Nice! I have Rigid D-SS ditch lights and really like them. But, Diode Dynamics really seems to have the best fog options.

I mean... We will be having a sale on DD fogs that starts in less than 24 hours... :playball: I'll post up on the forum here when we do!

Also @Jstash77 right now the best street-legal option out there by a decent margin is the Diode Dynamics SS3. I'll have to take you away from the 4Runners site for a minute, but there's some "light reading" over here if you want to get down into the dirty details!

My apologies! I'm not on this 4Runners forum as much so I understand that folks don't know me here! Name's Colton, and I own Hotshot Offroad. We're pretty active over on the Tacoma and Tundra sides! I admittedly don't have nearly everything on the site yet that I would like to be up there, so if you have something in mind specifically please let me know and we can probably help out. We carry a ton more brands/products that you won't see listed yet.

I went with the Baja Designs Squadron Sport Fog Kit (Amber). Serious improvement off road.

Baja does make an SAE kit, but with HID headlights I never really noticed a huge need or improvement with my stock fogs so I went with something that would be more beneficial off road or when I really needed them on back roads (using them like high beams).

Yep I'm definitely not knocking the route you chose! For the use case it's great!

BD does sell "SAE" lights, although they are not great performers, and hardly fall into SAE spec. It's the only BD light I don't offer.

Is it the color that determines whether it's street legal? or the intensity?

I read somewhere that color doesn't affect effectiveness e.g. White vs yellow, but color choices are personal preference.

One final question, do most prefer yellow or amber?

Someone posted earlier that they put amber covers over their stock fogs. I thought that might be a good way to protect against rock damage. My 3M bra included the main headlight fixtures but not the fog light lenses.

Just from what I know you want amber for fog, snow, dust, etc. white just reflects off the pre mentioned and can be more dangerous than the helpful since it reflects back in the direction it is coming from for example your point of view.

as far as legality some colors are illegal but it mostly is the beam pattern and light throw. Sae dot compliance beams will be very focused and usually in fog cases aimed more towards the ground. While others like the Baja’s and diodes that are sae dot compliant throw light everywhere. Up down side to side straight out but it’s not an crisp focused pattern.

I sometimes use the stock white fogs to supplement the headlights, mainly to light up the ditches next to the road to look for animals.

Amber sounds like it would be better for snow. Might have to try some of those inexpensive stick on's for fun.

I went with Amber because I drive through Tule fog to get to my youngest and snow to get to my eldest. Not gonna lie and say I don’t like the looks, but it was a functional choice.

I have a 20 Venture and lighting on road is sad to say the least . Went SS3 pros in white . Bright white light (Brighter than stock halogens headlamps) and no blinding other drivers. Get the pros, ridiculous light

On my Tacoma I have Baja's amber SAE. They look good but dont improve normal nite driving much. Thats ok since tacoma 21' has pretty good headlite and I added a lightbar.

For 18' base 4runner, I need better light and want the white fogs. Street legal. Big fan of Diode Dynamics so will look for your sale.

Question: are the DD's a plug and play kit for 4runner like the Baja's were for Tacoma? Baja was an easy and clean install and hope for same with white DD fogs on 4runner

I know that @newlife took a good crack at this, but I'll try to give a little more clarity here:
At a basic level - "SAE J583 is the official designation of the fog beam pattern, it specifies a very wide beam with a flat horizontal cut off allowing no light above the cut off horizon. This is critical in a fog application for multiple reasons, the first being the purpose of the fog light is to put the light beam low and wide so that the driver can find the edges of the road at low speed without causing the beam to break the horizon and reflect light back at the driver in rain/fog/snow/dust, which reduces visibility in the conditions that the fog is primarily designed for. The clean cut off also allows this beam to be run in oncoming traffic without blinding oncoming drivers, unlike any other pod beam pattern."

Color legality(as long as it falls within forward facing light legality) is not a major issue. Ex. You can have white, amber, yellow. You cannot have red or blue no matter the cutoff.

Intensity - To my knowledge there isn't an intensity maximum. However, there is an up-light limit (which in layman's terms is how much light is oncoming traffic seeing) which all legal lights have to meet.

Color Selection - Selective yellow is better in poor weather conditions that fogs are designed for. It is a longer, lesser energy wavelength of light, and as a result will reflect back into the driver's eyes LESS when there's a lot of "obstacles" for the light to reflect off of (snow/dust). If you are in a place that doesn't see much of either of those issues then the white will work well since it will have a greater output intensity account the light not having to go through a yellow filter to get the correct output color.

Most of my customers go with yellow!

Side Note - If you are in a place that gets snow/ice and are looking at picking up SS3s do yourself a favor and go either Pro/Max. The Sport DOES NOT get hot enough to melt ice!

The DD's are plug-and-play just like the Bajas were in the Tacoma. A kit will come with lights, brackets, and plug-and-play harnesses. Looking forward to your experience with having them both first-hand!
