That's the thing. Anyone who really wants a V8 4Runner can and likely would buy a GX. Aside from aesthetics, it literally is a V8 4Runner.

And, anyone who wants to go really fast in a clumsy ass, BOF SUV can buy a Jeep.

Just curious how a big engine 4Runner would cost as much as the LC300 based new LX?

I'm sure it would be comparable to a GX. Or, more if they put in the 5.0.

I'm just saying Toyota doesn't do these things because they know they won't sell enough to make it worth their time.

Again, there's always the GX if you want a V8.

I’d buy one if it looked like the JDM model.

Realistically, let's say they did it and they charged between 55 and $65,000. I can guarantee you that 99 out of 100 people would rather have a GX at that price. Toyota knows that. Why would anyone pay the same price for a less refined version of the same vehicle?

A V8 4runner at GX prices would present a predicament for toyota if everyone thought like you and me. That GX is sooo ugly, it’s revolting really.

Toyota may be afraid nobody would buy the GX if a 4runner version was available.

    Lol!

I do agree that they're a little goony looking. Honestly, I did consider a used GX and the looks were definitely a factor in me pursuing a 4runner instead.

But, they sell plenty. You can't see the grill while you're driving it. :D

I think that's definitely a factor. But, the GX is probably much more refined.

I could put up with the looks but 15 MPG with premium fuel makes it an expensive daily driver.

Ouch! My '03 V8 4Runner got 17, which I thought was damn good for how I drove it! :burnrubber:

Are you pretty loaded down? Or cruising at higher speed (75+)?

Mine sucks if I'm in a hurry.

The market does not decide CAFE standards the Gov. sets. Free markets we do not have. More powerful does not mean more speed nessasirily, not sure why you keep bringing it up as I never used the word 'speed'. But better believe I would buy one with a V8!! Heck, I would probably trade to get thicker sheet metal and thicker paint at this point (CAFEs fault). Car manufactures are doing everything they can to reduce weight for 'fuel economy' including lighter weight turbo 4s....There is no choice when the Gov dictates.

Right. But, other manufacturers make ridiculously overpowered novelty vehicles in spite of CAFE regulations. The point is that Toyota doesn't do these things because they know they wouldn't sell. Or, they would take sales from the GX which they don't want.

I keep bringing up speed because you keep bringing up horsepower. What exactly do you want this extra 100 horsepower for? Towing? Because it won't help with towing. Torque would help with towing.

Turbo 4s also help in countries like China where taxes/fees are determined by engine displacement.

Im one of those weirdos that has been perfectly happy with V6 engines. Although this one redlines much lower than my QX.

Never needed a V8. Think turbo 4s are over-stressed in most new vehicles

    Ymmv

I hope for 20 years out of this 4Runner. We’ll see how things look then.

Seriously? One needs a reason to want something now? I want Gov out of the car industry and I want another 100Hp in the current selling 4Runners. I've expressed this throughout. Nothing hidden in what I've said. I want freedom of choice for everyone. You, me, manufacturers, those people over there...everyone.

    Who decides something is ridiculous?

How is this determined? Phrased differently, How do you know this to be an absolutely truthful statement.

No. I asked why you wanted another hundred horsepower to try to understand why you want another 100 horsepower. Simple question. Do you want faster acceleration? Or do you want better Towing (which more torque would help with)? Or do you just want another 100 horsepower because 'Murica?

My point was that Cafe is not keeping other manufacturers from putting more powerful engines into smaller Vehicles.

I don't. But, Toyota builds what they think the market wants or needs. They don't give a shit what a couple of guys on some Forum think. They care about making money. If they thought they would make money by putting a 400 horsepower v8 in a 4Runner, then that's probably what they would do.

My whole point here is that Toyota could put more powerful engines in some of their vehicles like they do with a few Lexus models. But, they know that they can sell vehicles with modest power and efficiency and probably make more money.

I don't think it's Cafe that is keeping them from doing it. I think it is their choice.

Some things aren’t worth stressing about. Most car manufacturers are moving toward EVs, hybrids, lighter weight, smaller engines, twin turbos, CVTs, etc. to get better fuel economy in the US and Canada as well as electronic and other comfort gizmos that the average consumer wants. In other countries the cars are tailored to their needs, like diesels and tiny cars. This is based on govt regulations (pollution) and consumer demand, which in most cases is better fuel economy and cheaper cost.

Of course other vehicles are produced that don’t get great gas mileage for the niche consumers like bigger vehicles, pickups, luxury cars, higher powered sports cars etc. But that is generally a small segment of their sales, with some exceptions like big pickups in the US. At this point in time it’s not worth pissin’ n moanin’ about it. No manufacture cares nor will they change their plans. We’re gonna get what we get.

“You can’t always git what you want..,”

I’m gonna keep my 5th for about 20 years and try out the new generation of EVs/hybrids from Toyota for in-town cars after they’ve matured a little more. And not worry about it.

Indeed. We will keep it but glad we got the warranty on it. Already replaced the head unit, the Starlink is pretty, but pretty bad too.

    ABSOLUTLY!!!

I don't see why anyone would take issue with that. Get Gov. out of the car business and see what a true free market decides. I never said it would happen. I said I would love to see it. My perspective is from having grown up in the age of Muscle Cars. Sure Gov was involved but not to the extent it is now, not by a long shot.

I'm not a fan of CAFE, either. I'm all for trying to make cars more environmentally friendly, but not to the point that it doesn't make sense anymore (like auto start/stop).

What I've been trying to say is that Toyota doesn't put a V8 in the 4Runner because they don't want to. It doesn't need to be fast, and there are plenty of other options for people who want a more powerful SUV.

We all chose the 4Runner. The Government didn't make us buy them. And, when you look at specs, the 4Runner is downright FAST compared to 20 years ago. It's not underpowered, it's just geared poorly.

    It's not the government's fault we don't have a V8 option. It's Toyota's.

Just a side note: despite all of this government interference you're so upset about, the muscle cars of today are much more powerful that they were back in the 60's and 70's.

The current 4runner 0-60 times compares very favorably to a Ferrari 308 from 1980. Magnum PI would just barely be able to outrun us.
