I have a 2021 Pro and have been getting what I consider to be horrible gas mileage since I've had it. I took it to the dealer after about 1000 miles and they said everything is working properly. It gets about 11.8/15 on average.

    HELP!!

How are you driving it? I let mine shift at about 2000 on the street and I get 16 all street with stock size tires.

I have tried driving many different ways and have gotten slightly worse, but driving it easy gets me about 11.8-12 around town. I live in Houston so there are NO hills. Stock tires too.

That's pretty poor milage. I drive pretty heavy footed and get 15mpg mixed lifted and 33's.

Hills are going to kill mileage. It may get a little better as the diff breaks in but it's not going to be 4mpg better. Also hand calculate mileage.

DAMN. I'd be cool with that, but the best I've seen on the highway is 15.1

I am getting a little over 17 over the first 10k miles. 18-20 when we do highway trips, 12 on the really quick round trips to daycare in the morning. Really low when on trails. I drive like a grandma though.

My mileage can take a nose dive, or got great depending on the wind.

I heard or read somewhere on this forum that there was a recall on the fuel pump on some 5th Gen models … I think that was the recall; Did the dealer check that? … Also, this may sound like a dumb thing to try, but you could disconnect both the battery terminals overnight and reconnect them the next day … this should allow onboard computer to reset & recalibrate itself. Just a thought.

Not sure if they checked the FP, but they said they checked "calibration"...whatever that means. I tried the battery disconnection trick already.

Going off the display in the center of the cluster. When I fill up it usually says about 278 range.

    I average 17-18 on 285's.

    11-12 mpg for a stock 4Runner on 265's doesn't sound right.

Gotcha … then you could always take it to another dealership to see what there thought’s are … Best of Luck to you! and I hope that they figure it out, because it’s a brand new vehicle and you should be getting better gas mileage than what your getting.

I own a 2016 4RTP and first year with stock tires I was getting an average of 19 to 21mpg on highway and stop & go traffic.

That display takes a while to catch up with reality. Mine began in the 12 - 14 mpg range when new, then worked its way up to around 19. I don't pay any attention to it any more - I turned it off months ago, and just hand calculate each fillup.

That does seem low. Being in Texas, the high speed limits on the highway can kill mileage as well.

If you're just driving around town, with traffic and a bunch of lights and stop signs, that doesn't sound out of the ordinary. I used to get about 10 in my old Grand Cherokee that I used strictly in town.

Also, at 1k miles it's not broken in yet. Mileage may improve in a few K's.

Have you taken it on any long trips yet? Maybe plan a highway trip and see what you get. Your mileage will be pretty bad at 80mph as well, but if you can keep it under 70, 20mpg on the highway should be pretty easy.

These things are just really heavy and thirsty, and take a lot of of energy to get up to speed, especially if you're heavy on the gas. To get good mpg in these, you can't get too deep in the throttle. Basically just keep it at or 2,000 rpm, and let it accelerate at its own pace. Be patient, it'll take a while, but it'll get there eventually haha. It's easy to get frustrated with the lack of torque and just floor it, and that's what tanks your mileage.

I have 8500 miles on it and it gets those MPGs I said. Best I've seen on a 260 mile trip was 15 averaging about 75 mph.

True, but I'm still only getting about 280 miles per tank, which averages 12 ish MPG.

Keep in mind, my 17-18 mpg is driving conservative. I'm not a grandma driver but I definitely don't drive like a teenage boy or a soccer mom.

I keep it at 70 or under on the highway. Speeds above 70 will kill your mpg.

Thats what I used to get with 285's, but with an average speed of less than 20 mph since I don't have to go very far for anything.

I have a 21 LR Pro (all stock) that is almost four months old and 5,500 miles of usage. I am usually averaging a little over 18 mpg on every fill up (dash gauge and hand calculated). I am 59 and drive with a light foot since I know the MPG's are not very good and I am rarely in a hurry these days. Driving around 80 miles per hour with the AC blasting on a hot day and climbing the small Maryland mountains on the interstate the gauge was showing 15 - 16 mpg.

How is that Outback treating you?

I drove a Crosstrek for five years and thought it was a ok vehicle. I really like and obviously prefer the 21 LR Pro 4R I have, but at the end of the day it is just a vehicle. If I had to get rid of it tomorrow for some unforeseen reason, I would be ok with it. If I had to get rid of my mountain bike tomorrow I would be pissed!

Maybe try lifting the rear wheel off the ground to check if the parking brake is dragging/too tight. You should be able to spin it with only very light brake drag.

    This seems wrong..

Usually when the light comes on it's about 18 gallons to fill up. That would put your mileage around 15.

If you were actually getting 12 mpg, it would take over 23 gallons to drive 280 miles. Our tank is only 23 gallons, and even if you drive until the range is 0 it usually takes about 19-20 to fill up.

You might want to double check your math.

Even if I subtract the mileage left on the dash and take off a couple gallons from the tank the math is still the same.
    280 total range/23 gallons = 12 mpg
    260 total range/20 gallons = 13 mpg

Better, but still not even close to what most people get. Frustrating as hell.

I'm going to take it to another local dealer and see what they say.

Thanks for everyone's help and ideas!
