Shiet for that kind of mark up, I'll just sell out at that point and buy into a Range Rover Sport.

Not offhand, but you can probably find it with some googling. Based on dealer talk, and news articles regarding chip shortage - it sounds like this will be going on at least through 2022. But some say even longer.

I think getting something under MSRP is a steal right now. Paying MSRP is not terrible, but not great.

    If you can wait, wait.

I recall browsing a thread with what folks had paid for their new 4runners in 2019 and thought I should have done better then $4500 off MSRP.

Go to the Toyota website, and start building a 2022 SR5 premium. Then adjust the URL to reflect 2021 instead of 2022 and you'll see the pricing for 2021 models. 2021 SR5 Premium 2WD models started at $39,075, while 4WD models started at $40,950.

There was a very small increase in MSRP between the 21s and 22s. I think it was under a 100 bucks, but don’t remember exactly.

If the chip and other raw material shortages continue through 2022, I wonder if that will force Toyota to continue the 5th Generation 4R through the 2023 model year ? Just speculating.

Hendrick Toyota in Apex said they're not marking up above MSRP. I talked to Tom McClay there several times and he was one of the nicest and most professional sales guys I talked to in my search.

Thought I struck gold when I found this thread but didn’t see Ohio on the list or in any posts. If anyone has info on fair minded, honest dealers in or near southwest Ohio, I’d sure appreciate the info. BTW, AMD (The Car Care Nut on YouTube) just published a vid in which he says NEVER pay over MSRP. He further argues to remember which ones are up charging and to never do business with them. https://youtu.be/MDLv8Vz1CVw

I would agree 99% of the time paying over sticker is akin to literally burning cash.

There's an article about a lady paying $6k over MSRP on a Kia Telluride. Ouch. The hit wouldn't be so bad on something like a ORP or Pro.

There's a saying something like this "Buyers don’t make logical, rational buying decisions. They make emotional decisions and then justify those decisions by rationalizing them after the fact."

In that vein - as far as TRD Pro's go, they seem to hold value really well. So, I could see justifying paying MSRP. Maybe even a little over if you really want one, even if it's not a "deal".

That you can pretty much turn around and sell one for what you paid, or more, says something.

They are sought after, and somewhat hard to find. Supply and demand. I don't think it's right what dealers are doing, but I understand.

I called every Toyota dealer in AZ looking for a LR Pro and asked two questions: are you charging over MSRP and are you keeping a list of buyers. About a quarter of the dealers were not charging over MSRP (some are only doing it on the Pro). For the ones not charging a markup I got on a list if they had one, the others I made sure to let them know I was ready to buy. Got a call last Friday that the person who reserved the LR Pro could not qualify for financing and we picked the vehicle up on Monday when it arrived. Got lucky. Wife LOVES it.

The current environment and it being a Toyota, is the only reason I paid MSRP for a Pro. I was prepared to wait for as long as it took to not pay more. Dealers love desperate/impatient buyers. I kept a list of all the dealers charging a mark up and will not do business with them in the future.

    Congrats!

Would be great if you could let us know the MSRP dealers. Only two I know of in AZ are Avondale and Precision.

I had a 21 LR Pro fall into my lap in a similar fashion. I happened to be the first to inquire about it when it was posted online. The original buyer found one elsewhere. Paid $2,000 above MSRP in May. I was fine with that. They could have sold it for $5,000 or more above MSRP within a couple of days. My self imposed ceiling was $3,000 above MSRP. I could probably sell it for $5,000 more than I paid for it today. An extra $2,000 was not a big deal on a $52,000 vehicle. Additionally, I am self employed so it is a tax write off - reducing it's cost to me by 40%. I too was adamant about not paying above MSRP, but supply and demand always rules! Same as our crazy real estate market across the country!

I bought from Avondale and they were awesome.

    Additional AZ Dealers charging MSRP:
    • Sierra Vista (can be added to the list for $500 deposit) Pablo was great.
    • Desert Toyota
A few other possibilities, I believe Surprise and Riverview were not, but would need to confirm. Big Two I don't recall if they were.

Confirmed charging mark up for TRD Pro (this may change, and some were saying they only do it on certain models):
    • Tempe Toyota - $10K (TRD Pro only)
    • Larry H Miller (Peoria)
    • Camelback - $10K (TRD Pro only)
    • Right Toyota (Scottsdale) - $30K
    • Hatch Toyota (Show Low)
    • Earnhardt Toyota (Mesa) - $10K
    • Bell Toyota (Scottsdale) - $10K

No judgement, lol! It is crazy to walk in there with no leverage at all. I hated it.

I contemplated a bit over just to get it over with and possibly avoid headaches/repairs of the older car were are replacing.

You hit the nail on the head - lack of leverage when buying a LR Pro. It would have required an extraordinary amount of effort and luck to find one at MSRP from March thru today. Additionally this dealership is located 25 miles from my house. Some people are searching the whole country to find one of these. I too just wanted to get it over with, the opportunity cost of continually searching was killing me as well! It all worked out in the end!

Just put a deposit down on a LR ORP. MSRP with no other bs fees. Wilde Toyota in Milwaukee. Very happy with the experience thus far.

Has anyone bought from KOCH33 in Easton, PA. They have great inventory and was hoping to see if anyone had any luck working a deal with them in the last 2 months or so.

if I was closer, it would be fun to work on setting up a deal with them, and right before, tell them to take the mark up and stuff where the sun doesn't shine, then go climb into my perfectly good Tacoma.

Spoke with a couple people at Avondale Toyota in AZ.

They are now requiring a $500 deposit to get your name on a waiting list. Was also told that deposit will be increasing to weed out folks who aren’t serious.

When I inquired about a month ago they weren’t letting you have a color choice. Now the list is based on color choice. According to them the number one pick is Lime Rush.

So, if you’re interested in a color other than Lime Rush, might be a good chance to reserve one.

Dolan Toyota in Reno has a waiting list of over 100 people!

Hey, how about a happy story for once? Thanks so much to everyone on this thread…I’m a long time lurker and this gave me a ton of great info for my recent purchase. So, now I’ll add my own story and hope it helps the next person.

I just took delivery of a 2022 TRD Off-road from Larry H. Miller in Boulder, CO. I reserved a vehicle from their allocation on September 15th, so it took around 5 weeks. They actually quoted me $500 under MSRP, which seemed almost too good to be true in the current craziness. They also didn’t require a deposit (“if you back out there are 20 other people who will buy it, so why mess with a deposit?”). My salesperson, Zach, did a good job keeping me informed as to the progress of the build and shipment. When I went to pick it up today, it turned out it actually was too good to be true and they had the deal written up at MSRP ($500 above the price I had in writing from them previously). They claimed the original discounted price was an honest mistake, which after some discussion I’m inclined to believe. The salesperson had mentioned MSRP several times on our discussions and I just assumed that’s what the quoted price was. The quote I had originally received was long since expired so they could have rightfully told me to pound sand and sold it to the next person in line. Instead, they seemed genuinely concerned with verifying my story and then coming to an acceptable resolution. After a bit of back and forth, they agreed to a $250 discount plus roughly $250 in accessories that I was going to buy anyway, so I’m happy. The rest of the transaction was one of the quickest and easiest I’ve ever had. Overall I’d definitely recommend them.

Why was the quote you originally got “expired”? Congrats on getting a good deal for this market.

When they put it together it had some fine print that said something to the effect of “This price is valid for 30 days”. I think that’s fairy standard practice.
