2022 Lunar Rock Trail - Just picked up

Good Afternoon,

Long time viewer first time caller.

I just picked up my 2022 Lunar Rock 4Runner Trail Edition with cooler this afternoon. I traded in my 2021 Black SR5 4 Runner just to trick it up a bit.

I will post photos later. As a 7th time owner of the good ole 4 Runner, who is rather conservative in his colors, I took a chance here and will say the color is rather stunning in a way. Although I am still divided.

So far it drives precisely as my SR5 did, thus the transition was seamless. Interior wise there was no difference with the exception of the cooler (same color as the car), and the surprising pull out tray in the back. The tray doesn't extend far but it is something I am going to examine a bit more closely and see what good it can do and what its limits are.

I did find a flaw though and will test this further, but this might be because I didn't have it on my SR5 nor any other models I have driven. The factory rack might be an issue. On the ride home hitting speeds of 70mph, the noise generation almost made me think a window was open. The noise subsided when moving under 50mph. But it was substantial.

As someone who has never had a true rack up top, is this a common feature among those who do have one?

If I had one of those racks, that noise would drive me nuts because I typically drive at higher speeds...

 

I have the same rack on mine and concur with what you’ve found—very noisy at highway speed!

Thank you so much for the warm welcome. I have a few pics as of now but will get more. And to those who confirm that the factory rack does cause some noise, I do appreciate you confirming my thought.

Have you ever considered removing it or replacing it?

Jrunr...I will send you a picture but it really doesn't pull out that far. It would have been better if they actually made it really functional. As in stacked it so it can pull out farther and then added legs for support that deploy on their own or ones you can add for additional support. More flash than fire it seems so far.

 

Welcome from Texas, & congrats on the new 4R, the best color IMHO. That factory rack would drive me nuts if the noise is that obvious, I would take it off right away.

 

I am Texas as well. I am considering having it removed and storing it away until I find something else to replace it with. Surprised Toyota didn't pick up on that issue before they went into production with it.

 

Good idea. Yes, it looks like people complaining about it, not without reason. I'm sensitive to those things as well.

Edgesalon.....it runs better than my SR5 except for that than nasty wind effect from the rack....

I could but I wouldn't sell the basket... Gotta keep some purity to it...Respect.

 

Best thing I did was remove the rack on mine once I got home from the dealership

 

Nice ride - luv the color. Yes my 21 trail has wind noise from the rack - comes with the territory. I don't mind it and I mounted my CB antenna on top rail of rack to boot.

 

Upgrade the speakers and turn up tithe music, then it’s what noise.

 

I drove the factory rack for two days before I put the gobi on.

didn’t notice any change in noise

 

Just saw a trd off-road Lunar rock in person at the dealership. Looks good in person. 45k isn’t a bad asking price either for the current market.
