Are seats flat when you put them down?

When you put down the 2nd row in your 4runner, is it flat with the trunk? Would you be able to lay down or would you have to create a flat platform? Also, if it isn't flat, how many inches are the seats above the trunk?

No, they sit about 2.5" higher and about 12" is lost to the bottoms folding up against the driver/passenger seat. Do a quick search, some creative ideas for platforms out theter.

You will have a hump (maybe 3 inches?) when you put the back seat down with both the empty cargo space and the third row seat config .. With the sliding cargo deck config you get a pretty flat surface when you fold the back seats down.

It's only flat if you have the sliding tray. I made the mistake of not getting it and trying to sleep in the back.

Edit: Wasn't sure about the turd row but someone answered.

They're also flat if you have a 3rd row. OP didn't specify what model he has

Who cares? This never shows everything anyway.
They're super flat with 3rd row, and you don't have to flip up the 2nd row seat bottoms to get the 2nd row seat backs down so it's even better. I kind of wish I went with a 3rd row just because of this. I'd probably never use the 3rd row, but that big flat space with the extra room of no seat bottoms being flipped up is really good.

Theres 2.5" bump... a air mattress, if its a generic wal-mart one(10"+ thick, full) can compensate for this (but they still suck)..or a couple of 2x4's w/ a half sheet of plywood(carpet opt) solves the issue forever, and lets you use a nice air mattress that doesn't go flat...errr I mean strrrrretch in the middle of the night :/

Agree on the third row, very small incline but smooth transition. I keep my paddle board in car so it was third row or no runner. I dont like the design of the middle row Seats flipping uP (non third rows). Maybe theres a reason for it?

I just built one of these. Super easy and quite non obtrusive. So much so that I have just left it in the vehicle. Easy to remove but it's not really in the way at all so it will just stay there.

note - his measurements for the plywood are spot on but his write up didn't mention or who the 2x2 or 2x4's needed below the plywood to actually get it to the correct height.

Plywood is crazy expensive but not sure how you got to $250 for this? I was out the door at Home Depot for $262 but that included a new skill saw as my 25 year old Black & Decker had died the week before. Ended up giving the other half of the 4x8 sheet of plywood and the rest of the carpet I bought to a friend with a 4runner to he could build one too.

100 bucks in hardware for "tie downs" and carpet and padding all the way to the front seats. In the future, the 2nd row will be pulled and storage put in their place.

I like the option of taking out the back seats to get 6" more of room to stretch out and I'll probably do that when I next go on a trip. The back of the 2nd row of seats is already carpeted though so not sure why you would need more? I didn't feel the tie downs were needed at all.

Good luck with the project. It's only took me 2 beers to complete. Not nearly long enough!!

Like i said i go overboard. The stock carpet is crap and if I'm deleting the second row in the future, might as well get all the carpet at once. Still on the fence about the tie downs. I will at least keep 4 in the stock locations.
