Hello... What would be your recommendations for updating the Toyota Nav system in my '18 4Runner? First off for anyone that has done it or perhaps more familiar than I is it really even necessary? What does the update even do, I'd assume it of course picks up any changes to roads and navigation points of interest and things like that? Would updating it fix like any "bug" issues kind of the way Apple sends out updates for their phones.
Lastly what are the options for loading any updates I'd assume either the dealer or buying it yourself? What is it you even buy (physically is it a CD?) and most important how difficult is it to run yourself? On a scale of 1-10 how easy or difficult is it to "upload" yourself?
    Any thoughts/opinions would be appreciated...Thanks...

I can't comment on the 2018, I don't know if its the same, but my 2020 updates through the wifi and I believe any other updates are usually included at the dealer if you get a service there. So far that's been my experience.

Honestly, I don’t use my on-board nav. Google Maps on my phone is my only travel tool.

On our factory radio (with Nav), there is a corner that has an SD card in it. I believe that is where maps are stored.
As for the factory navigation; I love how it leaves dots as to where you have been. You can go exploring & always make it back to camp. Just follow the crumbs. Lol

DG, don’t know if it helps, but I’ve been trying to figure out how to update the native maps on my ‘18 as well. The Micro SD card in the port does hold the Nav data. Through a burst of courage or fool-hardy optimism, I figured I’d pull it and try an update from a legit looking site I found under a Google search: https://toyota.garmin.com/
I’ve seen this link referenced on this site as well, and I think those stating that a Garmin partnership would likely have branding heavy recognition in the maps are probably right; it’s not the same format as the 4Runner card - the map load wasn’t recognized by the Garmin app. Only thing I’ve found so far is the Toyota Parts for the Nav Map “SD card” (https://parts.toyota.com/productSea...ccessory=0&isPerformance=0&searchTerm=Sd card)
For me, the price tag isn’t worth the gain, so I’ll use it as a pretty background while I’m driving and getting directions from Google Maps-Skynet.

On my 2018 I have the dreaded uncalibrated screen so I have to use the Steering wheel control to 'return'. Not a huge issue, however after looking at this I believe I'll be tempted after I get new bumper. Very interesting and looks like an easy but tedious install. Thanks

Based on the part number and the price difference I would say the 74 is the latest version. Of course I just recently purchased the 73 version. The story of my life.

With the fake products ive seen these days im not sure if that product ending in 74 is same as 73. Unlike updating a GPS unit like Garmin Its sketchy these things don't say exactly what date the update is.

When I checked before buying the update, 73 was the latest and came with the 22 models, so not sure if 74 is real. But when I checked in my nav, mine now shows it has 2021 maps. They are always behind the year model of the vehicle by one year.

And I just bought this also, about 2 weeks ago. Did not see a 74 available at the time, so some research will have to be done. Sometimes they will say this is 2022, but that is the year released not the map dates. 74 should be the 22 maps.

I will wait until the price drops and I might get the update (or wait a year or two).
    Not worth changing every year.

How fake are these Amazon sellers? See the answer I got when I ask for the map version and date. Def not going to buy this. This might be same as ver 73 where its 2020-04 update.

We were hunting elk and deer on a private ranch in WY when a fairly serious storm came in. A buddy was out hunting mulies and having trouble making it back. Found somebody's footprints and started following them. After an hour, he realized he was following his own tracks in a circle!

You are correct. In June of 2021, I actually bought the 0e073 card off of eBay. I think I got it for $40. It was legit. It was the latest "2021" update. Like you said, it is always a year behind so the actual date on the map data, as displayed after install, was April of 2020. The latest "2022" update is part number 0e074 but the map data is most likely from April of 2021.

Are these locked down or something? Could you not just pull the map file off the SD and it be shared or am I missing something?
