Shifting out of 4wd

Im getting a boom clunk shifting out of 4wd?

 

My 2005 will make a little “boom” if under load when shifting out. If I do it while coasting a little or even in reverse it doesn’t do it. One of the things I live with given it’s 17 years old, yours is 24 years old, be easy on the old girl.

 

You shouldn't.

All joints, bushings, etc good underneath?

 

if there’s tension on the driveline you’ll get a little sound, guess it depends on what he’s describing

 

I have a 97, you shouldn't get a boom clunk at all. Diff fluid been changed recently?

 

My 97 limited did the same thing. I just started shifting into neutral before disengaging 4wd...

 

Has always happened with me and no worse for the wear. This includes my 1st gen, my 3rd gen and my 5th gen. I would not worry about it!

 

Both my Tacoma and 4R have a mechanical sounds when going in and out of 4x4.

I wouldn’t say a boom but mechanical clicks and a clunk.

 

Exactly...it only makes sense that there would be a transition noise. No problem!
Get over it. All three of my Runners have always made a noise when shifting from 2wd to 4wd and the reverse.

 

If you take the tension off the driveline it’ll be much smoother. I do it on my 2005 as it has 300k on it and I don’t need anything adding more stress on it than necessary. The smoothest shift out of 4wd happens when slowly rolling in reverse, comes out smooth like butter!
