Just got a new 22 limited 4runner the other day. We had one years ago that my wife loved and has always regretted getting rid of. The old one however was a V8 and had tons of power. This new one is a bit lacking. I ordered the pedal commander already, should be here later this week. Any other mods recommended that will give this thing a bit more, without affecting warranty?

It seems the pedal commander is pretty trouble free, but Ive seen some people here end up with Check engine lights after installing them. In those situations I would definitely not assume it is warranty friendly. For sure they would pin the blame on it and send you on your way.

Same goes for a magnesson supercharger. If you blow your engine after installing one, zero chance toyota would warranty the engine.

Im not saying they wouldn't be safe or reliable, but any problems that can be associated to a particular mod will affect that part/systems warranty.

I was really hoping for better options. Would be nice if they would just bring the V8 back.

I would do the sprint booster. Better set up and easy to hide. I use sport setting and it has great throttle response. We bought 3 of them. No problems. Well worth 240. Easy to install and can be turned on and off easy

It is only 12 degrees here this morning, and I didn't notice any increase in performance. I may do a cai, but was looking for something that added a bit more than what they will. I am use to running chipped diesels that you can get 40 - 100 hp gains cheap and easy.

I’m just kidding. You’re on the right track. A pedal commander makes a complete difference. Unless you want to drop 6-8k for a supercharger, you’ll have to get use to it. I came from a 5.7L tundra and it was a bit of a shock.

In theory they could claim anything from the engine to the transmission, transfer case, differentials, and drivetrain could be affected by blasting more power through it than was intended.

Also if it throws a belt or some metal chunks into the engine, I don’t think that will be covered either.

Looks like if you have the Magnusun installed by certified tech, then Magnusun will cover your initial 3 year/36,000 mile warranty. The $8k that would cost though is a bit steep.

That’s better than nothing and shows they are a responsible company and trust their own product. That said, the original powertrain warranty is 5years/60k, so one would need to accept the possibility of losing some coverage if something broke.

    You dropped your "sarcasm" tag.

But to be clear, a Cold Air Intake will also be an issue for a Check Engine Light related to the engine. The dealer will ask you to swap it back to stock. Same with the supercharger. Same with Electrical mods. Same with a pedal commander.

Same with literally every mod if it relates in anyway to your problem.

The Magnuson Warranty is crap if you actually read it.

Normal power train warranty is what, 5 year / 60,000 miles?

For the Magnuson Limited Powertrain Warranty to go into effect the vehicle has to be under 3 year 36,000 miles for the warranty. The reason is because their warranty expires 3 years from the original in service date or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. Meaning if you put the supercharger on at 30,000 miles, Magnuson will give you a 6,000 miles of powertrain warranty - Toyota is not going to warranty a powertrain failure with a supercharger added so all in all if you supercharge it you’re losing 2 years and 24,000 miles of powertrain warranty.

Their trans coverage is capped at $2500, rear axle coverage is capped at $1500, you have to have all factory recommended maintenances performed, and their list of things that void the warranty are:

“ABUSE RELATED TO OVERLOADING, OVERDRIVING, PCM RECALIBRATION, MISUSE, NEGLIGENCE, ROAD CONDITIONS, UNAPPROVED TIRE SIZE AND/OR TIRE COMPOUND, AND OTHER NON MAGNUSON PRODUCTS, LLC. APPROVED MODIFICATIONS. MAGNUSON PRODUCTS, LLC. APPROVED MODIFICATIONS ARE LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING: EXHAUST MODIFICATIONS BEYOND THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER (REFERRED TO AS CAT-BACK OR POST CAT); WHEEL AND TIRE MODIFICATIONS THAT ARE WITHIN FIFTEEN PERCENT (15%) OF OEM OR FACTORY EQUIPPED SIZE (MODIFIED TIRES ARE ONLY ALLOWABLE IF THEY ARE ONE HUNDRED PERCENT (100%) STREET COMPOUND).

ANY DAMAGES TO THE VEHICLE AND/OR MAGNUSON PRODUCTS, LLC SUPERCHARGER SYSTEM DURING THE INSTALLATION PROCEDURE, PARTICIPATING IN OR PREPARTION OF THE VEHICLE FOR OFF-ROAD AND/OR RACING (ON A TRACK OR OTHERWISE), FIRES, FLOOD, RIOTS, ACTS OF WAR OR TERRORISM, THEFT, VANDALISM, NATURAL DISASTERS, PHYSICAL DAMAGE, CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGE AND ACTS OF GOD ARE NOT COVERED.“

If you install headers - warranty is void. If the engine fails while off-roading - warranty is void. Snorkel - warranty is void. Big tires - warranty is void. Pedal Commander - warranty is void. Oh, and if you don’t get them documentation of the install within 30 days of the install... you guessed it - warranty is void.

If you read the fine print, the whole thing is kind of a joke.

It is, that’s why I would recommend installing it on a vehicle you don’t care that much about anymore, but it’s still in good enough shape that the investment will pay off, then be mechanically inclined enough to know what can go wrong with a supercharger.

They had some problems with the pulley, but the new versions appear to have resolved it.

I think ultimately, there’s very little a supercharger that is producing low boost can do to permanently destroy a car or truck, and if the thing craps out, hopefully you can still remove it and it doesn’t blast any metal particulates into your intake.

while I agree that the 4Runner is SEVERELY underpowered (and I came from a 2.7L Ecoboost 4 Cylinder in a F150 - it was WAAAAY more powerful than this V6!), I would be concerned with a Supercharger adding too much for some of the other driveline components. Transmission, Transfer Case, Diffs, etc. I don't know how well they would handle a large boost of torque and HP.

A lot of the stuff is shared with the GX which makes more horsepower and the supercharger doesn’t produce that much critical peak horsepower, so on paper it should probably be fine.

Most times you would be well within the range of the original specifications, anyway.

After having a Tacoma since 2011, and a 4Runner since 2016 I think I actually came up with the solution for the lack of power...

I went and bought a car with not one, but two turbos. Now I could care less how slow the 4Runner is haha

Did the exact same thing, twice, and even though it is 300hp down on either, the 4Runner is still more fun

Pedal Commander has been a game changer for me. If I ever need warranty work I’ll just take it off. It literally took 15 minutes to install. Longer to set up the app really. Love it.

Just get a supercharger and a tune so it doesn't pull timing.

It doesn't turn the truck into a race car and its laughable compared to my goat but it make the truck quick.

I installed the Pedal Commander on my 2022, however I removed it right away. After I installed, I took it for a test drive, it made the transmission shift kind of sporadic at low speed, so I removed it and I return it.
