Toyota dealer put sticker saying next oil change is 5k, but Toyota corp says 10k?

I have been changing the oil in my vehicles since I first owned my first car. I am not really disputing oil change intervals, I am more so calling to action what is the actual mileage of my free oil changes?

I bought my 2022 4Runner TRD Pro and was told I get the free maintenance and that consists of oil changes every 10k or 1 year. In my head, I laughed and knew I would just do a personal oil change at 5k (or wait until 1 year if close).

I noticed Toyota when they inspected my new vehicle put an oil change reminder sticker top left that says 5k.

What is the reason for the difference in mileage? Does the Toyota maintenance plan intend for you to pocket every other oil change?

The reason is so the dealer can make more money out of you. My oil looks good until about 7.5K so that's when I have it changed.

Oh I am with you on that assumption.

I daily a BMW E92 M3. Oil is like maple syrup, 10w-60 basically race car oil. The engines are finicky so for peace of mind I would send out my oil to get analyzed in a lab and I do changes at 7k and they always I had way more life left in the oil.

The 4runner is my daily but I have a low mileage Camaro SS that gets an annual oil change even if I've only driven it 1000 miles since the last one. Probably throwing money away but makes me feel better.

Nice! I am a huge 5th gen fan. Mine is a '13, 6speed, mostly stock except I had the gears changed to 3:91's. Owned it since new and still in love with it. The 6th gens just don't do it for me.

Ah nice. I had to go look at my spreadsheet on the car to remember what I did to mine.

It was basically stock as well. It was a '13 2SS automatic. I had a Borla ATAK axle back exhaust, the 1LE front splitter, 1LE Alcantara steering wheel, 1le Alcantara gear shifter, 1LE front and rear sway bars, 1LE strut tower brace, and a Range AFM disable device. It basically had every 1LE part except suspension.

Oil change interval is 10k miles. Service intervals, such as topping off fluids and rotating tires, is 5k miles. For simplicity's sake, I just take mine in every 10k for all of it. Just had my 8th oil change at 81k on my 2019. BTW, this is the first vehicle I've ever owned where I didn't do the oil changes - yet. I eventually plan to start doing them, but the first two free ones made me lazy lol.

Sounds awesome. Post a pic if you get a chance. I've done a few cosmetic things but one of the best mods I did recently was to put a heavy weight shift knob on from Raceseng. Blew me away how much it improved shift feel. Never imagined a shift knob could do that.

Heavy use would warrant 5k, not 10.

Depends how and where you drive.

They did that with mine for the 1st two year of free service. They rotate tires every 5k. I only went every 10

I had a 99 SS for six months, before I took out 100 feet of guardrail with it at 100+mph. I got a 00 WS6 T/A after that. All I managed was an off-road Y pipe before it was totaled. But man, that thing was a ringer at that time, it seems to pull a bit harder than a lot of the guys cars in the f body club.

The WS6 got a lot more attention though. I've considered a new SS but I prefer the backcountry these days and have 2 kids. Although I do miss rowing through the gears and power slides for days, throttle steering....mmmmmmmm.

As Scotty likes to say, “Oil is cheap. Engines are not.” Personally, I would do it every 5-6k miles.

Thats what I do. At 10K have the oil changed, tire rotation, and multi-point check done. I use to do all this myself. And still can. But I don't want to jack the 4R up on all four corners just to rotate the tires. Much easier (and safer!) to let the dealer do it while it's on the rack. And do other inspections as needed. I don't mind working on top of the vehicle. Still do my own detailing. But at 71 I don't work under the vehicle as often anymore. Can't really explain it till you reach that age. Old bones or something I guess. LOL
