Well, 4Hi doesn't require you going into neutral at all or anything.

You can go 4Hi to 2 and back while in Drive.

    Are you in 4Lo?

I have a '98 LTD. Mine seemed to do that a couple times. What I did was just work the shifter from drive to reverse a few times, and of course, make sure the 4WD button is dis-engaged. The light will not go off by simply putting it in neutral. Make sure it rolls in both directions. You should hear a clunk if it comes out of 4WD.

Shouldn't even clunk; may want to grease your zerk fittings and check your u joints and carrier bearing.

Again, since the OP mentioned Neutral, there's a possibility that he's referring to 4Lo.

So 4Lo, Neutral on the transmission, move transfer case out of 4Lo to 4Hi position, then transmission back to Drive.

Then push 4WD button and done (if applicable), or move J shift lever to 2 from 4Hi.

Is this an automatic or manual? On the 1997 automatic you have the shift lever and next to it the transfer shift lever. The transfer shift lever has positions of H2, H4, N & L4. Having moved the transfer shift lever from either H4 or L4 to H2, it takes a few seconds for the vehicle to switch out of 4WD and I believe the vehicle needs to be in motion. In the question it seems to imply that when the transfer shift lever is on neutral, the light stays on? Under this scenario do the wheels still receive power? (They should not.) What happens to the light when the transfer shift lever is in H2?

    Happy Thanksgiving all.

After you have verified that "mechanically" it's not in 4wd, check the switch for the indicator light, maybe it went bad. This is after the advice posted above.

None. Bone Stock. EXCEPT: Brushguard, tow hitch, both welded to the frame. It's good to have friends and a fully equipped garage!
Sometimes the gearing involved in making the truck function in 4WD gets tensioned up, and won't disengage from 4WD. It takes backing up about 3 meters (10 ft), in a straight line, to loosen the tension from the gearing off. Then put the transmission in neutral, and the transfer case lever up to H2, and the button to OFF. Then just drive away normally. It should unlock.
Please note the use of the word "SHOULD"!

Just another suggestion that may...MAY...be of some use.
