overlanding/mild offroading in PA?

Is there anyone on here doing anything like this in PA? I am near Harrisburg. not a fan of beating on my cars but would like to get off the beaten path a bit and use the 4x4.

 

Look on facebook for Overland groups in PA. Also Toyota 4x4 groups.
I'm a member of multiple Overland groups in Missouri and Arkansas. There are lots of folks that want to hit the trails in those groups. I started in the Overland groups and then joined an Off Road club that is open to all types of "street legal" 4x4 vehicles. I like off roading more than I like camping.

Also you really ought to get a GPS mapping system ap for your smart phone.
I use 2, Gaia GPS which is a paid subscription and Avenza which is free.

In either one you will want to download the Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) map for your local national forest.
PA has the Allegheny NF.

Those maps will show you legal Forest Service Roads which is where all the fun is!!!

You might create a facebook account with a nom de guerre (fake name). I'm seeing a lot of people doing that. Or get the significant other / wife / etc to add your name to their account.

 

In Harrisburg you are not far from the Bald Eagle State Forest just west on 322 toward Penn State. Or down 81 to Michaux SF. There are plenty of SF roads, including many that are not maintained. I spend time there on my Dual Sport, but I see lots of Overland equipped vehicles taking advantage of camping sites. These are not off road trails through verdant forest, but roads a 2wd would/should not try. I've not been as far as the Allegheny National Forest, so I can't offer a comparison. I've also run some awesome 4wd roads in Sproul SF and Tiadaghton SF. As a caution, many of these areas offer zero cell service, so I wouldn't count on cell phone apps for guidance. Ok for downloaded maps, just can't use them for finding your way out of some place.

I like Purple Lizard maps for some old school, and reliable guidance.

and bald eagle was mentioned above. there is a central pa overland fb group, but i am not sure if they are on instagram or other social channels. there is also a northeast 4x4 group that i think is on facebook and instagram. check out 4runner adventures on instagram and northeast toyota overlanders as well
