Hi guys. I’m new here and appreciate any suggestions you can give me.

I live in Tucson, AZ and have a 2016 4Runner SR5 Limited. I bought it one year old with 25k miles. It now has 140k, and it’s been solid as can be for me.

It’s a 2WD unfortunately, so I knew from the start I would never take it off road. And with that in mind, I’ve always left it bone stock. Stick rims, no lift, no suspension, nothing.

Well… recently my mechanic told me I’ve got a motor oil leak and a coolant leak starting, along with a few other mileage-related issues that need addressing. It put me in a little bit of a funk, just the idea of acknowledging that my baby is starting to get older.

So as one does in a mid-life crisis, I decided I want to soup her up a bit! Not necessarily performance-wise. I’m not gonna pretend it’s a 4WD or try to trick anyone into thinking that.

But I see other 4runners on the road and I get a little bit jealous. They sit higher, they have the black rims with the bigger off-road tires. It’s just a meaner look. And since my 4Runner has been so… boring for the first 140k miles, I figure why not at least improve her aesthetics for the second half of her life.

All that said, I have no clue where to begin. The tires I have on currently are completely shot and ready to be replaced. (Which is why I figured this would be a good time to make a change).

What size wheels and tires do you guys recommend for that bigger, sitting higher, meaner look? Do I need to lift it or get a leveling kit? If so, do I need to do that before or after I put the new wheels and tires on?

I know I’m a nerd! I’m pretty sure I’m going to get laughed at on this forum but that’s OK. I know you guys know 1000x more than I do about this so I just appreciate any advice anyone can give. Thanks so much.

I’ll include some pics of my aging, bone-stock baby.

Decide how big of a lift you want, if you want one at all, and then you can start choosing tires that can fill in the added wheel well space. There’s tons of great build threads and pictures on here that should point you in the right direction of how you want to mod yours. Having a set budget could help narrow down the selection of mods as well.

Check out Bilstein, Eibach, Ironman 4X4, Dobinson lift kits. Depends on how much $$$$ you really want to spend. If you don't want to break the bank, definitely look at those brands. You can also always go the CornFed Spacer lift route.

Bought my 2020 4Runner brand new from Toyota with Bilstein 5100s on the front and rear. Came with 285/70/17 Nitto Ridge Grapplers and 17 inch Fuel Krank Rims. I loved the stance of the 4Runner, but decided to upgrade my suspension to a Stage 3 Radflo Suspension Kit because I love hitting the desert and trails.

285/70/17 tires are probably the most popular tire size on this forum. I like 17 inch rims compared to 16 inch or 18 inch. Just my own opinion.

I am sure you can find some amazing Black Friday deals going on right now!

Good Luck with whatever you decide to get. I am sure your Runner will look amazing!

Are flat-billed hats still a thing? That would go with monster stickers lol.

To OP, you could do a spacer lift, but depending on budget, you could justify a proper suspension lift, especially since the stock shocks have a fair amount of use on them.

That thing has an oil AND a coolant leak already?

Get some Bilstein 5100's or some Eibach adjustable shocks. You'll have the option to lift the front either 0", 0.85", 1.75", or 2.5". Get either a spacer or a lift coil for the rear.

    Get some 275/70/17 A/T tires.

Get some 17x8" wheels with a 0 or -10 offset.

    Drive it.

P.S. You can still offroad with a 2wd.
