Clearly this market is nuts. I've been looking for a '22 TRD Pro and the most of the dealers that have one are asking a markup of $10k and up. I must have called about 25 dealers in the NJ/PA/DE/VA area.

I found one dealer asking a $5k markup. Should I pull the trigger on that? Or just continue to wait and maybe something will come up at MSRP?

Depends on if you can afford and how bad you really want it. I personally would not pay a penny over MSRP and I don’t even like to do that on new vehicles. With that said, it is a crazy market and the chances of them getting it is very good if not 100%.

Thanks, I'll check out that thread.

I also don't like the idea of paying a penny over MSRP. I can afford it, but it's a matter of principle. I'm rationalizing it since it seems all the dealers are doing these markups, and I'd like to buy the possibly last generation of the 4R before the redesign.

Not sure I'll do it though, since it's hard for me to stomach the idea of feeding into these greedy dealers' tactics.

@daedalus Toyota dealers in Virginia , Maryland will start getting vehicles in December , and they will good after March , any dealer ask you more price you should report TOYOTA and you should never pay more , this is a worse time to buy new or old car .
personally i do not recommend anyone to buy 4runner in 2021 or 2022 because its pretty outdated, and still Toyota did not fix the major issue that Toyota has its drive shaft vibration .

Thanks for the replies. I will keep waiting and looking. I wouldn't feel great about paying over MSRP.

If folks refuse to pay over MSRP, eventually dealers will have to sell at MSRP, but there are folks that will buy anyways.

We really are voting with our dollars here. Paying over MSRP perpetuates the cycle. Regardless, someone will ALWAYS pay. I just hope this trend of even paying full MSRP will not be here to stay. At the end of the day though it's basic supply and demand at play. We need to remember the dealers only charging MSRP in these times and give them all of our business in the future!

Agreed, we are voting with our dollars. I've purchased many cars over the years and have never even paid full MSRP. The dealer who's offering $5K over sticker made it sound like he's doing me a favor by giving such a great deal. I wouldn't feel right about paying anything over MSRP.

Partly I'm disgusted with these dealers for their greedy tactics, but much of the blame lies with the consumers who are allowing this to happen.

If it was me I would not being paying over msrp. I have never paid over for any of my Pro’s. Depends on if you need a vehicle or not. As long as people keep paying over the dealers are going to keep the mark up on them.

I agree it’s voting with dollars.

If you look at history of inflation, inflation seems to stop/slow down when purchases stop.

I was one of the last ones to get below MSRP I am sure. Like others I would not pay above MSRP as it only sets a precedent. That is just my opinion though. But I am fortunate enough at the same time to have an extra car so I can weather the storm.

Basic economic principle is supply and demand, plain and simple.

Don’t buy one, but somebody else will…. I’m sure there are people already on the waiting list with their deposits.

It’s not just the dealers that are marking up their prices, every industry seems to be trending the same way.

Gas, groceries, housing, etc, etc. prices are just going up now, and if you think it’s going to get better, check your own industry and be honest.

I’m ok with the mark up from invoice type pricing to MSRP.

Yep you are right it’s just getting started. Time to lower our expectations and expect to pay more for less.

I recently read one long article where due to the chip shortage and other factors, that Toyota may be forced to extend the 5th Generation through the 2023 Model year. So you may have a second opportunity (?)

Also when you think about it why should Toyota even switch the 4runner new design over write away. As long as there is such a demand for the 5Th Gen Toyota may just push it out.

I totally agree. All the equipment I am sure that makes the 5th Gen has been paid for. Customers can’t get enough of them and are paying more than MSRP.

So why spend all the money on an over haul now. Seems sort silly to me.
