I was LEO for ten years, county deputy.

My advice to you! Find a new job.

Switched to the fire side five years ago and never looked back!

Never knew life could be so carefree. Block the highway, eat ice cream, sleep on shift, repeat!

To be fair, this site has a fraction of TW's normal traffic.

Retired detective here, as of August. I agree with the other poster...be a firefighter. The only risk is getting arrested for stealing paychecks.

Did my time for six years, but wound up falling back to a white collar management gig. I don't miss derelict aromas in my car, and ugly broads with track marks who claim they're trying to get straight.

It’s in a nice neighborhood strict HOA, Numerous complaints, second time that year the city has mowed it with a warrant.

I support law enforcement, but not sure I agree with using law enforcement for lawn enforcement. And it seems the HOA should be mowing the lawn not the city. And to be clear, I am not blaming law enforcement for this, just don’t think they should have involved.

Yeah, wild. Was a code enforcement officer doing a civil standby while a contractor mowed the lawn. Then the crazy fuck started shooting at them and lit his house on fire.

Just glad I’m not in a HOA, and again confused why the city was doing something in a HOA. I thought the point was the HOA is responsible for maintaining the HOA. At least in Maine, some HOAs have roads they care for.

Sounds like hoa took the homeowner to court, and got issued an abatement warrant for maintenance in regards to the dude’s lawn. So they were ‘serving the warrant’ by mowing it, and I’m sure fining him heavily.

Well, he ain’t paying fine now, and dam good thing the burnt down house has a mowed lawn, now the contractors will have a place to park once they rebuild on the lot.

Hoa’s are pretty aggressive here in Texas. I signed paperwork saying they could take the deed to my home after repeated violations and lack of payment.

can’t wait to move outta this neighborhood

Not sure if this had anything to do with the HOA or not. A lot of cities have ordinances on this because tall grass provides more habitat for things like fleas, ticks, mice, and other creatures that pose health risks to the community. Code enforcement isn't always a function of law enforcement and is sometimes a function of the city. It sounds like law enforcement wasn't directly involved (based on this story) until the homeowner began firing shots at the city workers.

Congratulations on your retirement. I started DROP in 2017, and now have 18 months to go. I don’t wish time away, but I’m looking forward to reaching the finishing line.

    Thank you!

My plan was always to do 20 then drop for 5. Once I got to 20 in August, I had enough & pulled the plug. You're in a good spot...the last year & a half will fly by!

Two years left for me. It’s definitely not the same job I started 23 years ago. I couldn’t imagine starting this job now. Society has lost their mind.

lots of tolerance. I’m a rookie at 40. Go figure. Love this job. Don’t get me wrong….I have my days, but I help a lot of people. Some just need to talk. I’m more tired than I ever have been, but also more satisfied. Sounds like it just me from this thread, but I’m happy where I am at. All of you who swapped to fire fighters, I’ll clear you in when it’s safe….someone has to protect the heroes ;)

I started in 06 and quit in 16.

the changes in those ten years made me reevaluate my career decision. I actually really enjoyed the job the first few years, then the whole anti police movement started and I couldn’t wait to get the fuck out.

I wish you the best man. Sounds like you are in the honeymoon phase. I remember being a rookie. The first two years I loved this job so much I did it for free as an auxiliary. Even after I was full time, I held a commission at a second agency and I worked for free for them probably 4 shifts a month. It was wonderful, and fun, and I made a difference, and people gave a shit.

Fast forward two plus decades and after a few federal lawsuits, 9 months on admin leave, a thousand frivolous complaints, a few broken bones, COVID, passed over promotions in favor of idiots, negative national media scrutiny not just on the job but on me specifically, self serving administrators, politicized decisions, seeing every good thing you ever did and every award you ever worked for being cancelled out in a heartbeat because of false allegations against you, getting spit on / assaulted / bitten / slashed / having cups of piss dumped on you from rooftops, getting your personal vehicle vandalized at the station, getting beat on in court by snide little bitch-ass defense attorneys determined to make everything some kind of racial issue, not being represented by the same set of laws and civil rights that other citizens are, having people stand on a corner as you drive by and give you the finger and scream profanities at you, seeing laws become more and more lax and seeing prosecutions for those law violations getting declined with increasing frequency, seeing jails refuse to book people, arresting the same guy six times in a shift and feeling completely useless because WTF is the point of arresting him a seventh time... at some point along the way I just stopped giving a fuck.

So now I spend every work day wondering if this is the day I get shot, or go to prison... Or get shot and go to prison. Fuck this job, fuck the people that ruined it, and fuck the admin for being bitches to the people that ruined it.

And firefighters aren't exempt anymore either. Those two poor paramedic bastards in Colorado just got indicted just because they were on the scene of a police incident dubbed to be excessive force.

Man if you’ve been in it for over 20 years and it’s made you so miserable that your profile calls people who don’t think about overlanding like you do “assholes” you should really consider retiring. The Bowman quote in your signature is true. Here’s another one that’s true.

Our lives are fashioned by our choices. First we make our choices. Then our choices make us. Anne Frank.

That's what my psychiatrist keeps telling me!!

Actually you'd never know how disgruntled I am at work because my number one priority other than keeping myself safe is making sure my attitude doesn't influence new guys. I never want to be that old dirty bastard who does nothing but bag on the job in briefing and talk shit on calls and such. I show up early, am squared away, and handle my shit. So to that end, this is me venting in one of the few ways I actually do...

Bowman's quote is listed as my signature because it's generally how I live my life. If I'm not in the government salt mine earning money I'm out exploring; as an example I left before dawn this morning to knock out 300 miles on my motorcycle (getting breakfast on the road now). Given appearances of my negative posts you might be surprised to know I have a good and solid marriage, raised 2 kids without instilling negativity in them, and am working on the same with 3 grandchildren. The job is just that, a job, one which I hate, but not one which affects the 16 hours a day I'm not at work, minus the occasional rant here and there.

The "overland / assholes" thing is an inside joke carried over from TW.
