileage Toyotas every day. I am going with his recommendations.

If you're doing 5k then no need for synthetic oil

I don't doubt he sees a bunch of high mileage Toyota's every day.

How many of those people do you think did a 1,000 mile oil change and 5,000 thereafter?

My guess is not very many.

When I worked at a dealer it was not uncommon to see high mileage cars come in for service. in the end, it is cheap insurance so I am sticking with it. I would rather spend the extra than push my luck. I have a 03 honda with 200,000 miles and I did the early oil change on it and it is running fine with no issues other than routine maintenance. I also have had Saturns that went over 350,000 and again just routine maintenance. So far it has worked for me and I feel he has a point.

The Car Care Nut is a master tech at a dealership I assume? Is he sending the oil away for analysis? I did not watch the linked video so please excuse me if he is. The only way for you to find out what interval best suits your driving and your particular engine is to send a few samples into Blackstone. People spend thousands of dollars on useless modifications and premature maintenance to their vehicles but will not spend $30 for very useful information.

He is. I will more than likely hit the time interval than millage interval on my oil changes but it is cheap peace of mind.

if you are interested in keeping your oil clean/filter performance you might consider a by pass filter system....I ran one on my 2015 Tacoma and was very pleased with the results If you are a anti Amsoil person I wud assume there are other brands, the filter is rated for 60K miles...I monitored it for breakthru and saw none at 52K, then sold the truck...TW did a good write up on filters and performance that is good reading

I am on the fence about how to often to change mine. I got my 4R new in June of 2021 and have 600 miles on the clock. It’s not my primary vehicle. It’s in storage for winter now.

I am thinking of getting it changed in April 2022 now before I get my boat out of storage.

I will probably drive it up to 1,500 miles per year tops is what I would guess now.

Yeah that was my thought. I got fluid filmed in Sept and it’s never seen rain in on my watch anyway. I have it covered with a battery tender. Winter tears up vehicles with all the salt. I have seen too many rusty 4Rs here in MI so I am trying to keep this 20 years as nice weather vehicle only

Same here for western New York, I brought it home and it sat until it got its rust stop oil treatment. I kept my 01 Tahoe for the bad winter days, mine as well let that one take the hit.

It sucks that you need to retire your 4Runners for the winter. They really excel driving in snow.

I don’t plan to for it’s whole life, but for the amount of money I spent & being my first brand new vehicle I just wanna ‘postpone’ rust issues by keeping it clean for a bit. We had 16 inches of show fall last Thursday and I really wanted to have fun in it.

With that schedule, I'd just change it once a year.

    That's me though.

I change my 4 runner oil change 7500 miles . change the oil 0-20wt dexos2 mobil syn or toyota oil sn plus spec. oil over the 12 months 7500 miles the oil stick is so clear hard to see the oil level ..drops 1/5 qt...
Toyota 2017 changed the oil to a sn plus dexos 2 spec synthetic .. 10K miles .
my 2000 silverado 5.3L , change the oil around 7-10K miles 5-30wt mobil synthetic . the old oil looks very good and my engine 180K miles drops the oil 1/3 qt..no engine issues and I use wix/pure one filters........

I changed my 4runner odometer 3K miles .. inspected all the fluids.. I had to replace the rear diff oil and greased the drive shafts ....

engine oil looked like new. filter was with no issues clean.. the rear diff oil was gray and had particles ...when the rear diff oil changed it the oil looks like new 40K miles.

well many owners post that the oil changes make a mess on free new oil changes .. some mechanic monkeys put the wrong filter in it ....forum members..

If I let my Tahoe with the 5.3L go 7-10K I would run out of oil in it. At 3 k mines pretty black & in that mile frame it takes about 1.5 to 2 quarts. I think my pan leaks a very little though, enough to see on drain plug & filter after a while but not enough to leave drops in the drive way.

what tahoe model year ? GM 2007 and newer 5.3L engines have oil issues .....2006 and old 5.3L engines last about 350K miles . the 1990's 5.7 engines also last 350K miles...
