Buy a 2022 4Runner or wait until 6th gen?

Currently have a 2020 Tacoma TRD Pro and the back seat isn’t big enough for the rear facing baby seat.

Should I buy a 2022 4Runner and trade it in in 1-2 years when the next gen comes out or wait? From what I’ve read the 6th gen should be arriving at dealers at the end of 2022 or early 2023. If I put a deposit in now maybe I’d be one of the first to get one? I’m just nervous with all the shortages/delays that it may end up being 2 years until they’re available.

I have a dealer that can get me a 4Runner without any markups but I don’t wanna pay $2,000 in tax plus $2,000 in depreciation just to buy another car in 1-2 years.

You should be able to get more than what you paid for the Taco and if you can get the 4runner for MSRP or less, buy it and then hold on for a few years or more if you don't like the redesign.

 

I do not believe we will see a 6th gen by early 2023.... or even late 2023. I doubt they would take a deposit this far out. there is a thread on here somewhere where someone in the know claims it won't be here until 2024 at the earliest, and I can believe it. the 4runner still sells well, and they can barely get the new tundra's out of the factory.

it also sounds like you need something now, if you can't get your kid in your Tacoma. I had a 2018 Tacoma before my 4runner, and can say that the 4runner is a far superior vehicle. I'd buy the 2022 and see how it goes. you may love it and want to keep it, but if not, cost of ownership is almost nothing with these things.

also, most on here aren't going to suggest waiting for the 6th gen regardless of your situation, and are actually getting into 5th gen's themselves now, to avoid what they think the 6th gen will be. small turbo engines, etc.

 

My only concern is with gas prices going up and me having a longer commute I don’t really want a 5th gen as a daily driver. If the 6th gen is anything like the Tundra and has a more efficient turbo engine with more gears I would opt for that as soon as it comes out and roll the dice on reliability. Plus I like new stuff and the 5th gen is so outdated.

I hope you are not serious. You just asked the question and answered it yourself. If the gas prices are your concern, you should not be on this forum. 6th gen or not, a full size suv is not your cup of tea.
Maybe the rav4 prime. Maybe a sedan.

If you worried about gas prices a redone 4R isn't going to save you. Buy a Hybrid Highlander.

 

This. If I needed to prioritize fuel economy, I’d do the RAV4 Prime in a heartbeat. I’m hunting one now for a friend trying to replace her Jeep Compass.

I feel like the estimates for the Hybrid 4Runner weren’t much better than 25-28mpg, which might not make it worth your wait anyway.

 

this. I bought a 2020 Tacoma last year as a 1 kid parent. Wife decided we couldn’t have an only child and I knew the Tacoma wasn’t gonna work with 2 kids in car seats. Got almost 5 grand more than I bought it for, got a 2021 SR5P and haven’t looked back. I’m 6’3” and can sit comfortably in the back.

As othes have stated if mpg is a concern look elsewhere…although the I do get better mpg than the taco now, the highlander or rav4 are gonna put it to shame there. Wife has a 2020 rav and we’ll all be able to fit in there comfortably while averaging 25 or so.

I'm leasing my current 4R because I want to see what the 6th looks like. I can always buy the '22 after the lease. I don't think the 6th gen will be out for awhile so I have plenty of time.

 

I would kill for a 25-28mpg 4R. That would be the perfect vehicle for my needs.

 

I bought the 2022. No ragratz. It’s the best looking SUV. I think it’s one of those body styles that will be a classic way way down the road like the old bronco.

 

I whole-heartedly agree. I just wonder what we’ll have to sacrifice for that. If it’s reliability or durability, or even ease of being able to do my own maintenance without constant visits to the dealer, I’m not sure I’d consider it worth it for me. Although an extra 200 miles per tank is enticing.

 

I would get a 5th gen…. You can’t hold your breath on when the 6th gen will be released and I personally try to avoid first remodels with kinks, etc. I like the broncos but won’t get one for a couple years because of the newness and all the inevitable problems. The gas mileage is worth the awesome toughness of the 4Runner for me!

 

I absolutely love 4Runners myself for the looks, functionality and reliability. that said, it's a platform that rarely updates over the years and sucks gas so quick you can almost hear it. doesn't sound like what you're after. The Highlander is an amazing vehicle that might fit your needs better.

 

They could easily nuke it and combine it with the GX into one model for the US.

 

Long ago I had stock 97 Cherokee 4.0L HO I think i got 11 / 12 mpg.!!
I was getting 38 mpg mostly hwy on a 2020 Hybrid Highlander for work.
They supplied a vehicle , so I sold that Nice SUV because cant off road with it or pull with it hence the 4RNR
That Offroading is sure fun $$$$$

 

We got one earlier this year, we are enjoying it, getting more than 30 miles on about 2 bucks of electricity, and when we do need gas, I think it’s 35 plus, but truly don’t know as we haven’t used enough gas to care.

 

The only insight I can offer is that I just upgraded from a Tacoma and could not be happier with the 4Runner. The Tacoma was great, truly, but the 4Runner is just better for our needs (dogs, camping, off roading). Don't really pay attention to mpg's, but the 4Runner is definitely more efficient, despite running on a 3" lift and 33's while the Tacoma was stock.....which is surprising.

Agree with the others, the 6th gen 4Runner will likely not be here for another couple years, and even then, it will be a 1st year model. It will be interesting to see if they retain the off road capability/beefiness of the current generation, or if it becomes a glorified Highlander (no offense to Highlanders). Either way, I'm keeping my 5th gen.

 

You could do what I did. Bought a 21 pro as a placeholder to trade in for the 23 ONLY if I really like it.

 

i had same conundrum and after i saw what they were doing to the Tundra's motor (belief is that 4Runner will also have similiar powerplant) and looking at what some in the auto industry were thinking that the new 4Runner would look like (like a cross between a hummer h3 and an FJ) i decided on getting the 2022 4Runner with a tried and true drivetrain and the current body...

and yes, never buy a 1st year (re) model of a vehicle... too many new non proven things they work out in the first couple of years with those.. (electrical, drivetrain, body fitment issues etc..) ...

 

If you want efficiency and newer tech, why are you even looking at a 4Runner? Serious question. If you want or need the capability then great, otherwise something else might fit your needs better.

 

Or do like myself have a daily car and use the 4R for recreation. I am not a good example since I have a few cars but sometimes having an extra makes sense if you can afford it.

In the winter time I put certain vehicles in storage rate for insurance also. It covers me for storms/theft/ fire etal for less than $40 month (obviously not insured if I drove during that time)

 

Yeah you definitely need to wait for the 6th Gen. It might be 2-3 years though. I'm definitely not picking a 4R if I don't want it as a daily. Way too expensive for that. To me the 5th is not outdated. I had a new Outback with all the fancy tech and it was the most annoying vehicle to drive. 5th would be plenty if it was my last vehicle. It won't be, but I would be fine with the amount of tech.

 

Toyota is more interested in the comments in this thread than making the sixth generation an off-road vehicle.

There are lots of shitty crossovers on the market already, buy one of those instead of demanding Toyota change the 4runner into one.

The Highlander already exists.
