TTAC tried to make a case for the 5th Gen. Says locker is a must have, 2Runner is pointless, Limited sucks.

Also can’t discern that it has changed visually inside and out in the last 10 years or that the 5 speed isn’t bad because it doesn’t have 10 gears, but because Toyota has a 6 speed available for this application.

The reader comments are pure butthurt.

I read this, now you have to as well.

Those comments were painful to read. It's easy to talk negatively about something when you have no need for it.

The comments are funny. Most seem to have been written by competitors, maybe even by the same person. And yes, 2wd makes sense in no-snow zones. Heck, why even have AWD crossovers in those areas except for the occasional downpour?

Reviews that knock the 4Runner’s aged engine, transmission, interior, etc., at this stage of the Gen5’s career, are pretty much pointless.

I researched, selected, bought, and thoroughly enjoy my 2019. And I didn’t have one second of someone else’s opinion enter my mind when I did so. So as they say, haters gonna hate. Gives them something to do I guess.

    Ride on!

My complain is the opposite of those folks, I complain that why Toyota put the push button start and the radar system in 4Runner :( They should have been an option, and not standard

As with many others here, I like proven tech. The 4runners 4.0/5 speed auto combo is as bulletproof as anything on the market today, and I don't need or want multiple screens that will start to fail as the vehicle ages.

I’m not knocking anybody’s choices, but there is such a narrow gap between the 2WD and 4WD versions that I don’t see a reason to get one, especially if you finance over 3 to 5 years.

The maximum that I did was 89 on I-90. It went fine. Speed limit on I-90 in Montana is 80

So, I have a 4wd. Just gonna get that out of the way. But I had a 2wd Tacoma with meaty tires and had zero issues in the snow or boonies (I live in BFE). I will always be a fan of a set up 2wd. No clue why it is always shat upon

I grew up driving 2wd trucks in the snow and ice. For the most part not a problem, until there was.

Where I live now, I have not actually needed 4wd for almost twenty five years. Last year was the first time I needed 4wd. However there were many many times I would not have left home in a non AWD or 4wd vehicle.

This year was different, I had a need to go out on the roads and 2wd was not enough. I got stuck, in parking lot of all places. Criss crossed with iced ruts filled with snow. Not even with limited slip, 34.5" all terrain tires, traction control and a bed full of shoveled snow. However a push button on the dash to engage 4wd was enough to easily handle it.

I hope we have another storm like that so I can put the 4Runner to the test. But I expect 2wd will be enough.

I’d like the manual transmission, but am finally willing to go auto.

My work truck has crank windows. It really makes me appreciate Toyota for getting rid of those altogether. The driver window I can live with. But, it really sucks not being able to open and close the passenger window while driving.

Power windows and locks and keyless entry are things that 99+ % of people want. Toyota was smart to make them standard in every car and simplify production. I can't figure out why Chevy hasn't done the same.

Same. I want it to work. I love the knobs. Quite honestly if I could get my grandfathers 1975 F-150 Custom new I would. That thing literally had nothing interior wise. Bench seat, am radio, not ever a cigarette lighter. There was a chrome cap where it should have been. My 02 Tacoma reminds me of it.

You can still get a Wrangler with power nothing and a key. TFL has a video of theirs.
My 88 Bronco II has power nothing, the only thing I'd really like power on it is the mirrors.
I can crank the passenger window from the driver seat but to adjust the passenger mirror I have to get out of the vehicle.

I am very thankful for power mirrors. I hated the manual side mirror on my 84 Toyota 3/4 Ton Longbed because I had to roll down the drivers window to adjust. I remember cursing that thing when i needed to adjust when it got dark and was cold and raining. And, forget the passenger side mirror.

I’ll take the power mirrors and also the power windows. But, can live without all the nanny devices!!

    Cheers

Blacked out badges, window deflectors, smoked 3rd brake light. I have a Borla muffler on order as well as some color matched engine cover stickers. I'll be painting the stock wheels soon as well. Falken tires in the fall as well.
Thank you for reminding me why I don't watch TTAC .

Oh yeah. In my 1st Gen 87 4Runner, essentially a pickup with fiberglass shell, in 2WD the ass end would often break free and slide sideways going uphill on hardpack snow. Even when driving gently. That was the reminder to drop it into 4WD.

Really? I've had about 8 Toyotas from an '85 Celica to a '19 4Runner. All had power locks and some had well over 200,000 miles when I got rid of them. I have not had one single issue with the door lock ever, nor has anyone I've known who has a Toyota.

Was there a particular model that had issues?
