Throttle Response Controllers ?

Consider the Banks Pedal Monster. I installed one and I like it better than the Pedal Commander (which I now have for sale for a good price in the classified section, BTW). It has 3 big advantages:

1) Interface options: it is Bluetooth like the other units, but it can also be mated with a physical gauge with buttons
2) OBD2 interface: instead of tapping the 5V signal on the pedal, it runs off the 12v OBD port. It can monitor for faults and will bypass everything to stock if it detects a problem.
3) Reverse detection: no modified acceleration in reverse, which can be a bit disconcerting

 

Interesting concept. If I understand this correctly they wanted to tap into the OBD port to attempt failure detection by reading the typical pedal failure codes. Sounds good. But the drawback is that the port is now dedicated to the throttle controller, you can’t concurrently use another OBD dongle in there. So they advertise it as an advantage stating that it draws power from the more reliable OBD +12V versus the +5V at the pedal connector. That pedal +5V comes from the ECM, it’s just as reliable as any other power source.

That’s marketing for you.

But it looks like a really well thought out product with a decent 1 year warranty. Keep us posted with your long term experience with it.

 

What's the main complaint of throttle-response units? A check engine light that results in "limp mode". If this unit can proactively prevent this condition then that's a huge plus. Having it occupy the OBD port is a non-issue from my perspective.

Was going to get the Hikeit on the sale price, but the website is sketchy. I kept getting a warning about a potential Security threat from accessing their website. Got in today without the warning, but it's not letting me choose vehicle.

I think I'm going to go with the Industry9 one instead. It looks like the same exact thing, but at least the website works.

I have it sitting between the steering wheel and the dash.

When going off road, I turn it off. Visiting family in Grand Haven Michigan this last weekend, found it's best to turn it off in snow and ice as well.

 

I have them on my 4R and Tundra.

I’ve been in the modified truck / car / toy scene for a few decades now, have spent many tens of thousands on various products that gave varying levels of improvement (including some that made things worse), and……

Without a doubt the Pedal Commander is the best $300’ish product I have ever experienced in terms of real world daily driving improvement.

NO, it doesn’t give you more power, but it delivers your existing power in a much improved and responsive customized manner that is not replicable by simply pressing your foot farther / faster.

 

The jerkiness of the throttle in the "sport" modes felt like it could add unnecessary strain on the transmission. The engagement felt rushed and clunky. I could be wrong but thought better be safe.

 

I ordered the Hikeit on the Black Friday deal, and it came in this past Saturday. I installed it on Sunday, and after living with it for a few days, I have to say I really like it.

I haven't messed around with the modes yet, I just put it in auto because I like set in forget type things, and I'm going to run it this tank of gas to see how it affects my mileage. I'm trying to drive normal, which is typically with a light foot and I'm curious as to see if this affects it at all. I'm about half a tank down so far, and there doesn't seem to be a decrease.

I like the auto feature, it lets me drive like a grandma what should help me maintain my reasonably good fuel economy, however when I want to merge onto the highway or pass, it seems snappier. It gives you more of the throttle in the upper end of the pedal travel, and it seems like downshifts come on quicker and a little more seamlessly. I don't notice them being any more harsh than stock, or jerky in any way.

So far I consider it money well spent.

 

I would go with sprint booster. The wife and I have 2 4runners. I ended up with sprint booster after going back and forth. I called both companies and sprint booster had better customer service and clean installation. I ended up getting 3 total. One for a friend who loves it. Makes throttle response much better and feels like more power. There are so many levels for adjustment also. I keep ours on sport 9 which is perfect. I tried race settings but too jumpy for daily driving.
Pedal commander is nice but sprint is a better setup and easier to hide when going to dealership for service for warranty work .

 

I bought the Shiftpower 4.0 Throttle Response Controller because it includes the security feature of killing the throttle for theft prevention. And the Throttle response adjustment is just a plus at that point to me

 

As does the Sprint Booster.

 

Very cool, i did not know that. Though the shiftpower is $100 less but lets see maybe i get what I pay for

 

Good luck. It seems throttle controller companies are springing up daily...I hadn't heard of some of these mentioned, including Shiftpower.

I've had the SB installed for a year (install 12/6/2020), and it has worked flawlessly since. Very happy with my choice. I also like the small profile of the controller. Mine sits on one of the switch blanks on the dash to the left of the steering wheel. I can see it, but rarely notice it there.
