Just sold my 1999 SR5 and bought a gorgeous new 2016 Trail Premium.

Still learning slot about this truck but I definitely know I want to lift it...

What's everyone putting on these rigs. I want something affordable but tough enough to do some off-roading with.

Both 3rd and 5th look good. Regading lifts I've been looking more closely at the OME (made by ARB I believe). Personally want to avoid spacers, and will opt for the upper control arm even with just a 3/2 kit, just for piece of mind when aligning the wheels. Also, I'm kind of on the fence about the need of a diff drop for just a 3/2 lift, but I don't see what it can hurt by doing it since it's cheap and easy. The only thing you want to be mindful of is that if you do a 1" or more diff drop I think you will have interference with the factory skid plates. Regardless, there's a handful of great aftermarket skid options out there to look at.

I feel ya, I'm kinda right there with you. After doing some research, I found this link and told myself I should probably save and go with this insane setup, let me know what you think.

I think if money isn't the limiting factor, that's a sweet looking setup. I'm actually just kinda meh on Icons, i'd personally rather not pay a premium for a name, and just get a good quality lift with solid value like in the video.

I know this sounds crazy to some, but I really like the look of the Trail rims, I'd rather just lift it a bit and find some meatier tires for them, such as some Toyo's or of course the always sexy KO2s.

I couldn't agree with you more, I love the Stock wheels. I will definitely be looking to save money and put some beefy tires on them as you mentioned. As far as the lift is concerned, money is definitely a factor as I paid a lot for the truck. I guess I will have to get the kit little by little. I was looking at the Billstein setup also, and it seems do-able. $700 for front and $400 for rear.

The Billstein is probably pretty easy, I have replaced shocks several times on vehicles and it's more of a safety / common sense thing than a difficult thing. I would say, however, that I want to not pay to re-do something later, so if the Billsteins are good, you're good. If you decide later you want a lift, now you're stuck with parts you don't need, unless they can be used in the lift you're creating.

If you plan on adding some armor to this thing, I'd probably think the Billstein route will leave you wanting pretty quickly. As for me, I'm going with the Pelfreybuilt hidden winch, a synthetic line winch, and probably just better skids and sliders. No big bumpers, no roof rack, no rear bumper.

I think I'm going to leave the suspension stock until I determine it's a limiting factor. I was completely blown away what this thing did at an off road park bone stock with those awful Dunlop tires. Really new tires and a recovery option (winch and shackles) is going to take me mostly where I want to go, and keep a sleek looking street car with off road chops hidden underneath.

You're right, I guess I was confused and thought the Billsteins were a lift. It's gonna be a few months before I do anything major to this thing, and I'm sure I can get pretty much everywhere with this stock setup. But ice also seen videos like this that make me want to lift it even faster. But in the meantime, I'm right there with you, just seeing where I can get with it, bone stock.

Not only that, but those stock tires are the real killer. It's what is putting down the traction, or in the case of the 2nd guy, what isn't putting down the traction :)

I will say the lift would have helped him get past the skid plate bumping, but honestly most of my trails we are going on for a while won't be this nasty. We are taking it easy.

Expensive is relative honestly. I got rid of a Chevy for a better quality, higher resale (if needed), more reliable vehicle. To boot, since I had just paid off the other, I ended up spending $150 / mo less on this note than the Chevy. So the OP's situation might not be so expensive, considering all you are getting.

I couldn't agree more with Fajitas, at the end of the day we all have different circumstances and finances. I did go from having no payments on my 99, to having payments with this. Furthermore, for added peace of mind I added an additional $3,500 of lifetime Toyota platinum coverage to the sticker price. Meaning for life I don't worry about anything with the vehicle, no oil changes, electronic or powertrain issues, not even dents or scratches because they're covered as well. So yes, I did buy a 40k vehicle, but my fiancial situation allowed me to. Now lifting it and adding rims and tires, that's another story. It'll have to be a little at a time.

This looks like a cost effective way to lift my truck 3 inches so I can put bigger tires in. Any reviews or feedback on this kit?

If all you want is an inexpensive lift to get bigger tires on then a good option the Toytec spacer lift 2.5/1.5. I've been running it since I bought the truck and it's fine. Allows use of 285s with no rubbing. It's a good lift to use while you are deciding on a good lift to use, you know? I know in an earlier post you said "no spacers" but I'm not sure if you mean wheel spacers or spacer lifts...?

I am actually in the process of installing the Toytec BOSS suspension lift and TC UCAs, which I decided on after a lot of research. It won't actually lift the truck any more than the spacer lift, but will offer a better off road ride. It seems the best bang for the buck, and the HD spring will allow use of the SSS hybrid bumper and winch that I'm waiting on.

Like you, I like the TE wheels. My truck is silver, too, and I'm debating about painting the wheels black. Just can't quite commit to the look, though. I actually had a set of the TRD wheels in hand ready to mount, but ultimately, I decided that the TE wheels are actually better for a wider range of off road tires (7.5" wide v 7" wide).

I hope you plan on leaving off the bull bar. What with them being hideous and killers of approach angle and such.

The spacer comment was me. I certainly don't mean spacers are bad, I'm just saying if you want off road performance to go straight to a suspension lift and save the money. You make a good point, if you're looking for a lift for tires, spacer lifts are a great way to do it cheap and prevent rub.

I will say I do a fair amount of off road and I really don't see the spacers as a negative. A lot of guys sneer at them but I have never failed to get where I needed to go, nor have I have a failure of anything. The only "issue" is that you are beating up your suspension (and, by proxy, your passengers and cargo) because you don't have a off road tuned suspension, but... I've never thought much about it.

I see a lot of rigs with sweet ass, high dollar suspension lifts around here, and most of them have absolutely no dirt caked up in the crevices, so you know they aren't getting used. Meanwhile, there is a large cadre of guys with spacers who are out tearing it up with their $250 lifts - or no lifts - and just don't know any better.

I'm upgrading from the spacers more to support my bumper and winch than I am because I truly feel that I need a suspension lift. And, I'm going to be honest, I'm a little poseurish in the sense that I want a "real" lift and not spacers... but at least I will be using it for it's designed purpose.

Just to prove that I do use the spacer lift....

Looks good man, and I'm glad you're using it. Friends and family said I was nuts going to an off road park with the dealer tags still on it cause mine had not come in yet. I told them you don't buy a saw and fear cutting wood, so why by a 4Runner and fear a little dirt. I never planned on going through the tough trails, but before I buy something for it I wanted to see what it would do first. Honestly, for the kind of off roading (overlanding) this thing will see at least during it's gentle years while it's new, some Toyos or BFGs + sliders is all I plan on doing. Might add a winch, probably won't for a while.

Either way, my comment wasn't meant to be insulting towards spacers. I just am simply someone who buys what I need when I need it, and at the moment I don't need anything. But I tend to go full ass in when I do, so I know that spacers would add a rougher ride, limit some articulation, and ultimately leave me wanting a suspension lift. So I'll save my money and just not doing it until I need it, then I'll do it in a way I won't feel like I left something on the table.

Great pics, I'm glad to see us actually using our tools :)

All great feedback, bud. Thanks! After doing some more research this weekend, I'm going to do just that. Do a simple life so I can get some bigger tires on there, while waiting to find what suspension lift to go with. I definitely took that ugly ass bull bar off and it's not going anywhere near the truck... EVER!!! Are you in the market for one? I'll give you a great deal! Lmao

I'm the same way, I had spacers on my 99 for a while, but I more than likely won't put them on my 2016. I hope, and don't think I'll need them for the 285/70/17 KO2's and the 3" lift. Will I?

Here's the look I'm going for. This is @swellrunner on IG and his rig is sick!

MGM + Blacked out trail rims + KO2s. I bet I could sell my wife on those tires with this pic.
