Hello peeps currently a 2nd Gen Tacoma owner here. In about three years I’ll be handing my keys over to my son who is currently 13. I’m considering a 4 Runner. What the cargo space like in one of these? Hopefully the 4.0L is still around by then, lol. Thanks.

I’m sure the 1.8 liter turbo 4cyl hybrid will be fine in the next gen 4runner. :p

As far as space…if you drop the back seat, I guess close to a Tacoma? Just covered. And carpeted.

As @McSpazatron mentioned, it's pretty similar in space to a 5.5' bed with the seats down. As far as width, you can slide a 4' wide piece of plywood in above the wheel wells.

Even with the seats folded up, there's a pretty good amount of space. The floor space is around 40" × 40" between the wheel wells, and a bit wider above and behind them. You can pile stuff about 2' hight before it start to get in your way for looking out the back window.

In three years, we should be onto the 6th gen, but we've been expecting it for awhile already, so who knows. I can 100% guarantee that the 4.0 will NOT be available in the 6th gen. You're looking at a turbo 4, or hybrid. Both options will probably have better power than the 4.0.

If you get a 5th gen, you'll notice that the dual VVT-I 4.0 will run circles around the single VVT-I version in the Taco. In stock form, my 4Runner was way more peppy than my '15 Tacoma.

    Welcome to the forum!

Pinstripes, lots of em. Plus a couple dents.
A 2"x4"x8' will fit inside the 4runner with room to spare.
