2021 First oil change question

I unscrewed the oil pan bolt and there is a blue circular gasket(?) around the hole still on the oil pan. I tried knocking it off with a wrench but it is not moving. Do I just need some more force or is this supposed to be there? I am planning on installing a Fumoto oil drain valve and it has a gasket already. I cant believe this gasket would go up against the one that seems stuck on my oil pan.

 

It needs to come off. Take a flat screw driver and give it a little pop. They can seize on there occasionally.

 

I just changed my oil for the first time and experienced the same thing. I personally wouldn’t use anything metal that might gouge the oil pan. I used a plastic scraper, gave it a little tap, and it popped right off like Squeaky said.

 

I use a pick to get the crush washer off.

 

Ok. I did exactly what everyone said. Took a hard plastic scraper and used a little more force. It popped right off. So my second question is this: I did this oil change today at 5,300 mi. which is obviously ahead of the Toyota maintenance schedule. Should I perform the scheduled maintenance reset procedure on the dash computer?

 

I would but up to you. I log every change I do on my 4Runner so the maintenance light is just an added bonus.

Ain't we suppose to do oil changes with dealership for 3yr/36K miles to keep the warranty? I don't know what is the process. Asked the question to learn.

Double nope. That said if you screw up and forget to tighten the drain bolt and it all drains out, it’s on you.

Also, isnt the drivetrain warranty 5yrs/60,000 miles?

 

I milked that stuck gasket for like 50,000 miles on my Sienna then I finally put a new one on. My 18 Highlander still has the factory washer, as does the 4runner. They dont leak if torqued correctly. Im so lazy lol

 

I'm like 90% sure I'm not even running the gasket!

 

5K oil interval is where we are, and the Fumoto went on right away, you'll like it for ease of draining oil.

 

so Just curious does anyone capture a sample and send it out for testing? I am a retired facilities manager and for 30+years always tested the oil on all rotating equipment as well as my truck..its great at the first oil change as you will have the history of ur engine, with many data points...wear metal , TAN,base numbers, fuel dilution etc.... It will also tell you based on real data when you really need to change oil/filter, rather then a number established by the manufacture .....

Many people use Blackstone for oil analyses.

Lots of people use Blackstone for an analysis ($30) at every oil change. They love tracking and discussing their results. But I’ve never heard anyone say that it’s a good thing they did it because they caught a problem in time before it caused damage. Maybe in some old domestic cars it’s useful, and of course industrial machinery and big diesels. But who’s ever had oil analysis find a problem in a 4Runner?

 

Any suggestions for the oil type for the 4 runner . should be 0-20 and which brand is good . and how long time to change the oil . and any one can help with check list main maintenance for the 2020 .SR5

I’ve reused the gasket before, but have since bought a package of them for when I forget to order prior to changing the oil.

 

Change your oil every 1000 miles with Toyota Genuine Filters and Toyota Genuine 0w/20.....can not be too safe with these finicky engines.

Seriously Matt, these engines are anything but "finicky". And while I'm in agreement that oil changes are important, 1k mile intervals is not only impractical but needlessly expensive as well. Hell, I'd be replacing my oil at every 3 tanks of gas.

I installed a remote oil filter kit which includes a honking big (compared to OEM) old-style oil filter. I run synthetic Amsoil Signature Series 0W/20 in late fall/winter/early spring and 20W50 the rest of the time. Just me and definitely not the be-all-to-end-all formula, but it works for me.

AND NO: The Fram filter was used for fitment only. I heard about how bad they really are.
