Do the newer model white 4 Runners have better paint?

    Morning

For years now over at the Taco forums, white paint has been very problematic. I even see there is a class-action lawsuit.

Any idea if the 2021-2022 models are any better/different paint?

    Thanks in advance!

I cannot speak personally on this issue. However last year when I joined this site I recall reading about white paint issues for some on 2019/2020 model year.

I would doubt Toyota has done anything about it given sales. It is sort of like the frame rusting issue it’s been happening for years so why fix if people still buy it.

I had a 2020 and there seems to be some fine print on the white paint. Upon purchase within the glove box was a "toyota oem" white paint applique. Based on the fine print, this product had to be used previous to filing a paint claim. Maybe its state specific, similar to lemon laws but, havnt seen any other mention of this from any other owner. Having said that, I cannot speak to the 21-22 apologies I cannot be of help for those models.

I ordered my 2022 in white, and should arrive next weekend. I will definitely have to ask them about this! Will let you know their response!

As far as I've seen from the internet even though Toyota has some problems with white paint Toyota seems very helpful to their customers. They seem to take care of any problems.

May be having a ceramic coating will help to protect it more.

I do admit that I stopped buying white vehicles and sold what I had even though I never had problems with my white 4runner / Rav4 / Venza. I like lighter colors to help little on hot summer days, so my next option was Silver. As an added bonus it matches the Silver bumper valance and wheels on TRD ORP. Also Silver matches the TRD ORP wheels and chrome on Limited.IMO Toyota will take care of you if you ever face any problem. So I say don't worry if you have already ordered.

Did some googling, appears there was a fix and the issues impact 2009-2018 model years.

I have a 2021 white and the paint still sucks (have a spot that bubbled when it was brand new). Still a single stage.

No idea, but zero issues with my '19 so far. I do apply rejex sealant a couple of times a year though. Since it's not a true clear coat I think a little extra maintenance is a good idea.

2019 here. No major issues and I live in a rather harsh environment with no salt on the roads, but lots of gravel in the winter. I've used a tiny paint pen to fix a couple of chips...

Only odd thing I noticed was random tiny rust spots on the rear hatch...

A little wax and they came right off.

    White is just single stage.

So lazy asses that don't take care of their vehicle should not get white. Mine is perfectly fine other than the couple chips from normal driving.

What you most likely have on the rear hatch is what's generally called "rail dust." It's small particles of iron that become imbedded in the paint surface, then oxidize (rust). Although you more commonly hear about it on white vehicles, they actually affect all vehicles. The difference is that with white paint, they're actually visible.

As for removal, yes, sometimes a wax (with cleaners in it) will remove them. Most detailers used to use a clay bar (with proper lubricant) to remove them. A better path is products like Iron X which actually dissolve the particles. Following up with a good wax / sealant / coating is always recommended.

I do not go to a car wash. I use car wash soap that has a wax protection .. 2016 runner looks like new. my 2000 silverado looks very good .. both vehicles are white ..
in the summer 2021 east coast the rain has smoke in it so I had to wash the vehicles after the rain was dirty.. probably California fires ............................
Toyota does not have a air intake HVAC outdoor air intake screen.. filter gets a mess.. I put mosquito fiberglass screen on top of the windshield HVAC air intake grill .. looking very good and the filter has no big debris ..
GM HAS A SCREEN INTAKE AIR HVAC THAT DOES A GOOD JOB TO NOT GET MORE MESS ON THE FILTERS..
many have HVAC blower motor failures.

White Paint in 2021 was still the single stage that was causing problems before. Source: I asked corporate.

I have been reading some on this. I must say I was surprised by the notion of a single stage paint in the 21st century. In fact, it is single stage. But is it not the single stage paint of the 80's. It is base mixed with clear and shot in one stage. This is opposed to shooting base and then clear over base that has flashed.

The reason toyota is doing this is because clear tends to add a yellow hue. In the case of super white, well...they want it to be super white.

While there is some shock factor in this discovery as I await my super white ORP next week, it is not as archaic as it sounds in my opinion.

So far my 2018 has been fine.

I installed a 3M clear bra. I've had a couple of small paint chips that I touched up.

It was an OEM Toyota product that I cannot find online. Purchased new in TX in 2020 and found in my glove compartment when adding my insurance documents. I really wish I could be of more assistance.

Drove from TX to CA and FL a few times and even the front bumper paint was chipping from road debris. Got a great deal for selling and after about a year, the super white lost its pizzaz! Cheers

My white 2020 has been through some serious bush just a few weeks ago. Canadian winters with lots of sand and salt on the road. I pressure wash the car, haven’t taken it to a cloth/brush because I’m not sure how well it will do with the nfab rack.
Maybe the white hides the clear coat scratches very well, but I haven’t seen any major damage or any sign that this paint is worse than any other car. Worse paint job was out 19 mustang in red, which felt like it had sand in it straight from the factory.
We camped 10 weekends straight this summer, sleeping in the back with our dog. Only 2 small chips on the top side of the bumper.

as others have said, it's still a single stage paint so i'm doubtul. one of the reasons i passed on one personally, though i love how white 4runners look with a few mods.

I’ve got what appears to be rust spots on the rear hatch. Looks like some type of impurity under the paint. You can feel a pimple where it’s happening. This does not appear to be rail/brake dust particles. Not sure what to think about it.

Very common to see this at the end of a long winter. Not being able to see or feel it, my diagnostic abilities are somewhat limited, but I'd still lean towards iron contamination on the surface. The easiest way to remove it is a product like Iron-X. (Read and follow the instructions carefully.) Clay will also work, but you need to know what you're doing so as not to marr the surface.

Yeah. I actually went and looked at it more closely. It is one of those iron spots, but it was on what looked like a tiny hardened drop of pine pitch. I removed it with a paper towel and hand sanitizer.

Definitely gonna clay bar it this spring. I’ve never had a white vehicle before so I guess they’re just a lot more noticeable, at least on the super white.

Reviving this post. While I can’t really blame the SW paint for this it still sucks. We’ve got hood scoop movement with subsequent rubbing/chipping on both sides. And we also have rubbing/chipping on the rear “4Runner” hatch garnish on both lower corners. It sucks our 21’ ORP with less than 10k is going to have a repainted hood and hatch.

I did some reconnaissance work at my local dealer… all four preowned 4R’s they had had some form of this including a $68k 22’ Pro with 1300 miles. It’s certainly not isolated. I’m surprised it’s not talked about more.

Having a hard time seeing on the Lime Rush what the issue is. Am I looking at paint blemish just above the curved area of black trim. The issues with the white were more noticeable. Maybe it’s just pic on my phone
