Is there a TSB for the needle bearing on 2021's?

I think mine is having an issue with it. I want to go to the dealer with at least a little ammo. Lol :)

Welcome from Wisconsin! From what I've gathered on the forum it's..... T-SB-0012-19. That number was/is for 2019. The reason I say this is because that's the 'return fire' that whoever is behind the service department desk may use. Some service depts. say "I guess we've never heard of such a problem before." We have needle bearing symptoms with our 2020, 10K miles on it, after a "free" 10K oil change, needless to say I was NOT impressed at all with the service dept. We are getting the ECGS bushing and going to install it ourselves in the shop. Best of luck to you though, maybe your service dept. is OK... I hope, let us know how it turns out.

There is a procedure to test it. While travelling in a straight line at around 30 MPH, engage 4WD and see if the noise disappears. If it does, and it comes back after switching back to 2WD, then it's likely your needle bearing.

I'm not sure if the TSB extends to '21 or not. :notsure:

!!! Thank you for the TSB, the dealer inspected it and found it needs a new diff. I told them I thought it was a tire or wheel issue but then handed them the TSB. I said “maybe it’s this”

Where is your dealer as mine isn't biting on the needle bearing issue! They're standing by the '19 TSB and that is doesn't pertain to '22's. I think I need to find a new dealer.

Mine is in Holland, MI. Nice people. I have a camry and 4 runner from there. I am keeping my fingers crossed all goes well after this. I had 2 fords in the past it they were nothing but trouble. Im hoping these 2 vehicles change that. I fully understand things happen. So for now i just have to be optimistic, which is hard for me hahah

Yes it's a 2022 SR5 Premium. It was any speed after 35 mph or so, like a moaning/humming that would hum, then stop, then hum, then stop, etc.....it would go away if I put it in 4wd.

Is there something else that you think might be the source of this vibration? I’m essentially positive that is the source for my noise/vibration, except I havent taken it to a dealer yet because it comes and goes. And I put in a lift at 14,000 miles, so they will probably blame it on that.

I heard the noise on my 21 in the first 100mile drive from the dealer. I dont even have to shift mine into 4wd to make it go away, just some pressure on the 4wd lever is enough to make it go away. Planning on the ecgs plain bearing, but please share if you have other ideas.

Tires. Is the vibration front only? Or?. Why would your 20, or 21, or 22 be any different than someone's 16, or 18?
Edit- and, a noise? What noise? Driving it off the lot?? ...heard a noise, doing what. And when?
If the bearing was shot, why does it come and go...???
Second edit- the "needle bearing issue" is supposed to be after a lift, so they say... was yours lifted from the lot?.?? Oem rigs,.. not so much.

I agree with you. Except that with it having <1k mile one would hope it wouldn't see any issues this soon.

I will add that the needle bearing issue is common across years. A similar design affects Tacomas in the same way (they have their own TSB.

Have you read the related TSB yet? I dont have a link to the TSB handy, but the description and how to test for the needle bearing issue is what led me to believe it is the bearing (light cyclical groan/vibration at non-highway speeds, goes away in 4wd ).

In my case: Pretty sure it’s not tires. Not dependent on tire position, or tire brand/models (I switched out to KO2s at around 3k miles).

Plenty of reports here of people without a lift have this noise. I went 14,000 miles on stock suspension. My lift did not change the sound or how often it happens in any notable way. I will add, my absolute CV angle is pretty much the same after the lift, just reversed. Before the lift, I had a negative angle, now its positive (for lack of a better term).

I think there might be various reasons it comes and goes. When Im more heavily loaded (full tank of gas, or loaded up for camping), I seem to hear it less. Probably because the CV angle gets reduced somewhat (spitballing on that guess). Outside temp affect clearances a bit, so that is probably why you tend to hear more people having the “noise” happen more consistently in winter weather.

The “put it in 4wd” test is kind of the gold standard test though. From what I have read, the front driver axle always spins, even in 2wd. In 2wd it is spun by the wheel. In 4wd, the CV is loaded/powered by the diff. Once there is a load applied through the diff, the slack on the CV on the diff side is taken up and the noise goes a away. The natural slack is significant btw..,go under the 4runner, grab the CV at the diff side, and youll be able to move it up and down in the hole. In 2wd, the source of the sound is basically the cv chattering in a resonant manner on the needle bearing….plenty of clearance in there for it to happen.

4 runner is back, and all is well. no more noise or floor / wheel vibes in the front driver area. from what i have read it may be an on going issue. for now tho its all set. brakes, tires, alignment, and everything else was good. just the diff replaced. Instead of doing the bearing they just do the diff now. Holland Crown Toyota was awesome.

It's more noticeable in colder weather

So who says? Mine was bad from the beginning. I had the diff replaced before my lift (April 2020, ~28K miles). Now, I'm at about 68K, so almost 40K after lift, and it hasn't returned.... Yet. o_O

dude its happening on 22's with those that are not all wheel drive like the limited. its happening on my moms brand new car. everything is pointing to the needle bearing. multiple people having this issue are saying same thing. so maybe this is something you dont know about. It does not just happen after a lift. now, saying that, it may not be the needle bearing. but it is a problem alot are having with brand new vehicles

It seems so ridiculous that they didn't just redesign the front differential at some point. There must be enough vehicles that don't get the issue that Toyota just decided it was cheaper to fix them as they went. But, I know newer ones are having the issue pretty much right off the showroom floor sometimes. Mine did.

If ECGS has a documented fix w a solid bushing and Limiteds dont have this problem because they have the solid bushing, why the hell has corporate continued to put needle bearings in these diffs? SMDH

2022 TRd Pro 4WD. Got same problem and a “4WD test” made it silent instantly. Guess they haven’t fixed it in the factory yet. Heard it on my test drive with 1 mile on vehicle. Was faint and sounded more like a “surge before a shift” and the dealership told me it’s the computer learning to shift per my driving style. I knew better when I heard that but i went against my gut gave her the benefit of the doubt. Lol. I dropped it off for them to look at early in morning. Let’s see if they can hear a problem I now hear driving all around the city I live in.

I just picked up my 2022 SR5 Premium and the dealership is about 100mi from my house. About 20 miles into the ride home, the noise started and it's still prevalent. I had a 2nd gen and a 4th gen 4R , never had an issue, this one is awesome, minus "the issue". The build date on mine was 12/21, so its pretty fresh so they are still leaving Japan with the problem. Frustrating... SMH
